Anti-Bullying Week

As part of Anti-Bullying Week, the girls discussed bullying, kindness and reaching out to others in Assembly. They were also challenged to be 'Upstanders' not 'Bystanders' if they observe any unkindness. The girls were invited to wear odd socks or crazy tights to remind us that we all have differences, and this is what makes us special.

#oddsocks #antibullyingweek2022

With Anti Bullying week underway, the Year 4s were set a special homework following odd socks day. The girls were asked to represent a theme of anti bullying week, such as kindness, inclusion, listening, and many more. Creativity was the challenge! We had some lovely and thoughtful representations such as Harlow's Odd Sock tree, with key messages labelled on different branches 'Show respect', 'Always listen', and 'Think good thoughts'. Another fantastic creation was Avery's Lego depiction of bystanders in their comfort zones, boxed below upstanders showing and sharing kindness with those who need it. Anna went 3D with her fantastic scene, depicting an important message hidden in a sad scenario, from bullied to empowered! #ReachOut

Some really powerful representations!

Year 3—Art

Year 3 continued to strengthen their drawing techniques this week. They were challenged to zoom into one aspect of these beautiful illustrations of shells, using a viewfinder, and to draw it using the full range of tones which softer pencils allow. These mini drawings were a warm up before our lesson designing Neolithic patterns, and only took 5 minutes. Well done, Year 3!

Year 4—Science

Last week in Year 4, we started a very long, very smelly experiment! With our Digestion topic in full swing, and a current focus on teeth, we set out about finding the impact that different liquids would have on our teeth. We used hard boiled eggs to represent our teeth, and their shell posed as our enamel. We agreed on a variety of 16 different liquids ranging from hot beverages to fizzy drinks and got to work. We left the eggs in their liquids for a whole week, it got a bit stinky! We weren't too surprised that coke and coffee left their marks, but purple squash was a shocking surprise!

Year 6—Antarctic Expedition

Year 6 enjoyed a virtual visit from Ernest Shackleton this week to kick start their creative topic on his expedition to Antarctica. After inviting the girls to apply to his team, he answered our many questions about his motivation for the voyage, his biggest regrets and why women weren't eligible to apply. After this, the girls began creating their own scrapbook diaries, ready for their adventure! The girls are really looking forward to their visit to the Maritime Museum next week to find out more about all of the Polar explorers.

Eco and Gardening Club

During Eco and Gardening Week the girls came up with questions to ask Mrs Low, Director of Operations, about how eco friendly and sustainable aspects of the school are. We cannot wait to find out the answers next week.

Also, the girls planted hyacinth bulbs in readiness for Christmas. We discovered some of the bulbs are already sprouting! Super gardening girls.

Hockey—On Saturday, The U10 and U11 teams travelled to Downsend to play in a round robin hockey tournament. The U10 team only conceded 1 goal in 5 matches, showing some stellar defence however couldn't quite convert their dominance into goals at the other end, finishing the day with 5 draws. The team ended up joint 3rd, player of the tournament goes to Matilda R who created great attacks, but a big well done to everyone for working so hard.

The U11 team had a mixed bag of results, winning one, drawing 2 and losing 2 matches earning them 4th place over all. The girls work rate could not be criticised with every member of the team giving 100% effort in both attack and defence. Player of the tournament goes to Georgia C in goal, who consistently made some unbelievable saves to keep the team in every match. Well done girls!

This Week

We have all become very aware that at this very moment in Egypt the leaders of the worlds nations are gathered to discuss the climate emergency at COP27. While there are always reasons to be hopeful in the wake of such events, many of us share a deep concern for the plight of our planet. We are aware that we are using the world’s resources at an unsustainable rate and that our excess has resulted in pollution that is poisoning the environment. Dependence upon the luxuries of life, most particularly unsustainable sources of energy and single use plastic is destroying ecosystems both on land and in the sea. Many of the consequences are only now coming to light, including the long term impact on health, the damage to food supply and fertility. Unquestionably the greatest tragedy is that so many people across the world have been driven into grinding poverty as a result of greed, violence and injustice. While it is to be hoped that our leaders will make bold and decisive changes of direction as they meet, we can often be left asking ourselves ‘What difference can I make? What change can just one person make in the face of so many challenges?’ We were reminded that we can make a difference as we listened to a story this week in Chapel.

An elderly gentleman took his regular morning stroll down to the beach. The night before there had been a terrible storm and, as he approached, he noticed that a countless number of starfish had been deposited on the shore. There they lay, exposed to the elements and certain to die. The elderly man shrugged his shoulders. He knew there was nothing he could do.

Then, to his surprise, he was overtaken by a young girl. The elderly man smiled as he remembered how he had had the same energy when he was her age. But a frown gathered on his face as he watched what the girl did next. She had now reached the beach and he could see that she was picking up the starfish, one at a time, and throwing them back into the sea. He approached her, hoping that he could share some of his old wisdom with her. ‘You wont make a difference,’ he stated confidently. ‘There are just too many.’ The little girl paused for a moment and looked into his eyes. Then, reaching down, she took hold of another starfish and threw it back into the waves. And with a gentle smile on her face she called out, ‘I made a difference for that one!’

Every one of us can make a difference. Every small act that we make will make a difference with out world. Some people have forgotten this. Perhaps you can be the one who will remind them today!

As the weather is so variable at the moment, please make sure that you come with a jumper (no hoodies!) and/or a coat to wear when it’s chilly out. As we are on top of a hill, we get a bit of a cold wind when riding in the arena!

A reminder that if you wish to cancel a lesson, we do require 48hrs notice or more in order to offer credit. Any later and we are unable to fill the slot with a rider for a catch up lesson or off the waitlist. Finally, while the weather is showing on and off rain, we’d like to remind our riders that we still run lessons in the wind and rain provided there is not a risk to anyone safety. As an alternative for those who don’t want to ride, then we do offer stable management lessons in the warm barn.

A new horse arrived at STE on Sunday afternoon. His name is Barney and he is a 15.1hh, 10 year old skewbald cob. He is still settling in, but is very friendly and sweet!
