Each year it is my privilege as President to provide a few updates to our alumni and friends. Here are a few things you may like to know:

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK

New programs

This year the Senate approved the creation of a new minor in Kinesiology, a new major in Theatre, and a new minor in Leadership, Politics, and Government which will include a semester of study in Ottawa and an internship on Parliament Hill or with a non-profit agency. The Senate also approved the launch this coming fall of the Claystone Experience, a gap year program for recent high school graduates to be offered in partnership with Shiktehawk Camp in Florenceville-Bristol, New Brunswick. An entirely off campus experience, students will serve at the camp, and will complete cross-cultural experiences in the Dominican Republic, in inner city Montreal, and in a first nations community, all the while also completing a year of university studies and engaging in many outdoor education experiences. A few seats remain for each of these programs for the fall. These programs, as well as significant additions to our scholarship and bursary program and increased investments in athletics are possible only due to the support of many donors who believe in the positive impact that Crandall University can have in the lives of students.

New books

I am pleased to announce that Crandall has been the recent recipient of three large collections of scholarly books. The first collection comes from Mr. David Hawkins, a Moncton-area entrepreneur who has amassed a large collection of books in the areas of business, entrepreneurship, and leadership. The second collection is the personal library of longtime Acadia Divinity College professor and administrator, Dr. Andrew MacRae. This collection focuses in the areas of biblical studies, apologetics, and the practice of ministry. The third is the personal library of Crandall graduate and former professor, Dr. Jim Beverley. This 5,000 volume collection in the areas of world religions, new religions, cults, and apologetics is widely recognized as the finest of its kind in Canada. Dr. Beverley’s collection will be preserved as one unit and will stand alongside the Rawlyk, Murray, and Morrison collections.

Dr. Bruce Fawcett and Mrs. Penny Fawcett President and Vice-Chancellor

Thank you

Let me thank you for your prayers and expressions of concern for my health over the past year. Just after Convocation last year I had a large non-cancerous tumor removed from my brain. The experience was challenging and, as with many forms of suffering, God has used the surgery and recovery to teach me a lot about myself and about Him. I wouldn’t wish the experience on anyone, and yet I wouldn’t want to have missed out on what I learned and how I grew. I have no lingering effects. I feel fine and am working at the same speed as I was before all of this was discovered. Again, thank you for your kind support. I am delighted at the many positive things God is doing in the lives of the students at Crandall University. The transformation of lives is possible only because of your partnership and investment in our students. It is my prayer that God will grant you a healthy and joyful summer season.

STANDING IN THE GAP By Dr. Robert Knowles // Vice-President for Advancement The years immediately following high school are critical in setting the trajectory of one’s life. So many important decisions are made regarding studies, career, relationships, and faith. Children raised in the church are encouraged (or prodded) to attend Sunday School, youth group and Sunday services. While for some a period of rebellion, many teens hang in there with family, and the influence of church members, mentors, youth leaders, and pastors helps set a foundation. However, when one sets off for University, things can change. University years are a time for independence, exploration of ideas, and making new friends. If one isn’t careful, these “freedoms” can lead one away from what was once important, namely a close walk with God.

Coming to Crandall is not a guarantee of life or spiritual success. Only God can change lives, but we seek to provide an atmosphere where growth can happen that honours God. Our Staff and Faculty, believers themselves who have faced challenges of studies, can provide guidance and support in a smaller university environment where students are known by their first name, not as a number like large university campuses. Chapel provides a daily opportunity for our community to worship, to study and to build relationships with one another. Our new ClayStone program, launching this fall in cooperation with Camp Shiktehawk, will provide a new, exciting, and engaging program of mission, academics, and discipleship that will strengthen the lives of new students.

Don’t get me wrong, there are many who get plugged in with Christian friends and serve God in a local church away from home. However, I observe in my travels, and from what I read that the wider church is in danger of seeing too many in this emerging generation fall away from faith and vacate our churches. Crandall University is aware of this great need and for decades has been “standing in the gap”, seeking to be what President Fawcett has termed “a Christian Parent’s Best Friend.” Crandall isn’t a perfect environment; I’m not aware that one exists, but we can play a critical role at a key time of life and be a safe place to land as students, many of whom are Christians, some who are not, deal with issues of life and faith.

