Spring Term

8th February 2021 14th January 2022

Message from Mrs Conrad I hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas break that brought both rest and joy! This week in school, we have been bringing our Christmas festivities to an end by celebrating the Feast of the Epiphany. Many people around the world mark this occasion with a lovely custom known as “Chalking the Door” which the girls learnt about in my weekly assembly. This custom involves Christians writing on their doors with chalk the date of the new year as well as the initials of the 3 Kings (Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar). Years ago, it was noted that these 3 initials (CMB) are also the initials of the Latin blessing “Christus mansionem benedicat” (May Christ bless this house) and so in writing the chalk blessing on the door, people are asking God to bless their home and family throughout the coming year. In this new year of 2022, may God bless each one of us – in our comings and goings, our conversations, our work and play, our joys and sorrows. Happy new year to you all!

Year 5 Riddles In English, Year 5 have been investigating riddles this week. The girls helped to compose a class riddle before going on to create their own. Can you guess what they have written about?

5MK I shine up high but come too close and you shall die I am far away but close Without my sibling I would rule the sky I bring life but also pain and death I can't bring happiness if the mist is blocking me If you look at me, you shall not see You can have fun, but be warned, I can be dangerous Too hot for mankind My cheeky children never leave my side My present to you is life I am deadly if you get too close, but from afar I am a beautiful star. What am I?

5HC I am a boastful big beast, I have a big red pimple on my face, I have a popular sibling who is smaller than me,

I am red and she is green, Far away from prying eyes through the glass you can still witness my terrible temper rage, I have 79 children, 26 of which are waiting for their names, I move dancing and prancing around my boss, who rules the sky. Who am I?

Year 4 - ‘Invasion’ Year 4 have dived straight into their Invasion topic with enthusiasm. Working in groups, they have ordered the many dramatic events of the Viking Invasion on a timeline, discussing the impact on Anglo-Saxon Britain.

Year 5—Space To complete their topic on ‘Space’ the Year 5 girls planned, designed and created lunar models, space rockets and moon buggies.

This Week This week, we celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany, remembering the visit of the Magi who travelled a great distance to visit Jesus, the new-born King of the Jews. We remembered that it is this visit that established the tradition of exchanging gifts over the season of Christmas. Indeed, in many cultures, gifts are given, not on Christmas Day itself, but on the Feast of the Epiphany. During our time in Chapel we reflected on the three unusual gifts that the Magi presented to Jesus. Gold is a rare precious metal, often used for jewellery because of its beautiful colour. It is particularly associated with royalty. The Magi gave this gift because they wanted to show that Jesus is KING. Frankincense is a rare perfume that forms when the sap of the Frankincense tree dries. Again, it is a particularly precious material. When it is burnt it releases a beautiful sweet perfume as well as releasing smoke that creates a great dramatic scene. Frankincense was burnt in the Temple in Jerusalem, day and night, as a sign that God was present. The Magi gave this gift because they wanted to show that Jesus is GOD. Myrrh is a strange gift for a baby. Again, this precious perfume is made from the sap of the Myrrh tree and can be turned into a bitter, but still beautiful, perfume. In the ancient world it was often used to anoint bodies before they were buried. The Magi gave this gift because they wanted to show that Jesus is the SAVIOUR. Finally, we blessed our school and our classrooms with the traditional ‘Chalking the Doors’ as we prayed ‘Christus Mansionem Benedicat—Christ bless our homes’ and our school!

Please do make sure that all riders pack appropriate coats and waterproofs. The temperature has dropped again and it is really bitter up here in the evenings!

Pony Update We are making the heart-breaking decision to retire Tango from the riding school and are therefore looking for a loan home for him. We are searching for an adult only home who can keep him in light work having fun in a schooling and hacking home. If you or you know of someone who would like to take on our amazing ginger pony, or would like more information, then please email us at equestrian@stteresas.com
