Dear Parents Congratulations to our pupils who performed in the inaugural performance at the new Opera House in Horsley last night. I am sure this is an experience which they shall never forget. Shelagh and I are very much looking forward to seeing them in action in Tosca later this month. We had a very poignant senior assembly on Monday at which we had a presentation from Barry and Margaret Mizen whose son, Jimmy, was murdered in a violent attack in 2008. They set up a charity in his memory with a mission which is dedicated to young people: To share Jimmy’s story to help all our young people fulfil their potential and build the types of communities we want to live in. In this edition you can also read about the School Council Fair which was a great success; the wonderful time our Bright Stars children had when they were able to handle exotic animals; the Form 2 trip to Legoland and the Form 3 trip to the Living Rainforest. Form 5 enjoyed their residential visit to Bude this week for fun and adventures. Currently, we also have some pupils who are in France as part of the exchange programme with Ombrosa. Our 6th Form pupils have completed their Common Entrance exams and are now looking forward to their special residential trip next week. Many of them will have a competitive weekend of cricket during their mini-tour. Finally, please remember that preparations are well under way for the Picnic in the Paddock so please do buy your tickets soon.

Barry and Margaret Mizen came to Cranmore on Monday to present an assembly to our Senior Department pupils. They gave an inspiring talk on forgiveness and on the importance of turning to God when we suffer. They collected a cheque for over ÂŁ1800 which was raised from Action Day. The funds will go to help support communities in London and to provide safe spaces for young people at risk. Mr Jakubowski Head of RE

We congratulate Freddie who recently received a special merit for his entry in the CISC Inaugural Poetry Competition. Freddie’s poem on the Resurrection was called Life after Life and looks at Resurrection through the eyes of a young person who has a life-changing experience. Well done!

Dear Parents The countdown to the Picnic in the Paddock has begun! With just over a week to go, please ensure that if you haven't already signed up to help, you speak to your class reps for more info on how you can get involved - this event really can't run without you! As a reminder, here are the things we hope you can help out with before the Picnic in the Paddock: • Sign up with your class reps to volunteer on the day if you have not already done so • Compile and return bounty bags (to be left in the bin provided in main car park, by the bridge stairs) • Bring donations of books/DVDs/games/jigsaws - in good condition (to be left in the bin provided, in the main car park, by the bridge stairs) • Cake baking - Cakes to be left in the 6th Form Common room between 8 - 9am and 3 - 4:30pm on Friday 16 June. Many thanks for your continued support. The Picnic in the Paddock Committee

The Mimika Theatre This week the Junior Department had a real treat; we celebrated our Founder’s Day a little early by having a theatre group visit the school. They were called ‘The Mimika Theatre’. They set up a large dome shaped tent in our gym and this became the venue for the performances. The title was ‘Landscapes’ and the performances lasted for 45 minutes. ‘Landscapes’ used a variety of techniques including puppetry, an image-based storyline, an immersive stereo soundtrack and a variety of sensory events and visual effects to involve and engage the audience, whatever their individual development level. The children and staff were absolutely enthralled by this unique approach to theatre. It captured their imagination and the feedback from the children was overwhelming, and I quote, ‘The best thing I have ever seen!’ It cannot get much better than that! Sing! As we race towards the end of the Summer Term, I would like to take a moment to thank every member of a choir here at Cranmore. It has been a tremendous year for the choirs and it wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication and loyalty of our pupils. Congratulations to the choirs who performed at our Sing! concert just before half term. It was one of many highlights this year and a true celebration of the singing at Cranmore. I would also like to thank Mr Hall, Mr Hinds, Mr Harris and Mrs Mellstrom for their support and the role they played in making this evening such a success.

Miss Fourie Music Co-ordinator (Junior Department) & Choirs

Living Rainforest Visit On Thursday 25th May, the 3rd Form set off for a fun-filled trip to the Living Rainforest. With soaring temperatures and high levels of moisture, the bus journey helped us to acclimatise to the conditions that we would experience once we entered the rainforest itself! To begin with, we were guided through the rainforest and had the opportunity to learn more about the range of fascinating wildlife living there, including lizards, birds, butterflies, monkeys and even an armadillo! Our tour guides were very impressed with how knowledgeable the Cranmore pupils were and complimented them on their wonderful manners. Once our tours were finished, we completed our worksheets and then we had another chance to explore the rainforest in small groups. Some of the groups were lucky enough to spot the slumbering sloth! Before we knew it, it was time to set off back to Cranmore. The Third Form would like to thank all of the staff and parent helpers involved. Mr Heaver 3rd Form Co-ordinator

On Friday 26th May, the School Council hosted the School Council Fair for the Senior department, in order to raise money for Shooting Star Chase. Shooting Star Chase is a children’s hospice charity caring for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families. It is for this reason that the School Council voted to support this charity. There were many stalls and activities which kept us all occupied, for example, Lucky Dip, Beat the Goalie, Toilet Paper Toss, Hula Hoop Challenge and How Many Sweets in the Jar? As you will see from the photographs, great fun was had by all. Thanks to the children’s enthusiasm and to the support of parents and Cranmore staff, almost £800 was raised. School Council

To the Parents of children in the Senior Department Dear Parents, Senior Department Sports day is coming up on Friday 23rd June. Staff in the Sports Department, together with the House staff, have been sorting out teams to ensure all children are involved in the day. Final teams will be posted in the gym changing room by Monday 12th June and the timetable of events is in this edition of the Chronicle and also on the website. Printed programmes will be available on the day. 

All events will be held on the field behind the pavilion. Field events will start at 10.00 am except for the 6th form who will start at 9:30 am. Track events on the 23rd June will start promptly at 2pm and events will conclude by 4.30pm.  Children are expected to remain until the end of all the events and support their House. They will then be asked to return to their classrooms and collect their kit bags and uniform.  Every child who is participating will need their House polo in addition to clean kit. Also a water bottle or drink, sun screen and a hat or waterproof depending on the weather forecast.  If you are coming to watch the field events in the morning, please be aware of throwing events and take care when crossing the field. Please could I ask spectators with young children to keep them with you at all times to avoid any unnecessary accidents. Spectators may like to bring their own chairs or rugs. On this occasion, children will be allowed to travel home in their sports kit. Please could I ask parents to check that their child has their school shoes with them when they leave school. There will be a short Late Class on Sports Day for children waiting for collection at 5pm. Should it be necessary to cancel the event due to inclement weather, an announcement will be posted on the school web site, www.cranmoreprep.co.uk by 10am. The car park is always exceptionally busy on Sports Day. Please could I ask parents attending sports day NOT to double park or park in such a way that prevents another parent from getting out. Should you foresee any difficulties please do not hesitate to contact me. Yours sincerely, Susan Walker Deputy Head
