Message from Mrs Conrad I can hardly believe that we have reached the summer half term and have only four weeks left in school before the end of the academic year! Your daughters, as always, have been a joy to work with and it has been wonderful having them back in school and watching them enjoy their studies, as well as more recently, educational workshops, trips and fixtures. As you are aware, we did have to send a bubble home this week, but we were so proud of the way the girls dealt with the situation in such a calm and mature manner. Thank you to you all for your ongoing understanding and support. We look forward to seeing everyone back in school after half term and very much hope to see you all in person at one of our end of year events. Have a restful half term break.

Great Work! Year 4 Art Here are some beautiful samples of Year 4’s ‘oil pastel and brusho ink’ experiments.

Year 5 Maths In order to further their understanding of the properties of 3D shape, Year 5 worked together to construct 3D representations from cocktail sticks and Blutac. Once constructed, the girls had to note down the number of faces, edges and vertices. According to the girls, the most challenging shape to build was the octagonal prism with 10 faces (2 octagonal and 8 rectangular), 24 straight edges and 16 vertices.

Year 3—Tremors Worshop For our topic of Tremors, Year 3 travelled back in time to Pompeii AD79 to find out what happened when the mighty Vesuvius erupted....we learnt about what happened to Pompeii and Herculaneum from our guide Octavia who was living there in AD79. We learnt about artefacts which were found in the public sewers… and even touched a piece of stone found 2000 years ago! We made models of fish to trade with and an offering to the God Vulcan out of wire. We looked at different types of homes, and the significant mosaics found there, to identify whether the people living there were rich or poor.

Year 1—RE Year 1 have been thinking about 'Jesus' New Rule' in RE recently and how we must live our lives showing love for one another. We discussed and brainstormed different ways that we can do this. We thought about how in Church, we offer each other the 'sign of peace' and show our care and love. We used this idea of sharing love by creating our own shaking hands poster showing the ways we can love one another. Peace be with you!

Eco and Gardening Club Eco Club and Gardening Club had a very generous donation from Mrs Bishop this week. She donated mini cucumbers plants and chilli plants that we will be growing in the classroom, courgettes and patty pans which we planted in the raised beds. The girls learnt what each of these looks like and how to create a tripod planter in the beds. Finally, we planted the chillies into larger pots and watered our sunflower plants. A huge thank you to Mrs Bishop!!

Year 2—Wriggle and Crawl The girls in Year 2 began their new topic this week, ‘Wriggle and Crawl’. Armed with clipboards, pooters and magnifying glasses, the girls enjoyed identifying different creatures living in the school environment.

Year 4—Sayers Croft Year 4 had a sensational two days at Sayers Croft this week. Amongst other things, they took part in a blindfold trail, bouldering, orienteering, shelter building and clay modelling.

Sports News PE Star Class of the Week PE star class of the week goes to 3DI for their enthusiasm in lessons.

Year 5 Cricket Year 5 played their second cricket match this week against Feltonfleet. The match was tough and identified our need to improve our bowling. We will be introducing a specific bowling lunchtime club for Year 5 after half term. Players of the matches were Sophia and Ariella. Grace and Frankie showed superb teamwork when batting together, communicating well with each other to get the extra runs when the ball was miss fielded. Phoebe H and Grace also managed to bowl a wicket. Great work girls!

Cricket for Girls Lydia Greenway (England cricketer) has set up a new website called “Cricket for Girls”. She is offering a free Zoom cricket session over half term. Please see the website for more details here.

Tennis The Year 4 tennis girls had their first Surrey league fixture this week against Rowan and Wimbledon. The weather was miserable, however the girls showed off their skills and fought until the end. They came away with a win against Rowan, winning 3-1. Well done to Peyton, Liliana, Alex and Poppy.

Swimming Our Swimmers have been excelling in the pool, inside and outside of School. If your daughter learns an instrument which needs to be brought to school, please ensure that she takes it to the classroom with her when she arrives at school in the morning, rather than instruments being taken to the office.

This Week On Tuesday we had our wonderful May Procession. It was an opportunity, during this month of May that is dedicated to Mary the mother of Jesus, to recognise how important Mary is. We gathered together on Mairlot Lawn for this special service. In particular we thought about the love that there was between Jesus and his mother. We remembered the scene at the Nativity when Mary first cradled Jesus in her loving arms and gazed upon him - her son, but also the saviour of the world. What a love she must have had for Jesus! We are asked to have the same love for Jesus that Mary had. We also remembered the love that Jesus had for his mother. We all know how special our parents are to us and how much we love them. And we can sometimes forget that while we remember that Jesus loves everyone, how full must his heart have been with love for his own mother. We are asked to remember that Jesus shares that same love with each and every one of us. Perhaps, as this month of May comes to an end you can use the Children’s Rosary below to pray with Mary.

And a huge ‘Thank you’ for the beautiful flowers that were all donated to the Princess Alice Hospice.

Fundraising Message from Year 7 Hi everyone, my name is Inde W and I’m part of SPGN (Shetland Pony Grand National)! Here is a little description of my fundraising activities for Bob Champion Cancer Trust. Bob Champion is a famous horse racer who was diagnosed with testicular cancer just before he won the Grand National in 1981. He established the Bob Champion Cancer Trust in 1983 to raise money for cancer research. This year marks his 40th anniversary of his big win and he has walked 191 miles on 40 different racing yards, I walked with him on my Shetland Buttercup for his last walk and then watched him ride for the first time in 10 years! SPGN is a big thing in the equestrian world. As a member we race at very big venues, and all the money that SPGN raises is donated to Bob Champion Cancer Trust. I would appreciate any help you can offer in support of this amazing charity! My JustGiving page is: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/whipple-equestrian/
