Spring Term
4th March 2022
Message from Mrs Conrad What a wonderful celebration of books and literature this week has been! An inspirational author visit, dance workshops around two of our favourite books, numerous competitions, and finally dress up day which saw an array of exciting and unique costumes from staff and pupils alike! On a more sombre note, the girls have been very passionate about helping families in Ukraine. Generous donations have already been dropped off in the Chapel and many girls in the Prep and Senior schools attended a special prayer session at lunch time on Ash Wednesday to pray for peace, as requested by Pope Francis. As we begin this season of Lent, we pray for the needs of our global family and reflect on how we can become instruments of God’s peace on earth.

Talking to Children About Conflict Some of the girls have been talking about the conflict between Russia and the Ukraine in school. The adults in school will always allow space and time for the children to express their feelings and have certainly done so with either individuals or small groups in an age-appropriate secure environment. Whilst, as adults, we do not need to have all of the answers, it is reassuring for children to have an open forum where they feel able to discuss things that they have heard or how they might be feeling. If you would like factual information about the conflict specifically aimed at children, please use the BBC Newsround or First News. There is useful information about how to talk to young children about war here.

World Book Week The whole school celebrated a fun-packed Book Week this week with a visiting author, staff story telling sessions, dance workshops, dressing up and competitions galore. It was fabulous to have this wonderful event back in school after holding an online version last year and the corridors were buzzing with enthusiastic children talking about books.
6KH—Class Assembly Year 6KH treated the school to an assembly packed full of all the work inspired by books which they have completed since September. There was acting, singing and even interviews with 'famous authors' - there was something for everyone!
Year 2—Reading with Year 6 On World Book Day, the girls in Year 2 enjoyed inviting some of the girls in Year 6 to share a book with them. The smiles, engagement and shared love of books shone through.
Year 3—Greek Workshop This week Year 3 arrived in school dressed as Ancient Greeks ready for a day full of storytelling, fact finding and puzzle solving. We went back in time to Ancient Greece and had a lot of fun taking part in retelling Greek myths, learning about Greek weapons and using the knowledge from our topic to answer questions in a quiz! We all had Eureka moments when completing maths puzzles and enjoyed a tactical game trying to defeat each other's armies.
Year 2, Muck, Mess and Mixtures The girls kicked off their new topic 'Muck, Mess and Mixtures' by creating some collaborative pieces of art on canvas. The girls were given free rein with resources but with one aim, to not return to the classroom with clean hands!!
Year 4 USA Road Trip As part of our Road Trip USA Topic, Year 4 have been learning about the US States. Last week, the girls did some detailed research on the infamous New York City! What a place! We looked at a selection of key landmarks, transports, and the vast array of food on offer. With this in mind, we turned our focus to the features of a postcard. Thinking carefully about layout and necessary writing features, the Year 4 girls imagined themselves in the hub of the Big Apple and wrote some wonderfully detailed postcards home. They were fantastic!
Eco & Gardening Club During Eco and Gardening Club, the girls made a homemade bird seed cake using grated cheese, bird seed, suet mix and raisins. Once they had mixed all the ingredients together the girls added water. Before the mixture was added to the recycled yoghurt pots, they carefully made a hole using a pen and threaded a piece of string through so that they could hang it on a branch in the playground. The bird seed cake mixture went into the fridge overnight and the girls hung their pots during break time the following day.
ECO TIP OF THE WEEK If you would like to make one of these cakes for your garden, click here. Please take care if you have anyone allergic to the ingredients or dogs who are allergic to the raisins

This Week On Wednesday we marked the beginning of the season of Lent with our Ash Wednesday Service. During the Service we reflected on the account from Luke’s Gospel where the Zacchaeus is approached by Jesus.
This, perhaps, is the most important point. God always approaches us. He goes out of his way to reveal himself to us and to invite us into his life of Love. All we are called to do is respond, as Zacchaeus did. Zacchaeus fell to his knees. In Lent we too are called to pray, to plug ourselves back into that communication between us and God. Whatever we currently do, we are encouraged to do more during this season of Lent. Zacchaeus showed true repentance for what he had done wrong. He made amends - four times over - for his dishonesty. We too are called to leave our old ways behind. Yes, a simple way to begin is to give up those extras that we don’t really need - sweets, chocolate, etc. But more importantly, we are called to fast from anything that separates us from God and from our neighbour, perhaps selfishness, dishonesty, our negative attitude towards others. What ever it is, fast from it. And finally, Zacchaeus gave away much of what he had. We too are called to give generously to our neighbour, whether financially, or by giving generously of our time.
Sadly, the terrible events in Ukraine have brought home to us how fragile life can be. But it also provides us with many opportunities to help us, and others, through Lent. Firstly, follow Pope Francis’ call to pray for Ukraine as we did as a whole school. Take the opportunity to give thanks for the blessings that we receive that our brothers and sisters in Ukraine no longer have and support our Appeal for Ukraine to show love for our neighbours. However you mark it, have a blessed Lent!
Platinum Jubilee—Tree Planting In honour of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, FOST will be donating an ornamental cherry tree that will be planted, along with a commemorative plaque which has been made by Royal British Legion Armed Forces veterans. It is on the 70th day of the year to symbolise The Queen’s 70th year on the throne. Find out more about ‘The Queen’s Green Canopy’ here. Beth Barnard—Head Girl

We hope that you all have had a lovely week! Please make sure that coats are brought up to ride, even if you don’t end up wearing them! The weather is very unpredictable at the moment, and while we do have some showerproof coats for you to borrow, it is best to bring your own just in case!
Please also make sure that all riders turn up with time to spare before their lessons! This will give you time to get your horse ready and out to the arena. We will also ensure that instructors and yard staff help you get ready so that you can make the most of your riding lesson on the horse!
Easter Pony Days The Easter dates have already been sent out and published, and are available to book on the system. We do have some spaces left, so book now to avoid disappointment! If you would like to be added to the waitlist in case of a cancellation, then please email the office or there is an update on the system where you will be emailed automatically if a space becomes available.
NSEA Competition Reports On Saturday 26th February, after some swapping around we had two teams head to Merrist Wood to compete in the NSEA Show jumping Qualifier in the 70cm and 80cm classes. In the 70cm class, the team - Jackson, Sofie, Izzy, Lilly - did amazingly with four clear rounds! The team came first, and qualified for the NSEA Championships!! Izzy placed 4th as an individual and also qualified for the Championships, while Sofie placed 5th just missing out on that qualification, but qualified for the Championship Plate instead! The other two unfortunately just missed out on the top placings. Well done! In the 80cm, the team didn’t do as well but Lilly and Joe rode two amazing clear rounds. Unfortunately they missed out on the top placings and no one managed to qualify. Congratulations to you all!! And good luck to those heading to Felbridge for the Eventer’s Challenge and Grass Roots on Sunday!
