THE BBCH NANDI EPIC

A

nd truly an epic finale it was! The tenth and the last race on the calendar of the Bangalore Bicycle Championship (BBCh) has become a roadie’s annual pilgrimage. A whopping 183 participants from every corner of the country, a smooth 100 km tarmac, an 8 km final dash to the 1500 meters above sea level hill top, sweat, grime, bacon, lungs, competition and achievement is what the EPIC saw this year and took another step to strengthen its position as the premier amateur road race of the country. We think a double ton peloton is a possibility next year considering the steep climb that the participation graph has shown each year. Close to 80 % of the starting grid finished the race this year, which was flagged off on a cold and foggy November Saturday morning. The route, which is a combination of highway straights and hairpin loops to the top of the hill is a healthy test of skill and stamina for the amateur riders. The competition is tough as most riders prepare for this race through the season. The race starts on the outskirts of Bangalore and the route is curated over 100 km for the elite and masters category and 60 km for amateurs and ladies. The spirit of competition is serious and you get that taste of the real thing!

Though billed as a local race the Nandi EPIC has now acquired national reputation and is on the “must ride” list of most amateurs. This year saw independent riders and teams from Delhi, Mumbai, Rajasthan, Chennai, Kerala, Hyderabad, Goa, Assam, Pune, Chandigarh besides the local riders. What strikes you especially if you are a visitor is the immense power of the community and the camaraderie that the race showcases. It is like a carnival. If you are a visiting rider just connect with the community or any of the bike shops involved with the race either in person or through social media and a helping hand is not far for last minute tweaks, transportation to the venue or with any other assistance that you may require. The race management is entirely volunteer driven and it is creditable the way the riding community and the leading bikes shops come together to make it a success. CRANK congratulates team BBCh for completing yet another successful season. Log on to www.bbch.in for information on next years calendar. It should be up soon. Place Bib

Divya - RAAM Crew

DIVYA TATE: THE ULTRA CYCLING CZARINA

C

RANK caught up once again with Divya Tate after a gap of a few years. One of the most recognized names in the long distance / endurance cycling scene of the country, Divya is also India’s first Super Randonneuse. There is a lot that has happened on the Indian cycling scene since we met last. From participating and organizing brevets, Divya has moved on to mentoring riders, identifying talent and developing her own successful ultra cycling properties. Deccan Cliffhanger being one of them. Lets find out more Deccan Cliffhanger. It has carved out a niche for itself. How did you begin? Divya: The Idea of setting up races like The Deccan Cliffhanger came from my involvement with Race Across America (RAAM). I have been going for RAAM either as crew or as an official since 2012. I could see a growing interest in India for RAAM and other such ultra events. It was to facilitate this ultracycling evolution that I started an event management company called “Inspire India” and conceived the idea of the Deccan Cliffhanger How does Deccan Cliffhanger compare with other RAMM qualifiers?

10

CRANK with ProCycle JANUARY 15TH, 2016

Divya: From my experience RAAM Qualifiers in India differ from those abroad in one significant area. The variety of challenges. Here one tends to look only at elevation as a prime parameter of difficulty, but one has to remember that weather, climate diversity, wind and other factors can add a lot to the challenge of a qualifier. At Deccan Cliffhanger we look at a variety of challenges that makes it intense and grueling. Considering only 40% of the solo participants finished in time to qualify for RAAM you can imagine the difficulty rating Any other ultra cycling events in the pipeline? Divya: The 400 Mile Deccan Cliffhanger from Pune to Goa is only the first step in the progression towards tough races like Race Across America. “Inspire India” plans to put up longer Ultra races over the next few years. The next one is The Ultra Spice Race, which will have a number of different distances starting and finishing in Goa. By 2018 we are looking at organizing internationally affiliated races in the Himalayas Tell us about your personal crewing experience Divya: There have been many! I have crewed 7 times so far at 4 International Races and each one is unique and each time I learn something new. I would most certainly recommend riders to

Race briefing

get crew experience themselves before attempting a big ultra race. It helps. I am happy that since the first Deccan Cliffhanger the number of crewing volunteers has increased. What is the philosophy behind Deccan Cliffhanger? Divya: The Deccan Cliffhanger is about being inspired and inspiring others. I am proud that this ‘little’ race has given so many people an opportunity to transform. The oldest participant in the team category is Santanam Swamy 68 yrs young from Pune, and the youngest is Shubham Das, 16 years old from Nagpur and suffering from a crippling leg issue. We have Dr Koparkar who had a liver transplant less than a year ago, has been cycling for his health, trained and raced at The Deccan Cliffhanger. Truly inspirational, and that’s the philosophy behind Deccan Cliffhanger All the best Divya and keep that ultra cycling flag flying high!

