Message from Mrs Conrad Book Week has certainly been a fantastic and upbeat way to end online learning! The girls clearly enjoyed the author talks with younger girls learning how to illustrate monkeys and penguins with Catherine Vase and the older girls being truly inspired by Abi Elphinstone and the grit, determination and creativity she demonstrated. I understand that some of our girls helped her with ideas for the book she is currently writing so maybe we will see these in print in a few months’ time! The dance workshops were also greatly enjoyed by all the girls as they told the story of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ through music and movement. Huge thanks to Miss Hilder, Mrs Clarke and FOST for organising all these exciting activities and to Mrs Irons for her inspired Masked Reader initiative – I wonder if you can identify all the characters! The staff and I cannot wait to welcome the girls back to school on Monday morning – only three more sleeps to go!!

Great Fun! Spanish Tapas Year 3 have discovered Spanish tapas. This inspired Seren to cook an amazing tortilla and Séarlait to prepare delicious peach slices wrapped in basil leaves and serrano ham for their families. ¡Muy bien, chicas! Nos encantan las tapas. ¡Buen provecho! You can find the recipe for the tortilla here. Señora Chapman

Miss Hilder’s cat, Olive, has been basking in the sunshine amongst the beautiful blooming crocuses in her garden. Spring is finally on it’s way.

India Rose had a wonderful weekend baking Maltese almond cookies!

Great Work! Year 4 Research This week in our topic lessons we learnt more about the Native American tribe, The Iroquois! We researched and presented our findings in a range of different ways using subheadings, illustrations and bullet points. The main character in our story this week is part of The Iroquois Tribe and this research helped with our understanding of where he came from!

Great Work! Year 2—Muck, Mess and Mixtures Year 2 have been investigating bubbles as part of their 'Muck, Mess and Mixtures' topic. We discussed what the 'best bubble' meant and then we tested different soap products to see which created the best bubbles. Lots of frothy fun!

Year 3—Urban Pioneers As part of their topic Urban Pioneers, Year 3 created an urban landscape using some original methods including Lego, recycling items, paint and much more. They spent much of their optional time including two topic lessons on this task and chose which amenities to put in their landscape.

Year 2—Wonderlands Darcy and Isabella created fantastic 'wonderlands' as part of one of their optional activities this week linked to our World Book Day dance workshop and work in English on Alice in Wonderland. The girls used their imagination and creativity to produce some stunning worlds - both complete with little animals!

Good Vibrations in Year 4 In Science we have been learning about how sound travels through soundwaves and is caused by vibrations. Last week, we carried out experiments to 'see' the vibrations and this week we explored pitch by making our own instruments.

Mad Hatter’s Tea Parties This week, some of the girls in Year 3 enjoyed virtual ‘Mad Hatter’s Tea Parties’ with their friends at home!

Great Work! World Book Week Despite not being in school, there has been a real 'buzz' online this week as we have celebrated Book Week virtually. On Tuesday we were treated to talks by authors Catherine Vase and Abi Elphinstone, who inspired the girls by talking about their books, how they get ideas for their writing and demonstrating illustrations. On Thursday everyone (including some teachers!) took part in lively dance workshops presented by West End in Schools on the theme of 'Alice in Wonderland'. There have been some amazingly creative activities going on across the year groups, as you will see from the plethora of pictures in this bulletin! Fabulous work girls. And last, but not least, the question on everyone's lips is.......who are the readers behind the masks?? You have until Monday to make your guesses! Next week, when the girls are back in school, they will be able to swap their World Book Day Token for one of the special £1 books - we have a limited amount of each of the books. Also, Years 4-6 will be able to bring in £6 to buy a signed copy of Abi Elphinstone's 'Everdark'. If any parents are interested in purchasing any of Catherine Vase's books, please let us know before 15th March and we can arrange an order of them to be delivered to school. We would also like to offer our particular thanks to FOST for organsing for Catherine Vase to speak to the girls in Years 1 and 3 about her beautifully illustrated and funny books.

World Book Day inspired Scarlet in Year 3 to write a letter to her favourite author—David Walliams.

This is Louisa’s design of the Mad Hatter which was drawn in lessons related to our dance workshop on Alice in Wonderland.