You understand the value of a Crandall University education. You understand our mission. Your investment as an alumnus/ alumna, supporter of Crandall enables us to stay true to our mission of “transforming lives by providing quality university education firmly rooted in the Christian faith.” Thank you for helping us stand in the gap. Our students, our future depend on it. CRANDALL FACULTY & STAFF TRAVEL ABROAD We are proud that our faculty and staff take their work outside the Crandall walls to help others. Below are a few examples of those who travelled in 2016.

DR. STEPHEN DEMPSTER, India Professor of Religious Studies

Dr. Dempster travelled to India for the second time, speaking at Shalom Fellowship church and Youth With A Mission (YWAM) Discipleship Training School. Dr. Dempster participated in the anniversary services of Shalom Fellowship church (located in Hyderabad, in the South of India), engaging with and speaking to over 100 church members. Dr. Dempster enjoys incorporating his international experiences with his classes, sharing stories of God’s goodness and how God is making a difference in the lives of the people.

DIANE TAIT, India

Coordinator of Donor Relations

Diane Tait, and her husband Pastor Shawn Tait, travelled to India for two and half weeks in March as part of a three-person team sent by Far Corners Ministry. Together, they led multi-day retreats for women, youth leaders, and pastors and their spouses in various communities in West Bengal. They also visited local ministries and community development projects around the region and Pastor Shawn had the opportunity to preach in two churches. Overall, it was a whirlwind trip!

DR. SAM REIMER, Nicaragua Professor of Sociology

Dr. Sam Reimer, a professor of sociology, spent two weeks this past summer in Nicaragua as part of an Educator’s Tour sponsored by the Canadian Foodgrains Bank. As part of a team of educators from across Canada, he traveled to remote parts of Nicaragua by boat, plane, and truck to visit projects helping subsistence farmers improve their food security. Sam says the highlight of his trip was two days/ nights living with a coffee farmer in his mud house. “The experience is one I will not quickly forget. I know it will enrich my teaching on poverty and justice.” 7

MEET J ER E MY B.B.A. J e r e m y Vi n c e n t , G r a d u a t e d M a y 2 0 1 7 If I could describe my experience here at Crandall in three words, it would be: Welcoming. Challenging. Transforming. My name is Jeremy Vincent, and I am in the latest graduating class at Crandall! I cannot imagine many, if any, post-secondary institutions where the professors are so highly educated, yet still care so much for their students. I have learned as much from my professors outside of the classroom as I have inside the classroom. Knowing they genuinely cared about me as a person not only motivated me to be a better student, but it helped me grow as a Christian. I am so thrilled to be embarking on a year-long internship at Passion City Church in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, starting June 2017. Throughout this internship, I will have the opportunity to learn from some of the best leaders in the world, and I cannot wait to see how God uses this experience to shape my life. Beyond what Crandall taught me about Business Administration, my time at Crandall really taught me to trust God in all things (Proverbs 3:1-6). Where God leads is not always “logical," but it is always right and good. To be honest, the eighteen-year-old boy who pulled up to Crandall four years ago did not have a ton of faith, but now I am totally confident that God can accomplish absolutely anything, through absolutely anyone. If I had something to say to a potential student it would be that you will not regret going to Crandall! Academically, you will be challenged by your professors in ways that will prepare you for the “real world”. Spiritually, you will have opportunities to grow in ways that are eternally significant.

I have taken 40+ courses at Crandall where I’ve learned a lot, but the impact Crandall has had on my life can’t be measured in textbooks or lectures. In Colburne House, Mitton Court, Brinton Auditorium, and on Crowell Field, I’ve built relationships, I’ve learned tough lessons, I’ve made memories, and I’ve grown closer to my Creator. That is what makes Crandall so special!

Jeremy gave the 2017 afternoon Graduand Address, speaking about honour and seeking what God wants for your life. Jeremy also recieved the 2017 Faculty of Business Administration Gold Medal, as well as the Highest Overall Standing Within the Class of 2017!

ADULT PROFESSIONAL STUDY DIVISION Complete a Bachelor's degree and/or earn a Master's degree without quitting your job! The focus is Organizational Management and, most significantly, providing adult professionals a convenient classroom opportunity for completing a Bachelor’s or earning a Master’s degree while being fully employed. Our students come with a broad range of life, educational, and employment experiences that are essential ingredients for producing a rich and engaging classroom learning environment. Successful students are self-directed and goal-oriented individuals. The value of obtaining a degree in organizational management is the reality that all organizations (e.g. business, not-for-profit, and public service) require effective management.

Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management (B.A. Org.M) The B.A.Org.M. is a degree completion program serving adult professionals who already have some post-secondary education, and who now would like to complete an undergraduate degree. All classes are operated utilizing teaching-learning strategies that are conducive to learning for adults. The students are highly motivated individuals who enjoy the personal challenge and professional benefits of completing their undergraduate degrees. Not only does the format of attending class one night a week make it possible, our B.A.Org.M. graduates are often promoted within their organizations and some even before they receive their degree. The ideal applicant for the B.A. in Organizational Management program should: - have completed at least 1 year of college or university education - be employed full time and have at least 21 years of life experience

CONTACT US 14

Master of Organizational Management (M.Org.M.) The M.Org.M. is intended for passionate, dedicated, team-oriented working professionals looking to maximize their potential in managing people and leading organizations. Unlike an M.B.A., which focuses more on the technical aspects of business administration, the M.Org.M. is about developing big-picture strategies and understandings and especially the knowledge necessary to lead and motivate people. The M.Org.M. is a thirty (30) credit hour Master’s program. This 19 month program is delivered in a 5-semester format enabling those fully employed adult professionals the classroom opportunity to complete their graduate degree during evening hours. Classes are just one night weekly. The ideal applicant for the Master of Organizational Management program should: - hold an undergraduate degree from any discipline with a GPA of at least 3.0 - be employed full time and have at least 2 years of employment experience

Annie L. Breau, Graduated May 2017

Coming from a background heavily involved in competitive sports, the discipline of group leadership always intrigued me. Though I was not actively seeking a Master’s degree program, I wanted to elevate my teaching certification status and continue my education. When I read an Organizational Management brochure while attending a banquet at Crandall one evening, I knew I had found a program worth investing in. Reading theories and principles are important but personally I desire face to face, human interaction; some of the best lessons I have learned in life were gleaned from informal relationships with inspiring individuals. This program provides a strong foundation of theory and principle and is presented in a format that promotes relationship building, networking, and teamwork. As an elementary/middle school teacher and father of three children under 8-years old, Wednesday evenings provided refreshing and stimulating opportunities to broaden my understanding of leadership through thought provoking lectures, presentations, and interactions with peers. The experience of peers in my classes was very diverse and always challenged me to think differently about issues faced in the workplace. While I do not desire to leave the classroom just yet, this program has dramatically increased my effectiveness and understanding as a manager and leader. I regularly apply skills and concepts in my current program and when the opportunity to enter administration presents itself down the road I will do so with confidence. Well worth the investment.

Being from a small French village on the North-East shore of NB, the decision to move to Moncton to further my future life successes was one of my vastest undertakings I could have done as a young progressing adult. I attended college for two years which led to a variety of administrative roles with the City of Moncton for the past 13 years. Six years ago, after in depth research due to finding myself at a standstill career-wise, I decided that if I wanted to open the doors of the world even greater, I had to further my education and bring it to the next level. Three universities later, and one too many breaks in between it all, Crandall University allowed me to achieve those goals working full time by attending weekly evening classes within a two-year time frame. Such constructive and creative opportunity was filled with interesting courses, teachers, and students, a one-year Applied Research Project, and an undergrad recognition to ensue. What a journey it has been! I will be the first one in my immediate family to obtain an undergraduate degree, and I must say‌ am I ever grateful to have had Crandall by my side. I have made new friends, met amazing people/teachers along the way, and I have challenged myself in ways I never thought I could. I can honestly say today, Crandall has become to me what we like to call family. Judgement was never existent and doors were always open no matter what challenges were thrown at me along the way. Together we had faith. I never stopped believing and now the end result is finally here – Success! Thank you Crandall!

