Inspired by the recent sale of a painting by Gustave Courbet (illustrated in this catalogue) to the Musée Malraux in Le Havre, I decided to organise an exhibition of paintings of the sea, a reprise of a show my father realised at the gallery in 1962. After the devastating impact of last year’s Boxing Day tsunami, in which friends of the gallery suffered terribly, I thought the exhibition might be inappropriate. However, after consulting with the families affected and receiving their approval for the show to go ahead, I am pleased to present Marine. Accordingly, the gallery has promised to make two charitable contributions. Firstly, to the King Alfred’s School Tsunami Appeal – a direct project to re-establish a school in the village of Kiniya in Sri Lanka where 500 people were killed and half the children were orphaned and secondly to the Waterford Kamkhlaba School in Swaziland – specifically chosen by a family bereaved by the tsunami, in memory of Jane Holland (nee. Attenborough) and her daughter Lucy. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those friends who have so generously lent their paintings to this show and all my colleagues at the gallery for their assistance; Rachel, Bunny, Robin, Sally and of course my father. I am also very grateful to Ms. Annette Haudiquet, Director of the Musée Malraux for allowing us to include the Courbet and also Claude Monet’s Fécamp, Bord de Mer, which we sold to the Museum in Le Havre a few years ago. Finally, for full details on all of the works in the exhibition, for biographies on any of the artists, or for further information on the two charities, please do not hesitate to telephone or e-mail me at the gallery (atk@cranekalman.com).
