Summer Term

10th June 2022

Message from Mrs Conrad Welcome back to the final half term of the academic year, so packed with events I know it will fly by! I hope you all had a wonderful half term break and enjoyed celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It was lovely to see so many of you at the FOST Jubilee Picnic on the last day of term. There was a fantastic turn out with everyone enjoying the old fashioned British games, country dancing and competitions; not to mention the delicious ice creams, Pimms and picnics (perhaps including a few marmalade sandwiches!). Huge thanks to FOST for organising this event and for bringing the school community together in such a fun-filled way!

Message from our Head Girl about a charitable project Dear Parents I spoke to the Prep School this week about a project that I am organising. I recently came across the Children’s Book Project charity www.childrensbookproject.co.uk. This is a national charity that believes every child should have access to good quality, exciting and relevant books, and I agree! Every child should feel part of a wider reading community, able to draw inspiration and pleasure from words and pictures. The charity looks to address book poverty and to change the statistics around book ownership – for example, across the UK, 1 in 4 disadvantaged children owns fewer than 10 books, whilst 1 in 8 children has none at all. This has an impact on these children’s academic outcomes but also on their wellbeing and emotional development. The Children’s Book Project looks to address this problem by gifting donated books to targeted communities. Children in those communities are invited to choose a book to take home and keep. The charity is hoping to gift more than 70,000 books this year. To help this charity, I am organising a Book Drive. What I have asked the girls to do is to look at home for any books that they have grown out of or don’t want anymore, then ask their parents if its okay for them to take them into school to give away. We can accept any children’s books, particularly looking at age range between 4 and 11, but they must be in good condition – they should not be torn, badly worn or yellowed. The Book Drive will be running from Monday 13th June for 2 weeks. I will put a box Reception for parents or girls to put donated books into. I have asked for volunteers from Year 6 to help me sort the books once the Drive has finished – if anyone in Year 6 would like to help but hasn’t yet told me, it isn’t too late; I’d appreciate as much help as possible! I really hope that we can make this a successful project, and collect lots of books for children less fortunate than us. Beth B (Head Girl 21/22)

Eco Tip As we near the end of the school year, if your daughter has outgrown her shoes and they are still in good condition, did you know that www.salsshoes.com will find them a new home? This is particularly environmentally friendly as shoes are relatively difficult to recycle because of all the different components they are made up of.

Eco and Gardening Club In Eco and Gardening Club this week, the girls were lucky to create hanging baskets with Alan our school Gardener. He showed us how to place the plants in the baskets so that they create an amazing display with trailing geraniums, fuchsias and lobelias over the summer. Try and spot them around the school?

Sayers Croft Year 4 had a wonderful time at Sayers Croft, embracing all of the different challenges and activities with enthusiasm. There were shrieks of excitement when pond dipping revealed fish, newts and a water scorpion (not as frightening as it sounds!). Many conquered their fears on the boulders and the girls had to work together and hone team working skills to solve puzzles and when on the challenge course. All of the girls were enthusiastic, supportive of one another and a credit to the school.

Poetry & Literature Club The girls in Poetry and Literature Club chose an author they would like to research and produced an interesting and eye-catching profile.

Public Speaking Competition Zara and Laiya did a brilliant job at representing St. Teresa's on Tuesday evening at the Woking and District Catenians Public Speaking Competition. Speaking about footballers wages and being the younger sister, both girls spoke confidently and with wonderful expression in front of an audience of pupils, parents and teachers. Well done ladies - we are very proud of you.

Year 4—Misty Mountain Sierra On return to school, the girls have climbed into their final topic for Year 4, Misty Mountain Sierra. We have spent time in Geography this week plotting the continents and their associated mountain ranges. Most fun, however, has been creating miniature scales of mountain ranges. The girls calculated, to a cm scale, specific global mountains, and created a Miniature Global Mountain Range. They look fantastic!

Year 2—Wriggle and Crawl The girls in Year 2 enjoyed learning the 3+3 rule for insects (3 body parts and 3 pairs of legs) before setting off on a minibeast hunt as part of their new topic, 'Wriggle and Crawl'.

Sport News Cricket On Tuesday, the U11A&B cricket teams played in a match against Notre Dame and both teams won. Miss Roberts and Miss White were very impressed with all the girls, they showed great bowling skills and worked well in their batting pairs. The players of the matches were Jasmin and Nyang’ara. On Wednesday, the U10A&B cricket teams played in a match against Manor House and both teams won! The A team played excellently, with many of the girls hitting 4’s. The B team played well as a team and showcased some good fielding skills.

Interhouse Swimming Galas Interhouse swimming galas will take place next week. Parents are welcome—if you can, please come and support the girls. Refreshments will be served during the event. Wednesday 15th June Friday 17th June

Swimming On Thursday, the U8-U11 swim teams swam against Boxgrove School. The girls all swam brilliantly, but unfortunately we lost by 3 points!! The swimmers of the gala were Harlow G, Isabella K, Saskia H and Sophia C. Well done to everyone who swam.

This Week This week, we celebrated the great feast of Pentecost, remembering that day when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Church. We reflected on how the Lord transformed the lives of his followers, first by removing their fear and giving them his peace, then by filling them with authentic joy and finally sending them out on a mission to share the good news of God’s love with the world. We reflected on what that transformation might have looked like. The images on this page were taken by a photographer who wanted to illustrate the point. The images on the left were taken first and then the second images were taken. I wonder if you can guess what the photographer said to the young people? You might imagine that he said, “Smile” but this is not the case. In fact he said, “You are beautiful! (see Ephesians 2:10). When we recognise how truly loved we are, when we recognise our innate beauty, we too will be filled with that Pentecost joy!
