Spring Term
8th February 2021 11th February 2022
Message from Mrs Conrad This week, we celebrated the Queen’s accession to the throne 70 years ago. We looked back at some key moments of her reign including her broadcast to children on the BBC’s Children’s Hour and her coronation ceremony in Westminster Abbey. We are currently working with FOST on some exciting plans to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee so watch this space!
Speaking of FOST, as I write this bulletin, preparations are underway for their Valentines Dance which the girls are very excited about! The Mairlot Hall is decorated with balloons and hearts, the photo booths are ready to capture some memorable shots and the DJ is set to get all the girls, Dads and dance partners up on the dance floor! I’m sure everyone will have a wonderful time and I extend my thanks to all the FOST volunteers who have organised this event.
May I take this opportunity to wish you a restful half term.
Sports Development Plan We are delighted to announce that our Sports Development Plan will be launched in September. This will be overseen by Mr Paul Hodgson who has been appointed as Executive Director of Sport for The Effingham Trust. Mr Hodgson has two daughters who attend St Teresa’s School. He has been Director of Sport at Cranmore for three years, a role which he will combine with his new appointment. Prior to holding this position, he had a successful 17-year professional rugby career. He tallied over 170 Premiership appearances which included playing for Bristol Shoguns, London Irish and Worcester Warriors. Mr Hodgson also played for England U18s, England U21s, England 7s and was capped for the full England International side 9 times. Post playing, he held the position of Academy Head Coach at London Irish, before stepping up as the 1st team Attack and Backs coach. Alongside his rugby career, he completed a BA with First class honours and a Masters with Distinction through Northumbria University. More recently, he completed his RFU Level 4 qualification and a PGCE with QTS (distinction). We look forward to Mr Hodgson joining the St Teresa’s team.

Eco Tip of the Week You may have little bags of silica gel that you don’t know what to do with. They are often added to new items, such as the lateral flow tests, to help absorb excess moisture and keep items dry. We usually toss these bags away because we think they are useless. But it turns out there are many clever uses for silica gel around the house. For example, you can use them to keep your car windows fog free and remove excess moisture from your camera lens. And if you ever drop your cell phone in water, you can try putting the phone in a container filled with silica gel packs and leave it overnight. We have had a request from a local society that are looking for some so if you have any please drop them in at the School Reception.
This Week In The Prep School Cranmore et Ste Thérèse Petit déjeuner a la française What a wonderful way to start the day with the Year 5 from St T and Cranmore having a traditional French breakfast, the opportunity to converse in French with a little help from the Year 10 students to keep the conversation flowing.
This week has been Children’s Mental Health Week (7th-13th February 2022) and the theme has been Growing Together. In PSHE sessions this week, we have been encouraging the girls (and adults) to consider how they have grown and how they can help others to grow. There is a useful 'helpful tips' sheet for parents, produced by Place2Be, which contains information about how to promote good mental health and positive wellbeing for children. This information sheet can be found here.
This week, as part of Children's Mental Health Week, the girls in Year 2 created a 'helping hand' of five people in their lives who support them and help them grow.
After talking about different emotions and how they can change, the girls set goals for their emotional health.
On the 8th February, we marked Safer Internet Day. This year, the theme was 'All Fun and Games? Exploring respect and relationships online.' The day aims to promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people. If you would like to explore the apps available to children or develop a conversation regarding online safety with your children, there is a very useful guide for parents from the Safer Internet Centre which can be accessed here.
This Week In The Prep School Year 4—Science As part of our Electricity topic, Year 4 have been lucky enough to become the creators of light! Through learning all about circuits, the girls have been able to alter motors, light bulbs and begin to understand what a circuit really is. They have created their very own switches to be able to deliberately connect and disconnect a complete circuit on command. We made a variety of switches, sliding switches, button switches and some even using tin foil!
Year 4—’1066’ As part of their 1066 topic, Year 4 have been learning about the Battle of Hastings. After re-enacting the key events, they examined the Bayeux Tapestry, sketching their own sections using a view finder to focus their attention.
Choca Choca Van! Last weekend, Jena in Year 3 decided to sell hot chocolates and croissants to her neighbours. She created and posted flyers and turned a great profit (donating half to charity). She put her money counting skills to the test, handing out the correct change to her hungry customers! Well done Jena, what a great idea.
Year 5—Tudor Food As part of their Tudor topic, Year 5 were asked to research some authentic recipes from the time and have a go at making them. Some were delicious, lots were full of sugar, and a few will not be made again!
Year 3—Greek Masks During our Ancient Greek topic, we learnt about Greek theatre in both Drama and our topic lessons. We had to earn Greek Drachma during our lessons to then spend in our Greek shop, buying all the things we would need to create our masks. We designed our masks using what we had learnt about Greek Gods and Goddesses for inspiration. We made them using mod rock, paint, glitter, sequins, pipe cleaners and feathers. they are all ready for a magnificent theatre performance!
Year 2—Class Assembly It was a special day for the girls in Year 2 today as they performed their class Assembly. The audience enjoyed learning about Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth II and Windsor Castle - all showcased through song, drama, video clips and the girls' own work.