For those who want to know Ultra Cycling is a grueling discipline with riders competing against themselves by completing long distances in regulation time. A long distance road race with multiple stages is not considered ultra. The clock needs to tick continuously. Each rider is allowed a support crew. RAAM is one of the most popular ultra events but there are others like the Race Across Europe and many other.

Deccan Cliffhanger 2016 The Deccan Cliffhanger is a 643 km (400 Miles) race from Pune to Goa. There are solo and team categories and the solo category is RAAM qualifier. So those who want to take a shot at the worlds toughest ultra cycling challenge should test their legs and lungs here. This year 32 solo racers and 21 teams started heading south to climb up Mahabaleshwar, and then continue to Dharwad over rolling terrain, before descending the Anmod Ghat to Goa. The route and the climate proved to be tough. Only 12 of the total 31 people who stood at the solo start line finished in RAAM Qualification timings. This is a RAAM Qualifier Race…. we didn’t say it was going to be easy! This year Ila Patil of Pune, created history by becoming the first Indian woman to qualify for RAAM in India. She finished the challenge in 32 hours and 14 minutes.

TOUR OF NILGIRIS By Sanjana Shashidhar

T

he 9th Edition of the Tour of Nilgiris (TFN) is beginning on the 16th of December 2016! It is an 8 day cycling tour encompassing over 850 kilometers, spanned across the 3 southern states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala in India. With a 110 riders (including 9 women) the Tour has certainly grown since its inception in 2008. An annual event, TFN is open to all cyclists - with participants ranging from moderate racers to extremely experienced riders. The Tour provides an excellent opportunity for like-minded cycle enthusiasts to interact and connect, all in the midst of enthralling natural surroundings. Once again the Tour takes its cyclists through 3 wildlife sanctuaries - Nagarhole in Karnataka, Waynad in Kerala and Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu. The varying terrain provides riders with the perfect opportunity to test their endurance, both physically and mentally. Indian Terrain proudly sponsors such an experience, where India is perceived in her natural glory. The trail will be thoroughly manned with support staff (and markers as well) to ensure that all participants have a peaceful and satisfying ride. This edition also has a diverse array of participants - who range from individuals who are students

and IT Professionals, to Business Heads and even mountaineers! Without it’s support staff, the Tour would remain incomplete. To ensure that the daily rides occur smoothly, the volunteers have attended workshops relating to basic cycle maintenance conducted by Jayant Probikes and first aid conducted by Sita Bhateja Speciality Hospital - the Tour’s Medical Partner. Not to forget, all individuals involved in the Tour will receive stellar accommodation across the envisaged route. TFN’S Hospitality Partners - Vivanta by Taj, Yashwantpur and Vivanta by Taj Surya, Coimbatore - will graciously host the Flag Off and the Cool Down party respectively. The Tour of Nilgiris is an initiative by the RideACycle Foundation, which is a non-profit organisation aimed at promoting the practise of cycling. TFN in its entirety is thankful to all its sponsors for their continuous support in making the largest cycling tour in India a huge success. Trek, Firefox and Jayant Probikes are the Associate sponsors of TFN 2016, while the official home is Karle Town Centre and the official Radio Partner is Radio City 91.1FM. (The above stated are only few of the sponsors and not all of them.)

