8th February 2021 21st May 2021
Message from Mrs Conrad Pope Francis set aside this week of May as “Laudato Si” Week - “Laudato Si” being the name of the wonderful letter he wrote addressed to everyone in the world asking us to look after the planet, our common home. As a faith school, we are very aware that we are stewards of the earth and have a responsibility to look after the precious gift of creation that God has entrusted to us. In assemblies and RE lessons this week, the girls have been thinking about practical ways they can stop climate change so you may well be asked for a bamboo toothbrush or a shampoo bar in your weekly shop! Today, I was incredibly impressed with the creativity and entrepreneurial skills of our Year 6 girls. As they pitched their ideas to a team of judges (“dragons”!) they demonstrated great business acumen, self-confidence and public speaking skills. St Teresa’s is certainly producing great leaders of the future that Alan Sugar would be proud to hire!

May Procession We will be holding our May Procession on Tuesday, 25th May. Can we please encourage you to send your daughter in to school with a bunch of flowers on Tuesday morning so that they can take part in this beautiful ceremony. As in previous years, following the procession, we will be donating all the flowers to the Princess Alice Hospice where, we trust, they will bring a moment of joy to the residents, their families and visitors.
Sports Kit After Half Term, the girls should only come in to school in their PE kit on the days of their curriculum PE lessons. The rest of the time they should wear school uniform. If they have sports clubs they should wear their school uniform and bring their PE kit to change into. When your daughter is wearing her PE kit, this should include tracksuit bottoms rather than the skort. The girls can change into their skorts if it is needed for their lesson.
Sports Fixtures We are delighted to announce that the updated government guidance means that we are now allowed to welcome spectators back to our sports fixtures. We hope you enjoy watching your daughters play and compete but would ask that you continue to refrain from gathering in groups larger than the legal limits.
Good News! This weekend Alana and Beatrix took part in a group online Science Experiment Experience organised by Children With Cancer UK. They had a great time making their own slime, playing with touchable bubbles, taking part in various games with other families (including a strawberry lace eating race!) and watched fun experiments demonstrated by ‘Professor Einstein’ online. Children with Cancer UK is an amazing charity funding research and services to support families of children with cancer during and after diagnosis. Alana did a great job helping her little sister to take part in all the experiments. Even the cat joined in! https://www.childrenwithcancer.org.uk

Great Work! Year 2—Measuring Capacity The girls in Year 2 have been working together to measure the capacity of different containers. They used their Maths skills to read the measuring scales very carefully.
Year 2—English What a fun way to learn about possessive apostrophes! The girls enjoyed labelling each other - A's hair, A's cardigan etc.
Year 1—Science Year 1 had a great time in Science this week. We had to help Howard because his umbrella had a big hole in it and needed patching up! We weren't sure which material would work best to cover the hole, so we decided to test out a few. TOP TIP: Do not use newspaper or tissue paper to fix an umbrella, you'll be one wet Wendy! The girls were surprised about how waterproof tracing paper and tin foil are. We had lots of fun!
Year 3—Tremors Topic Year 3 visited a range of volcanoes as part of their Tremors topic using our VR headsets. The girls also took a tour around the ancient city of Pompeii and 'stood' on the edge of the famous Mt Vesuvius after reading 'Escape From Pompeii' in class. We'll be writing our own escape narratives next week!
Year 4 Maths In Maths this week we have been practising converting between m and cm using 2 place (or even three place) decimals. We then applied our knowledge to measure standing jumps.
Year 4 Hubble, Bubble Toil and Trouble Hubble Bubble Toil and Trouble....... In Year 4 this term we have been concocting and creating our own potion bottle labels; including ingredients, instructions for use and warning symbols. After reading extracts from Macbeth we wrote our own rhyming couplet poems and performed them to the class, using our scariest cackles ha ha ha ha ha! In Science this week we worked in our Harry Potter houses to make different potions and watched what happened when we mixed certain ingredients together. The potion to make things grow was our favourite!
Year 6—Stride Perfect Pitch and Fair After weeks of planning, budgeting and creating, the girls were all set and raring to go this morning, ready for the their Perfect Pitch and Stride Fair today!
Year 6—Science Workshop The Year 6 classes took part in a SATRO science learning opportunity on Friday, which brought the reality of sustainable energy usage and educational goals together. During the day the girls carried out many hands-on activities and learnt how everyone can play a part in creating a sustainable future for all.
Year 1—Maths In Maths this week the Year 1s have re-visited Fractions. What a better way to start the day than with some educational pancakes!
Year 6 Poetry Club The Year 6 Poetry Club read a chapter from 'Nevermoor' by Jessica Townsend entitled 'The Hunt of Smoke and Shadow'. They used the descriptions in the chapter to inspire them to write a group acrostic poem using figurative language. Be afraid.......
Horrific death-seeking creatures Ogling the blinking shutters that conceal their prey
Undeniably threatening, they move like one living shadow Night-time swallows all the light from the world Deafening howls erupt from the midnight hunters Stealthily surrounding the manor; they leave no route for escape...
Music News Musicians of the Week Harlow G for working really hard with her chime bar playing. Abigail F for making a very good start in music lessons at St Teresa’s. Lilia N for contributing very well in class to the songs for Wind In The Willows
Music Exams Well done to Sofia C who performed very well for the video of her violin exam. The remaining exams will be filmed next week. Girls will be told in advance which day their recording will take place.

Please contact Mrs Yalden on c.yalden@st-teresas.com if you are interested in organising a session for your daughter. There are currently spaces for all instruments!
Sports News Star Class of the Week PE star class of the week goes to 6JG for their outstanding teamwork in PE.

The Surrey Tennis league has started and Year 4-6 have their first match next week against Wimbledon High and Rowan School. Good luck to all girls playing next week.

STASH St Teresa’s Activity Summer Holiday Camp (STASH) will be going ahead in the first week of the Summer holidays from the 5th-9th July. This will be open to all girls in the Prep School and involves sporting activities, as well as arts and crafts. Full details will be sent out before half term. Ava in Year 6 is enjoying ice skating so much that she is training before and after School. She recently performed a short routine involving jumps, twists and spins. It was over a minute long and she only had one week to prepare. Very impressive Ava! Ruby in Year 5 has been practising her skateboarding skills outside of School and regularly trains at her local skateboarding park. She even taught Miss Rippington how to do a 360 on a balance board. Keep up the good work Ruby!

This Week Geologists recognise that the earth has now entered the new epoch of the Anthropocene - a period where humans have had a greater impact on the earth that the natural processes. We are aware of the negative impact this has had, particularly as it has brought about the current Climate Crisis that we, as a country and a world, are only now slowly beginning to recognise and react to. It is now 5 years since Pope Francis’ letter to the world, Laudato Si’, and we marked this event by reflecting in Chapel on the fundamental question: ‘What kind of world do we want to live in?’, because it will be our choices today that will have an impact not only on us, but also on future generations - our children and grandchildren. There is so much that needs to be done, and it can feel overwhelming. We were shocked, for example, to hear that so much of our waste, including plastics that we had thought were destined for recycling, in fact are transported overseas, only to be put in landfill or burnt, adding to the CO2 burden o the planet (see here for more details) But the reality is that every positive choice that we make will make a difference. (Here are 100 suggestions for what you can do to help, and that’s just for plastic! Pope Francis reminds us that we are all called to be good stewards of the Creation that God has shared with us. And we all have a responsibility to our world and for its future - for ourselves, for the poorest of the worlds population and for all future generations. We are challenged to act - and to act now!
