Dear Parents I must congratulate our youngest members of the Cranmore community; the children in Bright Stars gave a fabulous sing-a-long concert this week which was simply superb. Yesterday we had our traditional celebration of Mass for Founder’s Day which is also a special occasion for our 6th Form leavers too. The new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) was officially opened yesterday with a wonderful display of netball skills. I am sure we shall enjoy many competitive fixtures in the years ahead. This edition of the Chronicle has lots of photos from the various trips and other activities which have been going on recently. We have a packed programme for our final week and I look forward to seeing many of you at these end of year events.

Well done to Lower Prep L who presented their class assembly last week twice! Firstly, to the Junior department and then for a second time in front of the Whole School! It was such a confident performance from you all.

Lower Prep LC performed their class assembly on Wednesday. Our assembly was all about growing up and what we have learnt to do this year in Lower Prep. We also thought about what we want to be when we grow up. They loved performing and singing to their parents and had lovely smiles on their faces throughout. The class made beautiful flower pictures choosing their favourite shapes and colours. Well done LC, a wonderful assembly! Miss Cardnell

Senior Sports Day 2017 After all the heat of the previous week, luckily Sports Day was a comfortable temperature with patchy cloud. The field events took place in the morning and there were new records in the high jump. James Fortescue equalled the third form record jumping 1.26m and William Harris set a new record in the fifth form event jumping 1.42m. The afternoon track events went well with some exciting races. There were again new records set. Alexander Wood broke the third form 600m record, previously held by George Williams, who then set a new record in the fifth form 400m. Milo Roe broke the fourth form 800m record. All the children performed very well, giving their best for their house, with every child’s points counting towards the final total. When everything was added up, the result this year was a win for Stokes. Well done. Junior Victor Ludorum was Theo Kemp and the Intermediate was shared between James Fortescue and Milo Roe. There were some great performances in the Seniors, resulting in a four way tie between Josh Shaw, Ollie Verny White, Oliver Pointeau and George Williams Mrs Attree Head of Athletics

Athletics Round Up It has been a busy couple of weeks on the athletics front. We started on Saturday 17 June with a meet hosted by Donhead for our U8 to U11s. It was a team competition with every point counting towards a team total. It was a very hot afternoon and everyone performed superbly. When all the points had been added up, we were delighted to find that we were the overall winners, retaining the shield for the third year in a row. Well done to everyone. A great team effort. Monday 19 June saw some athletes from years two to five competing at the West Surrey Meet, with the older ones having the chance to qualify for and represent the West Surrey area team at the National Prep School finals in Birmingham. All the athletes did very well against the best of the best in the area but Milo Roe deserves special mention for his win in the 800m. He broke the meet record that has stood since 1978 running it in a time of 2’27.3 and is off to Birmingham on the 4th July to compete in the Nationals. Good luck, Milo. Last Tuesday, we were in Tonbridge with the U11 and U13’s. Again some good performances and medals for the U13 relay team and Josh Shaw in the shot and 200m. Sunday 25th June then saw the U11 and U13 teams competing at St Albans in the National Catholics meet where, I am delighted to say, we finished as runners up in both age groups against some very strong competition. All the team ran, threw and jumped well and we had twenty medals in total, Josh Shaw, Ollie Verny White and Freddie Van Every winning three medals each. Both relay teams ran superbly to finish in first place, all changeovers being expertly done. All the team members should be very proud of their performances on the day. Thank you to all the athletes and their parents for what has been a busy few days.

Only Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out in the Midday Sun! It certainly felt like that when the Post-CE cycle ride was scheduled for what turned out to be one of the hottest days of the year. We usually manage the 34 mile Downs Link from Shoreham to Bramley but the weather conditions that day meant we had to reduce it. Although the 16 mile section from Southwater Park to Bramley was mostly shaded by trees, it still presented a challenge to which Form 6 rose. We stopped at Cranleigh for a picnic lunch and a little more exercise on the adventure playground before completing the last lap to Bramley. Everyone who started, competed the ride, so congratulations all round and many thanks to all the parents who rode with us or supported us. Mr Martin

An Exciting Sail! At the beginning of last week we thought the annual tall ships voyage would be becalmed and in tropical heat; how wrong we were!! The clouds came in, temperatures dropped to the low 20s and, best of all, winds of 15/20 knots gave us perfect sailing conditions. After a last meal ashore at Pizza Express we were off into the Solent. Hauling up the sails was hard work but everyone soon got into the routine. Taking the helm was physically tough but also exciting; steering a 22 metre yacht weighing 57 tonnes and sailing at 12 knots is hard enough but with the strong wind, choppy sea and the boat heeling at over 40 degrees it was a real challenge. Exhausted but happy we headed to Cowes and moored up overnight. We were up early on Sunday and the younger members of the crew went up the 100ft mast to take in the view before we sailed! It was then out into the Solent again for a cruise out into the channel before tacking back to Portsmouth. Mr Martin