Pupil News Well done to Phoebe H (Year 6) who played for Surbiton hockey in the London Plate. They played 3 games in their group winning them all without conceding a goal. They topped their group and won both their quarter and semi finals without conceding a goal again in normal time. Both games were decided on penalties with one going to sudden death which Phoebe did incredibly well in under a lot of pressure. In the final, again the outcome was decided on penalties and they were just defeated by one goal.

This Week It isn’t every day that the Queen writes to you, but that is precisely what happened this week. On Sunday the Queen celebrated 70 years since her accession to the throne, the day on which she became Queen. In Chapel this week we marked this extraordinary event in the history of our countries, the commonwealth and the world. The Queen’s letter to us is filled with gratitude, particularly for the support that she has received during her reign, especially from her beloved husband, Prince Philip. And much was made of the announcement that the Duchess of Cornwall is to be knows as Queen Consort when, in due course, Prince Charles becomes King. But surely the most wonderful, and humbling, element of this letter is the way the Queen ends her message, with the words, ‘Your Servant.’ It is good to remember that as a young princess, the Queen was not expected to accede to the throne. Only when her uncle abdicated and her own father became King George VI did it become clear that she too would one day be called to this role. Even as a child she recognised her role as servant, perhaps best shown through the compassionate broadcast that she and her sister, Princess Margaret, gave on the radio programme ‘Children’s Hour’ during the Second World War. Thus began a lifetime of service that even the most hardened Republican has to recognise has been one of constant, faithful service. As we gently prepare to celebrate this great Platinum Jubilee, we give thanks for a monarch who faithfully, generously, and humbly serves, and we pray that we, in our turn, would recognise that we too are called to put the needs of others before our own, recognising that we are all called to serve.

We hope that you all have had a lovely 1st half of the Spring Term! You may have noticed that we have a couple of new ponies who are staying down in our bottom stables. Red and Bobby arrived on Saturday 5th and are taking the time to settle in to our routine. They should be out of isolation by the time we are all back to school term so you will be able to say hello to them then! We hope that Red and Bobby will become new riding school additions but before they can be used in lessons they need to gain some fitness (in the case of Bobby!) and are being ridding by our amazing staff in the meantime. If we don’t see you over the half term on our Pony Days then we look forward to seeing you all after the half term! Take care!!
February Half Term Pony Days The February dates are already fully booked! If you would like to be added to the waitlist in case of a cancellation, then please email the office or there is an update on the system where you will be emailed automatically if a space becomes available.
The team are in the process of organising for the Easter holidays and will announce when those dates are published and ready to be booked on.
NSEA Competition Reports There are more NSEA competitions coming up as the competitions pick up for this year. We have some teams and individuals heading out for both NSEA and BSJA Just for Schools in the half term. We wish you all luck!