MEET ART E D U C AT I O N Ar t Moore, Graduated with B.A. & B.Ed. May 2006 Current M.Ed. student My name is Art Moore. I’m a poet, a playwright, a rugby coach, and a high school teacher. This semester, I am teaching students who did not attend school last year. I grew up in Ontario, but I’ve been trying to claim Maritime status. Before teaching, I was an officer in the Canadian Forces army reserve, and before that I was a long-haired hippie. I’m a student of my students – so we teach each other as we teach toward freedom (I stole that phrase from Bill Ayers). It’s a mise en abyme. When all parties are learning; that’s the best sort of education. I’ve been teaching twelve years and I’m only now figuring out some of the most fundamental aspects of the job. My students are responsible for the co-creation of curriculum, for a shared voice in evaluation, and for becoming engaged activist citizens. And this is what makes me so optimistic for the future. The biggest reason I decided to pursue an M.Ed. is that I was granted Academic Leave by the Dream Granters of Anglophone East. I had considered a Creative Writing M.A., but was also interested in becoming a Wizard at Hogwarts. I am so thankful that Crandall was kind enough to allow me into their M.Ed. program. Time in the M.Ed. program has made me a much better teacher. The professors helped me develop skills; I now integrate technology in a way that I never thought I’d be able (I still don’t own a cell phone). I’m more intentional in my interventions and planning. I am much better at reflecting on what is happening during a lesson, and I know precisely when something hasn’t succeeded with a student and can plan to meet those needs with many more tools. A huge part of my development as an educator was the result of working with other students in the M.Ed. program. When you enter an M.Ed. class and count up the years of collective teaching experience, you realize that you are in room filled with experts. The best classes that I taught this semester came directly from things I learned from my classmates. I remember looking around a lecture and thinking, I hope my son has great teachers like these.

We started a small micro-economic project lending goats to peasant farmers and employ a number of Haitians part-time. For the past six years our field team was comprised of former students from Harrison Trimble, several Haitian employees, one of my soldier buddies, and one American missionary – Rich Mears. As you can imagine, work in the field in the third world is often complex and offers moments of high stress. The students whom I selected for this type of work were highly motivated, kind, brilliant, and resilient. Four of these high school students were recognized for their work and awarded the Moncton YMCA Peace Medal. Many have since distinguished themselves in the medical field and in computer programming. One is a pilot. It is quite something to be trusted with the lives of your students, and also to trust them with yours. Isn’t that something, to have had the great honour of teaching such wonderful young scholars – who see the world as something that is there for them to make better?

I started working in Haiti after the catastrophic earthquake in 2010. I’ve led a team back to Haiti six times.

Distinguished Alumni Award REV. JACK ALLEN

break me,” he explained. Those times of fruitfulness included: being trained in prison ministry, being a Chaplain with the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team, serving on the Baptist Convention’s Board of Ministerial Standards and Education, being trained as a therapeutic humor caring clown, being trained as an Intentional Interim Pastor, serving on eight mission assignments, and helping start Touchstone Counseling with Jeff Stubbert. Now semi-retired, Jack spends his days with Ardith and their three children – David, Jonathan, and Jacqueline – and their eight grandchildren – Winter, Scarlett, Calum, Megan, Anna, Luke, Gabrielle, Cassia, and their soon-to-be grandson to be born on June 18, Jack Arthur Carlin!

I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me— the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace. (Acts 20:24, NIV) Rev. John A. Allen, known by most as Jack, grew up in Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia on a hobby farm. After his oldest brother, David, was killed in a farm accident, Jack began a search for life’s meaning and purpose. In 1953, a Youth for Christ team came to his community. God used this to profoundly impact Jack. He explained, “It was like a blind was down and as the preacher preached, I could see the light – the light of the Gospel.” This newfound faith journey led him to the United Baptist Bible Training School (UBBTS) and, at the same time, to Ardith. In 1966, Jack and Ardith married and moved to Prince Edward Island to pastor a field of churches. “I never believed God would call me to ministry, but one night, the Lord deeply spoke to me and said ‘I want to you to serve me in pastoral ministry,'” Jack recounted. Jack pastored churches in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and in the state of Maine. This summer, he will celebrate 40 years of being ordained to the Christian ministry. He credits his ministry impact to intentionally walking in a humble spirit. “Before God can really use you, you have to be broken and humbled before the Lord. My greatest times of fruitfulness were when God had to

Join us in celebrating Jack on his outstanding accomplishments, devoted service, and loyalty to Crandall University. Jack is the epitome of what this award is all about – congratulations!

Leadership Award STEVE BELL

But it was hearing Bruce Cockburn in concert that compelled him to focus on the fingerstyle guitar-picking that has become his own trademark. After playing with several area groups—from the “Eagles”-like pop band “Elias, Schritt, and Bell” to the children’s entertainer “Rocki Rolletti”—in his late 20s Steve felt called by God to leave the bar scene and devote himself to explicitly Christian music. Wife Nanci returned to teaching to give their family a regular income while Steve composed and recorded his first album “Comfort My People” on the label he founded with friend and producer Dave Zeglinski. After a few years working with the Christian organization Youth for Christ, Steve committed himself to full-time music-making in 1992, and it is now 25 years later.