OXFAM TRAILWALKER

W

hen was the last time you felt that rush of achieving a spectacular feat? Chances are you don’t even remember, and which is why endurance challenge Oxfam Trailwalker is a perfect way to bring back

that rush. Not-for-profit Oxfam’s flagship event, this global phenomenon held across 16 countries requires both mental toughness and good physical conditioning. As part of the challenge, participants complete a 100km walk through mountain terrain. The trail winds through tarmac, mud paths and forest treks at varied elevation, and this change in terrain gives the walker a chance to discover their best performance. Oxfam Trailwalker is currently held at two venues - the UNESCO world heritage site of Sahayadris near Mumbai and the other at the picturesque Nandi Hills close to Bengaluru. A combination of a time cap of 48 hours and the mandatory rule of walking in teams of 4, this event promises to be an unforgettable experience of achievement. And all of this is for a good cause of helping the most vulnerable and marginalized communities in India. Since the last 5 years, participants have included top-tier executives from multinational corporations and the popularity of the event is only growing. The next edition of Oxfam Trailwalker will be held in Bengaluru from 20 - 22 January 2017.

RUGGEDIAN

T

his event has all the makings of becoming one of the premier events on the adventure-racing calendar of the country. “The Rugged Sahyadri” is a self-supported adventure race and combines two disciplines; Mountain biking and trekking. Participants can take on the challenge either solo or in a team of 2. The Race is held on outskirts of Kolhapur. The unique feature of the race is that the route is kept a secret till the end and is revealed only at the bib collection time. So the participants have to be necessarily quick witted and comfortable with the unknown. A key skill is navigation The race is curated entirely in an off road terrain where participants are required to peddle and trek through gut wrenching uphills, exciting downhills, village backroads, thick vegetation, jeep tracks, single track and muddy trails. You will hike and experience some real mountain biking. This is not an organized cycling tour, it’s a self-supported race and you are left alone with the elements. So brace yourself. You enjoy the rain and have the experience of a lifetime. The race though tough is inclusive and one can participate in any of the several categories like senior, junior, corporate, family etc. The Rugged Sahyadri has put Kolhapur on the adventure cycling map. The event is eagerly awaited and attracts larger crowds each year from every corner of India Hon Ex-Home Minister of Maharashtra Mr.Bunty Patil and Hon MP Sambhaji Raje Bhosale flagged off this year’s event on 27th November. Over 200 participants cycled hard, broke records, won over tough terrains and weather conditions to finally cross the finish line! Kudos to all our participants who competed and finished and to the sponsors Star Group, Tomato FM, Abs gym, DYP city Mall and Siddharth Collection for supporting cycling.

CYCLING WITH A LEG PROSTHESIS

Authored article by Dr. Ravi Chandra Kelkar, Consultant- Orthopaedics, Columbia Asia Hospital, Hebbal

F

amous para Olympian Aditya Mehta, today is an inspiration to many. After losing one leg in a road accident, Aditya never lost hope. Today, the renowned cyclist has won many medals internationally and has even attempted mountain biking to motivate similarly abled people like him Cycling is considered as one of the best physical activity for the differently abled and offers good cardiovascular workout while placing minimal stress on the residual limbs. There are special adaptations available to make cycling a safe and pleasurable experience for leg amputees Varun (name changed) used to love cycling and used it as his workout every morning. However, when he met with a bike accident 2 months, back, he had lost all hope of continuing his cycling. His bones were fractured and crushed when he came to the hospital and were beyond salvage. The first step that is normally taken in cases like this is to salvage the vascularity, reattach the blood vessels, ligaments and bones. But since Varun’s condition was pretty serious we had to unfortunately amputate the leg. As a part of the post operative counseling we advised Varun to get back on the saddle with the help of a prosthetic

Getting used to the prosthesis It is important that you get used to prosthesis. After you are comfortable with the temporary prosthesis, the main prosthesis is set up. Talk to your prosthetist for any customization that you would require. In the beginning, it is important to take it slow. Cycle for short distances for 5 minutes for a few days. Once you start getting used to it, you can gradually increase. For people who are into competitive cycling, it is important to take this as any other competitive sport, it is important to properly train yourselves before going for a cyclothon, or long rides. Also, always carry a spare prosthesis on the long ride.

Setting up your bike The most common problem that cyclists face is the prosthetic foot slipping off of the pedal. Clip-on or cage type pedals can be a good solution in these cases. For safety, when starting out, it’s best to use a flat pedal without clip-ons on the sound side for single leg amputees as you adjust to clipping in with your prosthesis. Make sure that you adjust the setting to the easiest position, where it gives the least amount of strain to your legs.

