Message from Mrs Conrad Lights! Camera! Action! This week has seen some Oscar winning performances from Year 6 as they threw themselves into Activities Week. Superb art work was created; fabulous street dance routines were performed; tremendous courage was displayed when climbing the high ropes and jumping on to a trapeze; and outstanding team work was demonstrated as the girls paddled giant rafts down the River Thames. Today also sees the launch of our new marketing video where our prefect team give audiences a virtual tour around our lovely school. Today, every class enjoyed a premiere viewing of the film whilst enjoying some delicious popcorn provided by our wonderful chef, Gary. Please click here to see the film and share it with your family and friends. It would be great if we could make St Teresa’s Prep School go viral!

Helping Hand Club—Request Helping Hands Club would like to make a hedgehog home. We wondered whether anybody had any of the following that they could donate please: •

Wooden Box—e.g. a wine crate

Wood to make a tunnel

Hay or straw

To make a hedgehog house you need an old box such as a wooden wine crate, wood to make a tunnel and some dry leaves hay or straw to fill the box to keep the hedgehogs nice and cosy. Put it in the quietest part of the garden and cover with leaves or logs to make it look as natural as possible—Helping Hands Club

Great Work! Year 2—Bounce In Art this week as part of their 'Bounce' topic, the girls in Year 2 looked at photographs of installation art featuring balls. They then used their marbling skills to create their own class sculpture.

Year 1—RE Year 1 have spent their RE lessons learning about Pentecost this week. They have been so interested in the different things that the disciples witnessed and how Jesus kept his promise! They were particularly excited by the idea of the flames above their heads, and they enjoyed looking at pictures of this. On Friday, the girls made their own Pentecost headbands in RE and suddenly, Year 1 began speaking in different languages! It was a loud afternoon!

Gardening Club In Eco and Gardening Club this week, the girls have been planting lots of seeds including spinach, tomato and wildlife seeds. Hopefully, the wildlife seeds will encourage birds and insects to visit our garden. We are keeping our fingers crossed that there is enough time for the plants to germinate and produce their crop before we break up! Also, we had a look at our sunflower seeds and discovered that many of them had already germinated! We are looking forward to measuring how high they grow.

Year 3—Volcanos Year 3 enjoyed exploring marks to capture the energy and colours of a volcano erupting. Their investigation included using pieces of card, flicking or rolling their paintbrush, using the end of it to draw into the paint or trying left/right handed marks. Tissues were also used to rub for cloud-like effects. These different approaches brought many amazing effects, as well as being a lot of fun!

Year 5—Adopt a Chef In their second "Adopt a Chef" session, Year 5 learned the practical skills of how to safely cut various food items safely. Thinking about textures, tastes and colours the girls made a healthy egg salad. The finished salads were enjoyed during lunch today!

Year 5—RE After reading the passage from the Bible, watching a film clip and discussing various art works, the girls worked in groups to write a section of a poem entitled 'The Road to Emmaus'.

Year 4 Ever wanted to be able to time travel, shape shift or heal almost any injury? Take a visit to Year 4 where they have been designing their own potions and creating bottle labels complete with instructions and warning. Be careful though as if the directions are not followed exactly, there are a wide variety of things that could happen to you and even a few side effects! Year 4 also had a visit from Mrs Curtis, one of our school nurses, who told the girls all about anaesthetic. They learned about developments from the very first anaesthetic in 1846 for a tooth extraction to modern techniques used today. During the session, the girls learnt a huge amount and once back in class, they presented their information to clearly show their understanding. Well done Year 4 and a very big thank you to Mrs Curtis for sharing her knowledge and answering questions.

Music News Musicians of the Week Zara O’D and for very good chime bar playing. Evie B and Tabby D for finding out some unusual information about John Williams.

Music Exams Well done to the following girls who played beautifully when recording their violin exams this week – Evangelina P, Alice C and Jessica T

Exam Success Congratulations to Layla in Year 5 who has gained a distinction for her Grade 1 Musical Theatre exam. Well done Layla! Please let Mrs Yalden know if your daughter has achieved any musical success outside school.