Great Work! Year 6—Poems Year 6 wrote poems inspired by Alice's fall down the rabbit hole.

Year 1– Alice in Wonderland In the spirit of Book Week, and in preparation for our Alice in Wonderland Dance workshop this week, the girls listened to, and learnt, the story of Alice in Wonderland. We thought about what we already knew about the story, which was lots, and we even learnt a little about the author, Lewis Carroll. Did you know that he died in Guildford! We also looked at how Disney took the magic of Lewis Carroll's famous story and brought it to life...twice! The girls designed their own covers for the book. They were exciting, colourful and detailed.

Year 6 took part in a book scavenger hunt around their homes—sharing their findings with their class and Miss Hilder on Teams.

Great Work! Year 5—Book Scenes Year 5 were set the task of recreating a scene from a book during Book Week. Can you guess which books these photos are from?

Music News Musicians of the Week Lucy A and Amelia H for consistently good engagement and contribution to the music lessons during lockdown Amaya H and Searlait W for very good work on instruments. Evie B and Peyton S for consistently good engagement and contributions to music lessons during lockdown. Daniella C for excellent work in music theory.

Instrumental Lessons If your daughter would like to start lessons on an instrument, please email Mrs Yalden and she will arrange this. Outside School Summer in Year 5 has been working hard on improving her gymnastics during lockdown. She has worked specifically hard on her single stag handstand and headstand. Great work Summer!

India in Year 4 has enjoyed developing her football skills with her brother outside of PE lessons. Well done India!

This Week What are you looking forward to when the pandemic restrictions are removed. All of us are looking forward with joy to our return to school, but what else have you missed? Perhaps, like many, you have spent much time during the past year watching films and boxsets online peering at tiny images on a phone or other digital device. Certainly, many are looking forward to returning to watch a film on the big screen in a cinema. It’s a totally different experience! But for many, part of the enjoyment of going to the cinema includes watching the previews of films that are soon to be released. These previews cleverly give you a taster of what is to come, without giving away the whole of the plot, the climax or the conclusion. All we get are glimpses that only make sense when we have seen the whole film. In our Gospel reading in Chapel this week, we saw a similar preview (Mark 9:2-13) as we heard the account of the Transfiguration. The disciples were familiar with the human Jesus. They had spent time with him, seen him eating and sleeping, and heard him preach. Yet they had also seen glimpses of the divine Jesus, the powerful miracle worker who could heal the sick and silence the storm. And in the Transfiguration they saw Jesus’ full divinity revealed in all its glory as they had a glimpse of the heavenly kingdom, with the resurrected Elijah and Moses confirming Jesus as the fulfilment of all that the Law and the Prophets had anticipated. As we reflect on this account, confirming Jesus as both fully human and fully divine, we also reflect o how we can recognise glimpses of the Kingdom of God in our lives and look forward, in hopeful joy to God’s kingdom being fully revealed.

We’re so excited that in a few days the girls will be back on site at St Teresa’s. Fear not, FOST has still been busy in the background throughout the lockdown. The 2nd hand uniform shop continues trading and we’re working on some exciting plans for the future, so watch this space…

Recent FOST activity FOST were pleased to contribute to the World Book Day this week by arranging a visit by children’s author Catherine Vase. Catherine spoke to girls in years 1-3 about her books and read some of her titles including ‘The Penguin who wanted to fly’ and ‘The Big Hair Affair’. She also introduced them to the world of book illustration and was very impressed with their drawings. Her books are available for purchase on her website at www.catherinevase.co.uk.

Christmas Fair 2020 Our first Virtual Christmas Fair in December was a huge success! Although we couldn’t be together in person, the monies raised were very much in line with previous years. A huge thanks to all those involved and to parents and the wider school community, including Cranmore pupils who got involved. We’ll definitely be learning from the experience and including some of the virtual elements in our future FOST events.

What’s next? We’ve raised a fantastic amount of money towards our 2nd hand uniform cabin but there’s still some work to do to make it a reality…We’d love to hear your ideas so please do get in touch and get involved – we’re always recruiting new members! Fostst2020@gmail.com
