The Ghost in the Night

By Louis Loest

It was a quiet evening: the wind blew softly, and the air was fresh, these kinds of days were not common in London. I went over and I blew out my candles and went to sleep. The next morning the sun shone bright and I made a lovely breakfast of scrambled eggs, life could not get better. I went outside for my morning walk, but it was strangely quiet I did not hear any birds tweeting or the grocery sellers shouting for superiority. I looked at my watch and realized that it was only 9:00 so the sellers would still be building up their stalls. I walked down the streets and into the woodland I saw a lot of fox's and some Christmas trees. As I walked deeper into the woods and saw a white flash run past in the distance, I probably imagining things, and nothing was there. I returned home and took a nap as I was startled. I woke up and had my lunch before visiting my parents to make sure that they were ok and well. I headed over to their house, but they were not there. I checked their room if they were sleeping but they were not there, but in their room, I found a rose which was blood red and a bloody hand mark engraved on the white wall. I knew something wasn’t right and I dashed out of their house panting in fear. I went to my friend's house, but I found the exact same thing in his house. Maby this was a killer’s sign of assassination or someone was trying to scare people. But I was not sure.

It was 5:00 and getting darker by the second so I ran home and lit all the lanterns as I did not trust the darkness anymore. I sat in front of a fire with my chin in my hand thinking about what had just happened. But little did I know that something was lurking in my house. As I went up to my room and did not blow out the two lanterns but kept them lit so that I felt safer and so Dracula could not get me if that was in my house. I woke up and saw a blood red rose beside my bed and a bloody hand on my wall. I quickly looked at my hand. There was blood and a deep cut. Someone was in MY HOUSE! I ordered a carriage to pick me up from my house and drive me far away from London as I did not trust the city anymore. I got into my carriage and the driver asked, ‘where to?’ ‘surrey please’ I replied, ‘that is quite a while away so I'm afraid that will cost you £30.’ he said ‘fine by me’ I answered. We set off through long winding roads and beautiful meadows that stretched over for miles! I'd never seen such beauty before as I had grown up in London for my whole life.

As I arrived at my cottage, I checked my watched and saw it was 4:00PM so I had a bit of time before dark if the person who was haunting me was still there. Luckily, I had a key to lock my bedroom door so that reassured me that was the safest place to be. I was eating my Dinner when I heard floorboard creaks coming from upstairs, I got up and went upstairs, I was not going to be afraid anymore. As I looked, I saw nothing but when I looked outside. I was horrified. I saw a girl with a white gown and long black hair covering her eyes standing in my garden with a bloody dagger in her right hand. I ran into my bedroom and immediately locked all doors and windows in my room. I heard a deep sigh and saw the white gowned girl outside my room looking through my keyhole with an anonymous glow coming from her eyes. I COULD NOT ESCAPE HER...

She started to bang on my door and shout ‘YOU CAN’T ESCAPE!’ Carriages appeared in the distance with bright lights, as they passed, I opened the window and screamed for help. They did not listen and kept on going on their journey. ‘I TOLD YOU’ she shouted. ‘what do you want from me?’ I asked ‘I WANT TO SEE YOUR DEAD BODY’ she said then crackled with laughter. ‘YOU CAN'T HIDE FOREVER!’ she shouted. She suddenly reached out her long old fingers and they pierced the door and went straight through. She kicked down the door.’ NOW IVE GOT YOU!’ she screamed. I ran the opposite way and ran at the window hoping that the hedge would save my fall. I smashed through the window and went back first into the hedge before getting up and running away. She screamed ‘NOOOOO!’ and I discovered that she had a fear of heights. She ran down the stairs and out of the door chasing me with a mouth drooling blood. A vaulted over the fence separating my house from the countryside meadows and quickly climbed one of the trees so she could not follow me. ‘AGHHH’ she screamed as if she was in agonizing pain. ‘GET BACK HERE’ she shouted before hurling her dagger at me. The dagger just missed my neck and went deep into the wood of the oak tree I was climbing. My heart was jumping out of my shirt as she could still pierce my heart with her long sharp nails.

Finally, she started to ascend the tree I was in and when she was about to kill me, I jumped off the tree down to the ground where I was free from her as she feared heights. I crawl away from her. ‘NOO, YOU IMBOSOL. YOUVE RUINED MEE!’ she screamed. ‘why are you so keen on KILLING ME’ I shouted back. ‘THEY KILLED ME’ she screeched. ‘WHAT?’ I shouted. ‘THEY MURDERED ME IN MY SLEEP SO IM GOING TO MURDER EVERYONE ESLE!’ she screamed. ‘You're a psychopath!’ I shouted, ‘YOU WOULDN’T UNDERSTAND’ she said, ‘Why did you kill my parents?’ ‘THEY WERE GETTING IN MY WAY!’ she said. A tear ran down my cheek and she jumped down off the tree screaming. When she hit the ground, I ran the opposite direction thinking she was going to chase me, but when I looked behind, she was not there only a stone figure was left there. It was her but she was frozen in time. Her hair fluttering behind her back revealing empty holes in her face where her eyes should be. I immediately sent a letter to the police to pick me up. They arrived 4 hours later, and I showed there her stone body and told them what happened. I showed them the dagger in the tree that she tried to kill me with and her fear of heights leading to her demise. They lifted the body into a separate carriage to the body to a museum. I was home. It was 8 a clock in the morning and I was back in London, knowing that there was no threat anymore helped me sleep but her voice gave me nightmares for months on end. But I had defeated that ghost and that’s all that mattered to me.