Instrumental Lessons Parents are reminded that girls taking instrumental lessons should find time to practise each week. It is an important part of learning an instrument and allows progress to be made. Individual teachers will be happy to suggest suitable amounts of practice at home according to the age and level of your daughter. It is helpful to have a suitable space for the girls to work on their music and all girls learning instruments other than the piano should have a music stand at home please.

Sports News Although only a four-day week, it has been very busy in the PE department. Mrs Rowcliffe and Miss Rippington have enjoyed watching both Years 5 and 6 develop their teamwork skills on their outdoor activities at High Ashurst. Year 6 have also developed their climbing, kayaking and raft building skills and learnt where swallows come from. High Ashurst offer family and multi activity days throughout the holidays, so if your daughter enjoyed her trip, do check it out. A quick reminder that all Biathlon entries for Year 3-6 are due in to Miss Rippington by Monday 10th May. PE star class of the week goes to 5HC for their effort in the quad kids athletics activity in PE this week. Last week we had a busy week of fixtures. The girls loved playing against other schools and putting into action what they had learnt in the first few weeks. First up was Year 4. Year 4 A+B teams won with 262-257 and 244-236 runs against Downsend School. Year 6 were up next. Xanthe and Betty managed to catch three balls, taking 15 runs from the other team, meanwhile Briony and Lavinia showed superb determination and communication skills when batting. Year 5s were the last to play, this time against Hawthorns School. 4s were scored in both matches and the importance of accurate bowling was learnt in both teams. A good effort from all girls that played. Our players of the matches were: Year 6: Arabella, Emily, Pascale, Briony, Lavinia and Ava H Year 5: Evangelina and Emily K Year 4: Peyton, Olivia L, Elin, Amelia, India-Rose and Natalia. Good luck to Year 3 who are playing in a cricket fixture today and to the U11’s who are playing in a cricket tournament against Downsend and Danes Hill on Saturday. Fingers crossed the weather holds off! Lottie in Year 6 and Sofie S in Year 5 have been busy training and competing on their horses over the last few months. They recently competed at Coombelands. Their team placed 1st in the 60-65cm and 7075cm Eventers Challenge, which means they qualify for the Hickstead Championships at the end of May. In the individual races, Lottie placed 3rd and Sofie placed 4th, 6th and 8th. Well done girls! I look forward to seeing you progress and good luck in your next competition! Arabella in Year 6 has been enjoying her training with Surrey Cricket, especially playing at different venues. In the Easter holidays, she was excited to have a training session at the Oval (Ken Barrington Centre). Well done Arabella! It sounds like you are having lots of fun! A quick mention to Ava Harrison in Year 6 who is currently training for her ice-skating three mornings a week at 6.30am! This shows superb commitment to her sport, which she clearly loves. Well done!

Fixtures for the next few weeks Monday 17th May: Year 5 Cricket Festival @ Malden Wanderers. 9.30am-12.30pm Tuesday 18th May: Year 6A+B v Danes Hill (A) 2.45pm

Year 6 — Activities Week!

This Week May is traditionally the month when we reflect on the role that Mary played in God’s plan to save his people. In Chapel we reflected on the Biblical account of the Annunciation—that moment when God, through his messenger Gabriel, shared the news that Mary was to bear a son, Jesus, who would be the saviour of the world. We are told that Mary had exactly the type of human reaction that we would expect when presented with such astonishing news. We can only imagine the thoughts that must have gone through her head. However, this did not stop her in her response to God’s request. Despite her fears and her concerns, she answered with a clear ‘Yes’ to God’s request. ‘Behold! I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done unto me according to thy word!’ Mary is the greatest example of faith that we have and we are encouraged to think about her simple ‘Yes’ to God and, in our turn, to say the same. Every day God will call us and ask us to be the one who will bring the presence of Jesus into our world - through acts of kindness, words of gentleness and true signs of love. We ask that we will be given the courage and will to do the same. While we never pray to Mary in the way that we do to God, we do believe that Mary is living the life of the resurrection in heaven, and that she continually prays with and for us. Pope Francis has asked us to pray the Rosary during the month of May, especially for all those affected by the COVID pandemic, so we began, in Chapel, to pray a short form of the Rosary, and we would encourage everyone to do the same as home.