Setting up your prosthesis For any person who has gone through amputation, it is important to let the legs heal for at least 2-3 weeks. They are then put on trial prosthesis on the limb with supports. This helps the patient get used to the prosthesis. After the patient feels more comfortable, the final prosthesis is fixed. There are different attachments available for people who like to cycle and get the prosthesis customized according to their needs

18

CRANK with ProCycle JANUARY 15TH, 2016

Start with setting up your prosthesis on a stationery bike or a trainer to make sure you get used to the process. One of the most common problems cyclists face, is that the heel of the prosthetic foot hits on the crank arm. In this case, consult you prosthetist to help you with adjustments or any customization required. For above the knee sockets, it sometimes works to have your prosthetist cut down the height of an older socket to improve comfort on

the seat. Certain prosthetic knees allow a free-swing setting which makes pedaling more efficient. It’s important to know how to change this setting when getting on and off of the bike.

First ride After you’ve set up your bike and prosthesis, you need to learn how to get on and get off the bike. Having someone around you for the first time is a good idea. That person can also help get the prosthetic foot secured to the pedal if you’re having any difficulty. Getting off requires setting your sound side (or stronger side for bilateral’s) down first. Unclipping the foot requires a twisting motion for clipon pedals. It is sometimes easier to unclip your prosthesis if you lean your bike over a bit after putting your sound side foot on the ground. Riding a bike with or without prosthesis may take some work up front to get everything work properly. Once set up properly, it can lead to miles and miles of fun. However it is extremely important to understand the whole process and get used to the prosthesis before taking up any activity.

The Zaskar Carbon is super lightweight as you would expect, so it’s a demon on the climbs. Standing up in the saddle on the climbs feels great, like the bike could climb walls. On the descents, the Zaskar tracks the trail like a heat-seeking missile thanks to the Pike up front. Not only that, since the bike is so lightweight and stiff, it’s snappy in the turns and easy to loft and flow over chunky sections in the trail.

GT is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Zaskar this year, and for 2016 they introduced several carbon models of the venerable hardtail. One of the winningest XC bikes in history, with iconic Triple Triangle Technology. It is lighter, stiffer, and faster than ever, utilizing high-tech tube shaping to increase ride comfort while improving overall performance. once again, we have created the next generation of Zaskar The Zaskar is the only mountain bike to have notched World Cup wins in XC, DH, Slalom, and Trials. By today’s standards the Zaskar is a solidly XC bike (it is, after all, a hardtail) but in the early 1990s, bikes like the Zaskar were fairly common across all mountain bike disciplines. Needless to say, it’s unlikely we’ll ever see another mountain bike with such a diverse group of wins. And unlike the model name repurposing we’re seeing from brands lately, the Zaskar has been continuously available while staying true to its roots as a racing hardtail.

Lt Col Gaurav Dutta

Hyderabad, Telangana | Ride: Giant SCR 1

From Pune to Thonnur to Goa he has completed many triathlons. He is heartened to see so many events happening and the opportunity they offer the particpants. “I am 48 years old and intend to do a Olympic Triathlon next year and hope to be physically ready for Half Iron Triathlon in 2018, when I turn 50” All CRANK can say to you Colonel Saab is, ”Salaam and all the best”…and keep inspiring !

Divij Shah

Bangalore, Karnataka | Ride: Merida Hybrid

Guts, grit and glory are in any case a make up of a soldier and is no different for Lt Col Dutta. While on the call of duty at the LOC in J&K Lt Col Dutta lost his left leg in an anti personnel land mine blast in 2001. A sports enthusiast from childhood and a junior national rowing champion, Col Dutta made this incident which could have been life altering for many into a temporary setback. The army helped him to get back to sports and the artificial limb center designed the required prothetics for him. He even represented India in International wheelchair and amputee World Games and won a bronze medal in Golf! Lt Col Dutta has taken to serious cycling only recently as he got interested in triathlons. He is prolific on the triathlon circuit having complted 7 sprint distance and 2 super sprints. His ride is a Giant SCR 1. He loves the camarderie amongst the partcipants at all these events and has made friends and offered advise to many. Being a soldier of the most discilpined army of the world mental and physical conditioning come naturally to him and stand him in good stead.