Message from the Second Hand Shop Dear Parents Thank you for all your custom over this past year. The second hand shop continues to be a source of revenue for the CPA and also a valuable resource for parents and children alike, who need anything from the next size up to an emergency pair of shorts or swimmers! We pride ourselves in being there for you all and give our time freely and happily. May we please ask that a few housekeeping rules be observed going into year 2017/18. When filling out white tickets for commission based sales, please write clearly and in full where requested. Cheques cannot be written successfully to people with just a surname to go on, and also cannot be cashed if they are consequently written out incorrectly. Please write clearly. Not all names or addresses are as obvious to the reader as they are to the writer. Do not put a price for any item of Cranmore uniform or shoes; we will price these. However, please do price items bought elsewhere, eg. cricket bats or ski wear. We ONLY accept payment by cash or cheque. We have NO facility for taking payment by card, sorry. We do, however, require payment!! We have a system whereby we can give you an emergency item for that day and payment can be made later. But this is for emergencies only, please. We are getting an increasing amount of people coming in expecting to take items away without payment being made at the point of sale. Please bring in cash or a cheque to cover the cost of your purchase. A round of cheques has just been posted. If you feel you are due commission from sales and have not received a cheque in the next week or so, please contact me. Sadly we say goodbye to Michelle Cunningham this term. Michelle has worked in the shop for many years and we will miss her. From September, we welcome a new member to our team, Claire Rossi. Thank you once again for all your support. Lorraine, Michelle, Louise, Carol and Claire. (Lorraine 07711 261 386)

Form 3 trip to Fishbourne Roman Palace On General Election Day, the Form 3 visited Fishbourne Roman Palace in West Sussex, the brainchild of one Tiberius Claudius Togidubnus – who else! The weather gods were on our side….just, and very soon mosaics, army clothing, amphorae and other artefacts were being scrutinized and analysed. A few lucky ones even had the opportunity to don Roman clothing, and mightily impressive they looked! We had lunch outside before paying a visit to the gift shop where the purchase of a ‘Mood Ring’ was top of the agenda for many of the group. It was then onto the coach, back to Cranmore and time to reflect on what had been a good day. My thanks to Ms Hunt and to all members of staff who helped out and accompanied Form 3 on the trip. Carpe Diem? I think the pupils certainly did. Mr MacKinnon Head of History

Form 4 participated in an 11 mile ramble on Friday 16 June. After being dropped at Holmwood Railway station, we walked cross country to Leith Hill (the highest point in Surrey) where we had lunch and enjoyed the beautiful views towards the South Downs. In the afternoon, we followed the Greensand Way, climbing up onto the North Downs and beginning the last leg to Cranmore. This stretch proved challenging, however, and despite everyone’s best efforts, the last two and a half miles had to be completed by minibus. Nevertheless, it was a memorable day out and my thanks go to the parents who joined us, and also to Mrs Hibbs and Miss Schembri. Mr Chapman

FORM 4 TRIP TO BATTLE On a blisteringly hot day, the hottest of the year so far, Form 4 paid a visit to the site of arguably the most famous battle in English history Hastings. We were met by appropriately dressed ‘medieval’ Battle Abbey staff who proceeded to give pupils an illuminating insight into the story behind the battle, the weapons used and how it was won. Shields were then issued, sides taken and both Saxons and Normans were then escorted to the main battle area - organised chaos ensued and, yes, the Normans won again! There followed a tour of the Abbey ruins, a walk around part of the battlefield and visitor centre all of which went by in a flash. We ate our picnic lunch outside on this glorious day and then there was just enough time to rush into the shop to buy the obligatory medieval weapon, before the coach arrived to take us back to Cranmore. A good day, and many thanks to Mr Jamison for his help on the trip and, likewise, to all the accompanying members of staff. Mr MacKinnon Head of History

Water Sports Holiday Summer 2018
This could be you! For the 4th year running, we are heading to Azu Rivage in South West France for a fabulous Water sports holiday on the warm shallow water of Lac Soustons from 15 - 22 July 2018. We will windsurf, sail laser dinghies as well as exciting dart catamarans not to mention kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and trail biking in the forest. Rockley’s team of qualified instructors will ensure everyone gets the most out of each session! Due to the popularity of this centre, I have only been able to secure 25 places though I am trying to get additional space based on previous demand. The sooner I can confirm our reservation, the more chance we have to take everyone who will want to come. For more details contact Mr Martin.
