Smartphone Free Childhood,

One of our Prep parents would like us to share news about a new movement called Smartphone Free Childhood, spearheaded by two concerned mothers in the UK. This movement aims to spark a national conversation about the appropriate age for children to have smartphones.

Smartphone Free Childhood is a grassroots initiative striving to shift the current norm regarding when parents provide smartphones to their kids. Shockingly, 24% of 5-7 year olds in Britain now own smartphones, and by age 12, that number jumps to 97%. The impact of smartphones on children's mental health is now undeniable. Research indicates that the younger a child receives a smartphone, the more detrimental the effects on their well-being. They are urging parents, schools, government, and tech companies to collaborate and redefine the age criteria for smartphone ownership. Our stance is firm: smartphones with unrestricted internet access and social media are unsuitable for children under 16. A basic 'brick phone' suffices for their needs.

Year 3 Art

In their Art lesson this week, Year 3 created their own mosaic tile. They based their ideas on the Romans as inspiration, and took time to firstly select colours, arrange their tesserae in a pattern, glue them down and finally, to grout them. They really do look amazing and even Mr Tindall asked to join in with the lesson!

Year 6 English work

Over the first few weeks of the Summer Term, 6JG have been working on a Literacy project centred around the fantastical world of Pandora. The girls explored a whole range of writing techniques including fronted subordinate clauses, expanded adjectival noun phrasing and higher level punctuation use. Alongside creating fantastical creatures, describing them and discussing their fictional habitats, diets and threats, the Year 6 girls used Copilot AI to instruct the AI to create images of the world of Pandora and more specifically the creatures they had created. Here are a few of their designs, enjoy!

U8 Cricket

On Friday 3rd May, the U8s had their first cricket match of the year. It was a rainy morning but it soon turned dry enough for the girls to continue their matches. It was great to have all the girls playing in a match, we saw some fantastic improvements in their bowling in all 3 teams, some great batting with the girls communicating with each other to score runs. We look forward to the next match in a couple of weeks time! Keep coming to bowling club on a Tuesday lunchtime and practising at home!

U11 Cricket

On Tuesday, we had all the cricket teams out playing matches. The U11E team had an internal match at home on the astro. It was great to see some of them improve on their bowling throughout the game. Well done to Lily S for her match play. The U11B,C&D teams travelled to Freemans, the C team had a very close game and won by 5 runs and the player of the match was Abi F. Unfortunately, the B & D team couldn’t get the win this week but the player of the match was Olivia P.

The U11A team had their first hardball friendly match against St Georges. It was great to see the girls in action. They were all very nervous to begin with but once the game started, and they go into it, the nerves settled and they all worked really hard. Rachel hit a 6 and a couple of 4s, Lilianna hit a couple of 4s and the girls showed some great communication and encouragement throughout the play. Excited to see these girls play another match again!

This Week

On Thursday, the 40th day since Easter, we celebrated the Solemnity of the Ascension. It was wonderful to be able to welcome Fr Charles, the new Parish Priest at Effingham and Fetcham, along with his parishioners, to celebrate Mass with us.

The number 40 is always significant in scripture. It always introduces a time when God is going to interact in a new way to our world. Noah spent 40 days waiting for the flood to subside before he could step out onto the newly cleansed world. Abraham waited 40 days before the Ten Commandments were revealed. And Jesus himself prepared for 40 days in the wilderness before His ministry and the events of his passion, death and resurrection. So the Ascension, falling as it does on the 40th day indicates that something new is going to happen. But what?

The Ascension marks the tipping point in Jesus ministry. As the Incarnate Son of God, Jesus was certainly fully God, but He was also fully human. The Word of God who was there at the very beginning of creation humbled himself to become human, to take on flesh. And as such, His humanity, like all humanity, was limited in time and space. Put simply, Jesus could only do what He could do in the year or so of his earthly ministry, in the area where He lived, at the time He lived. As he declared, triumphantly from the cross on Good Friday, this earthly work was accomplished. But it wasn’t the end of that ministry. Firstly, He was to return to where he had come from, the right hand of His heavenly Father. And secondly, He passed His mission into the hands of his followers, for this mission was no longer restricted to first century Palestine. It was now to spread across the world.

The Ascension marks that point. From His place at the Father’s side, He could continue to bring the Good News of God’s love to the whole world. By inspiring first His disciples, and then countless fellow followers down through the centuries His mission continued. Our presence here, two thousand years later is proof of that mission.

Of course, the disciples did not yet have the power to fulfil that mission but that is a story for next week!

We hope that you all have had a good week!

Now that the weather has become warmer, please make sure that you still come to ride in appropriate clothes, such as leggings or jodhpurs, and a top that covers the shoulders. And do check the forecast as it may still rain occasionally and we only have a few waterproof coats to borrow.

We are looking for a new horse to join our team!