Divij, now based in Bangalore epitomises what sportsmen are made of. Having lost an arm to an elevator mishap in childhood Divij did not let that come in the way of his sporting pursuit. A Cricketer who has represented the West Bengal under 16 team Divij is a born again cyclist. Although he started only recently he is loving it and regularly commutes to work and takes part in amateur competetions. “I love the thrill and It helps me focus, keeps me mentally fresh and is a great way to stay in shape too”, says Divij. A fitness bum to the core Divij trains with a focus on the core, back and leg muscles more than the upper body. He cycles and does his crossfit circuit workouts daily, keeps a check on his diet and generally leads a healthy lifestyle

Divij has completed some interesting and gruelling rides like the Manali to Leh, Bangalore to Malpe to Kudremukh and many other which include some long distance brevets. He has modified his bike to suit his condition. The gear mechanism on the right side has been moved to the left. He uses only the rear brakes while riding and not the front ones. He is now intending to get on to a road bike and is on his way to figuring out modifications that will suit him

Binay Kumar Sahu

Bangalore, Karnataka | Ride: Giant

A confident youngster with great dreams and who has everything that takes to realize them is what we think of Divij. “I intend to represent the country in all para-cycling events, and am on the look-out for opportunities that would enable me to do the same” All the best Divij…Ride n Roll !!!

Shekhar Goud

Hyderabad, Telangana | Ride: Trek Kabhi Jindagi Se Nahi Harna” (Never get disheartened by your life situations) are the lines of Shekhar Goud who is reattempting a 4000 km Leh to Kanyakumari cycling expedition after failing to complete the first time Shekhar has had a kind of a back from the dead experience when after a gruesome fall over high voltage electricity lines he was left for dead by a rather irresponsible medial staff. Shekhar literally walked out of a mortuary but the negligence and late treatment cost him two of his limbs. An arm and a leg had to be amputated. A modest background made matters worse financially but the The Artificial Limb Bank Foundation of India came to his rescue and soon Shekhar was picking at strings in his life that were frayed. The foundations Mohana Gandhi encouraged him to be a blade runner and he has already completed 14 full marathons in addition to brevets and ultra cycling Shekhar is a picture of grit and determination. He wants to represent India in the Tokyo Para Olympics We salute him and wish him all the luck!

41-year-old Binay Kumar Sahu is a familiar face in the cycling community. His cycle is his second home and is loaded with sleeping tents, utilities and bicycle spares. Binay lost a limb in an unfortunate accident but has not let that keep him away from cycling. He is prolific rider, almost an ambassador and clocks several kilometers daily. He has undertaken several long cycling tours like Bangalore to Leh Ladakh and promotes various social causes such as Swatch Bharat and other environment related causes about which he is passionate with almost a nationalistic fervor. Binay wears his passion on his sleeve and that brings out a feeling of charity even amongst complete strangers to towards him and his causes. In a recent such incident in Pune a complete stranger bought him a brand new bike and refused to even tell Binay his name! “The best part about cycling is that cycling it helps build mental and physical abilities and in turn helps to lead a beautiful life. I feel everyone should ride a cycle at least for 5 km a day”, says Binay We ditto that Binay. Keep that passion going.

Bharath Godwa Kallare

Puttur, Karnataka | Ride: SCOTT Sportster 40 Meet Bharath from Puttur in Karnataka. A passionate cyclist from childhood, Bharath lost his right arm in a collission with a bus while he was riding a cycle and when he was only 12. After overcoming the initial shock of losing a limb, Bharath settled back to now a different life through sheer determination and hard work. “Everything yet nothing changed for me after that accident”, says Bharath. He

bounced back and excelled at all extra curricullar activites at school just like before and later got involved in his families business and life moved along. But somehwhere inside he felt that vacuum which was because he was unable to relive his childhood passion of riding a bike. There was also the memory of the accident and trauma that kept him away from the bike besides the supposed impracticality of it all. That was until last year when he decided to give wind to his passion and bought himself a spanking new hybrid a SCOTT Sportster 40. As it is the lightweight frame and a super responsive disc brake makes the ride smooth but Bharath has made some practical modifcations and customisation to suit his condition. Being a right hander, after the accident Bharath had to depend on his left arm for dexterity which he achieved successfully with some effort. In line with this Bharath has modified his bike in a way that the basic controlling features are on the left side handle. He changed the handle for additional stability and designed both the front and back break levers in such a manner that they are placed together on the left of the handlebar. He has switched to tyres with wider diameter to increase stability. Small innovative tweaks and Bharath is back on the saddle with his original passion ! “I was born to be on a bike” , says Bharath and you can experience that exhileration when he says that. And Bharath is not just your weekend rider, he is a daily commuter inspiring others to do the same…. Cheers Bharath and as we say…keep riding and smilin.

