8th February 2021 14th May 2021

Message from Mrs Conrad Despite the lashing wind and rain last Saturday (!), Mrs Irons and I were delighted to welcome 14 families to St Teresa's Prep School for external tours of the school. Many of these prospective parents had received recommendations about the school from current parents so a big 'thank you' to those of you who have given such positive testimonials. The overriding feedback from the local community seems to be that St Teresa's is welcoming, inclusive and offers an excellent all round academic education hand in hand with superb pastoral care. This is exactly what we stand for and will continue to deliver - thank you for trusting us with your daughters' education and wellbeing. It is a true privilege to work with them and watch them blossom and grow.

Good News! Olive the cat has been overseeing Miss Hilder marking Year 6's stories!

Cooking at Home Alice in Year 5 has really enjoyed the sessions with Gary. She liked making the salad so much that she decided to make it for her family at the weekend! The rest of Year 5 made bread at school and took it home to bake—just like Chef Gary! Here are some of their amazing and delicious creations!

Great Work! Maths Investigations To celebrate the NSPCC’s Number Day, Mrs Irons’ Maths group had great fun investigating number patterns. We chose four numbers and put them on each vertex of a square. After marking the mid point, we found the difference between the two numbers and recorded it. We then made a new square with the midpoints and repeated our calculations. It didn't matter what numbers we chose, our squares always ended up in zero! We tested odd and even numbers and multiples too!

Year 3—Fossilisation Year 3 undertook an experiment to show the process of fossilisation. They buried sweets to represent dinosaur remains between layers of different types bread. This represented the sedimentary rock. The girls enjoyed squashing all of it down and ensuring that lots of weight was put upon it to resemble the forces that are made by many layers over millions of years. A week later, the bread layers were carefully peeled back to revel the imprint.

Year 2—Research The girls in Year 2 have been using the iPads to research information about Australia in preparation for creating booklets.

Year 6—Hola Mexico As part of their topic 'Hola Mexico!', Year 6 have been drawing accurate maps of Mexico to show both human and physical features. They used atlases and online maps to locate the main cities, places of interest, mountainous regions, rivers, volcanoes and the surrounding seas.

Year 3 – RE The girls identified important events in Mary’s life and worked out which religious pictures and quotes go with each event. They worked together beautifully as a team and there were some fantastic discussions!

Gardening Club The girls thoroughly enjoyed starting to design their miniature gardens. After careful consideration, they drew their diagrams and labelled their pictures. As well as grass seed, they are hoping to include gravel, soil, slate, twigs, sticks and anything else they find.

Year 1—Measuring The Year 1 girls have started to look at measuring this week, and have started with weight. They learnt some new vocabulary and thought about the significance that size might have on an object's weight.

Year 4—Quiz Competition Recently, Peyton, Alex, Tabitha and Felicity took part in the Greenfield English Quiz competing against a number of local schools over Zoom. Each round was different, testing knowledge of idioms, solving anagrams, book covers and even Cockney rhyming slang (in which they scored an impressive 10 out of 10!). The final round involved a creative writing task which needed to be written as a group. All of the girls contributed well and we were very proud of their independence and maturity. Well done Year 4!

Art Club In Art Club, the girls have been experimenting with water colours to capture the delicate daisies which are growing in abundance around the school grounds.

Music News Musicians of the Week Sophia D for her consistently good responses and participation in lessons. Paris C, Isola R, Evie B, Susie Y and Tabby D for their excellent Harry Potter rap.

Music Exams Girls who recorded music exams last week and those who have still to record their exams before half term, will receive their results after half term.

Year 4 Music Club—Cancelled Please note that there will be no music club for Year 4 on Monday 17th May. The club will resume on Monday 24th May.

Instrumental Lessons Parents are reminded that girls taking instrumental lessons need to bring their music to school on the day of their lesson each week.

Sports News Star Class of the Week PE star class of the week goes to 5HC. Well done girls!!

Year 3 Cricket Year 3 had their first cricket fixture last Friday against Downsend School. The girls played superbly, showing off their newly learnt overarm bowling technique. Their efforts paid off and both teams won! The final scores were: 309-284 for the A team and 265-253 for the B team. Players of the matches were: Alice for her superb batting and Isabella for her bowling and for getting a wicket.

Surrey League Smash It Tournament Year 6 had their Surrey league Smash It tournament on Tuesday against Downsend School and Danes Hill. The girls thoroughly enjoyed themselves and improved over the two games. We showed off our fielding and bowling skills, getting three wickets over the two matches. Tabby bowled a wicket, Arabella threw the ball at the wicket and Lottie caught a ball. Xanthe showed off her batting skills, hitting three 6s and two 4s, encouraging the girls to hit the ball hard. Players of the tournaments were: Xanthe for batting and Arabella for fielding.

This Week On Thursday we celebrated the Feast of the Ascension of Jesus. On this day we remember the occasion when Jesus, having spent 40 days since his resurrection, appearing and continuing to teach his followers, now returns to his heavenly Father. The account that we read in Chapel (Acts 1:1-11) is rich with Biblical imagery, explaining in human terms this supernatural event. For Jesus’ followers, they knew that we reached God by ascending to him. Practically, this often meant building temples and places of worship on mountains, hills and high places - the place where God was to be found. And to describe the presence of God, they used the image of clouds, like the clouds of incense that burn day and night in those places of worship as a sure sign of God’s presence. Those early followers of Jesus were in no doubt that Jesus has returned to his heavenly existence from which he had come. While on earth, living his fully human existence, Jesus allowed himself to be constrained by time and space. His ministry was necessarily limited, as we are told, to Samaria and Judaea. By returning to his heavenly place, his ministry, through the work of the Spirit, and the cooperation of his followers, could begin to spread the Good News of the message of God’s love throughout the whole world. Indeed, those timid, unworthy followers would soon be transformed into courageous witnesses to that Good News with the coming of the Spirit at Pentecost (but more of that next week). For now, we recognise his call to us, as to those first followers, to recognise his presence with us always, and his challenge for us to be witnesses to that presence.
