Issue 7
Summer Term
17th June 2022
Message from Mrs Conrad This week has been a wonderful celebration of sport. Bookended by two major swimming galas (IAPS and the ESSAs) demonstrating the incredible accomplishments of our girls at a national level, all our girls displayed an incredible level of swimming in the inter-house galas. Congratulations to all those who took part and huge thanks to the PE and swimming staff for all their hard work in preparing the girls and running such enjoyable events. It was great to see so many of you at the Sports Re-Launch meeting on Wednesday evening. Dr McShane and I are extremely excited about the developments in PE going forwards from September and extend our grateful thanks to Chris Harrison and Paul Hodgson for working with us, with you, and the PE departments across both schools, gathering feedback and putting together such a dynamic strategic plan for the future. Watch out world - the St Teresa’s girls are a force to be reckoned with! Today, your daughter will be bringing home a small gift from the school to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. We hope it will be a lovely memento for them to remember that this historic occasion took place whilst they were pupils at St Teresa’s.

Sport News Pupil news Alana did her second open water snorkelling dive as a member of the British Sub-Aqua Club this season. She trained in the pool throughout winter and achieved her first Snorkel Diver Award. This means during her assessment sessions she demonstrated all the skills needed to dive safely as part of a training group in sheltered British waters. Some of her open water dives this season include a freshwater lake dive at Wraysbury in May (cold and rainy but fun!) and another in the sea at Pagham beach (on a beautiful sunny day). She is now working towards becoming a more Advanced Snorkeller.

Celebration Assembly This week, Mrs Yalden played us a piece on the piano. It was composed by the Austrian composer called Schubert. The notes in the right hand went very quickly and Mrs Yalden explained to us the importance of practising our scales as composers use them all the time in their pieces!
Orchestra and St Teresa’s Singers •
There will be no orchestra after school on Monday 20th June.
•
There will be no more St Teresa’s Singers rehearsals this term.
South West Surrey Youth Orchestra I started playing the trumpet in South West Winds (SWW) when I was nine years old and I was recently invited to audition for a trumpet seat in the South West Surrey Youth Orchestra. After my audition, I was thrilled to hear that I got a place! Currently we are in rehearsals for our summer concert which will take place at Dorking Halls. For this, I am learning several pieces including Intermezzo by Bizet, Radetzky-March, Sir Duke and The Stars Wars Epic. I love playing in a large orchestra, meeting new friends outside of school and performing in great venues.—Poppy, Year 6
Chapel Concert Congratulations to all the girls who performed so beautifully in our last Chapel Concert of the year. We had singers, violinists, pianists and a choir. Girls in the Year 4 string quartet and the St Teresa’s Singers treated us to two of their favourite songs. There were also performances on some more unusual instruments, the oboe and the viola.
Individual Music Lessons There are spaces available for instrumental lessons in September. Please email Mrs Yalden if your daughter would like to take up a new instrument next year—c.yalden@st-teresas.com
This Week Last week we recalled the great outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost when the disciples first received their Mission to ‘go out’ and share the good news of God’s love with the world. There are those who argue that our faith is an internal, private and personal matter Sadly, this is a mistake. If we keep our faith locked up behind the closed doors of the Upper Rooms of our heart, we will confine and restrict God’s plans for our lives. Instead we are called to throw open the doors and go out to share in the adventures God has in mind for us. And we do this particularly well when we engage in acts of charity where we give of our gifts, talents and abilities for others. We have a great opportunity to do precisely that as part of our charitable project for Values Week next week where we will be supporting New Dawn African Girl, a charity, set up by Ms Hobkinson,, the Senior School Head of Geography, to transform the lives of girls in Kenya. The charity aims is to rescue girls from oppression and give them education and hope for the future. Many of the girls in the town of Isiolo, where the charity is based, face terrible challenges - FGM, forced marriage, being orphaned by HIV/Aids or famine and drought, the dangers of living on the street and grinding poverty. Despite this, the charity have already transformed the lives of many girls. They have also successfully purchased land, built premises and dug a bore hole. Now they need a pump, solar panels and a water storage tank. And that is where we can help. Next week the whole school community will be asked to make a donation of £1 per litre and to carry the water along Baker Street ( a mere fraction of what the girls in Isiolo are required to do every day). We then hope to raise the £1000 needed to purchase this new equipment. Full details will be sent out in a letter, including how you can donate via our JustGiving site. Thank you for giving generously and for supporting this wonderful charity!