Fog can reduce visibility

Rollers used by Pro Riders

WINTER TRAINER aniSh

A

s the mercury drops and the chill in the air increases, it becomes difficult to put up with a morning bike ride routine. The comfort of a warm bed and pillow takes over the willpower to exercise and get out and ride. Additional factors like low visibility due to fog and dam roads caused by mist also raise a safety issue for morning bike rides in the winter. Here are a few tips that will help you stay in the groove all year long. If you insist on riding out in the morning, check for tire options for both wet and dry surfaces, MTB riders won’t have to worry about this, but road bike riders will have to pay heed. It could turn out to be wise to swap out to wider tires on road bikes. When on slippery roads, endure that braking is applied in increments and that you do not jam the brakes at the first sight of trouble. Also use this as an opportunity to better your bike handling skills. Add visibility to yourself and your ride. Head and tail lights, reflective vests and strips are available in plenty of options across a varied price range. Invest in these accessories and ride with confidence. If you are used to riding alone, consider joining a riding group and stay in a well formed bunch during your rides. For riders who prefer not to step out at all

in the winters, stationary trainers can come as a boon. Trainers allow you to mount your bicycle onto a resistance platform and churn out your training routine from the comfort of the indoors. Now it is worthy to mention that trainers will come in handy mostly to road bikers. But with a little bit of research, you might be able to find wheel and tire options for trainer mounting of MTB as well. When investing in a trainer, ask yourselves a few questions about how much time and training are you going to spend on it. The price range of trainers vary widely and can be narrowed down based on your exact usage. Trainers have basic mechanical systems using fans and weights or magnets to using fluid and thermodynamics to full size rollers to provide resistance at the rear wheel. Choosing the one that fits your needs will be made easy by consulting your local bike shop.

what the pros use, a roller. Rollers are tricky to start using and require some bit of practice to avoid injury. Another tip is that all trainers are noisy. Keep this in mind when choosing a spot at your home to set this up. Also, it will be wise to get a spare rear wheel meant only for trainer usage as tire wear is faster on trainers and it is not safe to use tires worn on trainers out on the real roads. There are specific tires made for this purpose, install these in a spare wheel and you are good to roll. Share your winter rides or trainer ride images with us at editdeskcrank@procycle.in

You will have to invest in a bicycle computer if you don’t already have one and will also need to hook it up to your rear wheel unlike the traditional front wheel installation in case you already own one. Adding power meters can be a great new tool to riders who are focused towards specific training goals and preparing for races. In a brief hierarchy, wind trainers that use a fan are basic in design, next up would be trainers that provide resistance using magnets, followed by fluid trainers and finally

In this issue we feature the unique sport of slack lining

T

at 4-5 feet above ground whereas highlining can go real high even between two mountains or buildings. You can graduate from slacklining to highlining as you gain expertise and control.

Slacklining and highlining involves walking or balancing over a flat webbing anchored at two ends. Slacklining is done at low levels

Seems relatively simple but the sport is both tricky and fun. Its different from tight rope walking which has been round for some time now . Its more versatile one can do several variations. Performing a good slacklining maneuver is like yoga. Besides a strong core, there is much focus required and it has an indirect impact even on your mental stability.

his time we bring to a very unique and a relatively unknown new sport that is catching up in some parts of the world. Slacklining became an international sport, highly popular in Europe and US, but is still unknown to most Indians. Every year competitions happen in many countries and there is even a world cup. Earlier this year India’s first slacklining championship happened in Chennai.

Rohit Vartak is perhaps India’s first highliner. He is a pioneer and has encouraged many to take up this fun sport. He has done highlining amongst high mountains peaks of the Sahyadris like the dukes note. Walking at those altitudes on 1 inch tape can be scary and is not for the mean hearted. Of course there are safety precautions and harness to arrest a fall if there was one. If you wish to try you can get in touch with Rohit at vartak.rooclimb@gmail.com. Believe us it seems simple but it is tricky and great fun especially on your office outings.