Steve Bell is one of the most imaginative, clear-headed and theologically informed singers and songwriters you will ever hear. If you haven't come across him yet, set aside four minutes to listen to one of his songs, and there will be no turning back." --Prof. Jeremy Begbie, Duke Divinity School In a musical career spanning decades, Steve Bell has emerged as Canada’s foremost Christian singer-songwriter. With deep roots in the Canadian prairie, Steve has brought the gift of thoughtful and beautiful song to audiences throughout North America and across Europe, Africa, and Asia. He also has nurtured and promoted a new generation of musical artists via his recording studio and label, Signpost Music, and pioneered web-based music sales for Christian musicians in Canada. On any list of Christian musical leaders in Canada in this generation, no one would rank higher than Steve Bell. Born in Calgary in 1960, Steve grew up the son of a Baptist pastor, Alf Bell, and his musical wife, Marie. Steve’s distinctive combination of sacred story and song thus comes naturally, and his family cultivated it by forming a gospel band as well as exposing Steve to the grittier music played by inmates in the Drumheller prison where his father served as chaplain. When he was an adolescent, Steve’s family moved to Manitoba, and Winnipeg has been his home now for more than forty years. He studied piano and trumpet, and later added saxophone to his toolbox.

Over these last three decades, Steve Bell has released 20 albums, four songbooks, and three concert DVDs. His music has sold more than 400,000 units worldwide, and he has given more than 1500 concerts. His innovative “symphony sessions” have linked him with many of Canada’s major orchestras, including a concert with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at the legendary Massey Hall. In 2013, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra presented him with its Golden Baton Award for his “significant contributions to music and to the WSO". Steve has won numerous Western Canadian Music Awards, Covenant Music Awards, and Vibe Awards. Most notably, he was the first recipient of the Juno Award for Gospel Music and is the only twotime winner of that award. In 2012 he received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for his artistic excellence and service to the musical community. It is in recognition of this extraordinary career of sustained artistic excellence, spiritual vitality, and open-handed generosity to others that Crandall University awarded Steve Bell its Leadership Award, the sixth day of May 2017.

2016-2017 SEASON This season was another great one for Charger Athletics. We fielded teams in 3 varsity sports, built on the club teams we have, added new club teams and hired a new AD. Here are some highlights. BASKETBALL: Women’s basketball saw great growth this season. A great group of women came together to play and missed playoffs by only one win. Stability and personal growth would be terms to describe the Men's Basketball team. The team enjoyed the highs of player rehabilitation, the emergence of key role players, and the validation of having the most talented players in the league. Thomarcus Nix experienced personal bests in most of his significant categories while Brandon Fields emerged as a defensive player of the year. SOCCER: The Women’s Soccer season started with a 2-10 defeat at home to Holland College. Throughout the year, the team gained momentum and pushed game scores to a 1 goal difference. On October 2, the women had their first win in over 5 years with a 4-1 game against STU. The men's soccer team was looking to build off a 5th place finish in 2016. While remaining competitive in every ACAA game, they once again found themselves finishing in the 5th spot, just missing a spot in the 2017 playoffs. CROSS COUNTRY: This season was full of personal bests and successful competitive standings. The team represented Crandall well and had continuous improvement of their personal best times. Victoria Dempster, MVP female, had a personal best time of 21:36 for 5km, and always placed in the top 2 at every race. Jordan Graves, MVP male, had a personal best time of 32.57 for 10km and his best placing was 3rd place. BASEBALL: It was a challenging season with the team playing 16 games and only winning 2. The men played with huge heart, and with a lot of life lessons learned. They look forward to the 2017-18 season. BOXING: Forty students participated in the inaugural season of the Crandall Boxing Club. Students enjoyed the fitness benefits of boxing and six committed to sparring and competition. The club is part of the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association and will host its first event right here at Crandall University. Please continue to support your CHARGERS! All of our games are now webcast live, and archived on ACAATV.ca. We thank you for your support and involvement in Crandall University Athletics. crandallchargers.ca | crandallu.ca 30
