6 DECEMBER 2021

Message from the Headmaster Our Egyptologist visitor on Wednesday had the Year 4 pupils fascinated with stories of ancient history and the pharaohs. His discussions on hieroglyphics, architecture, art and monuments captivated the minds of the children and his personal journeys of discovery to Egypt to find and hold ancient artifacts had everyone enthralled. The Year 2 and 3 Nativity Lights, Camel, Action! was certainly one of the highlights of the week. It was packed full of energy with incredible singing, dancing and acting and was immensely entertaining throughout. We were all so fortunate to be able to come together and appreciate the talents of the children. After all their hard work, Year 2 and 3 pupils visited London to see the Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre and had the opportunity to enjoy the story set on the plains of the Serengeti bringing the award-winning story to life. Year 6 pupils had a festive outing to the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford to watch Dick Whittington. This enabled them to consolidate the exploration of pantomime in their Drama lessons. Upper Prep and Senior School pupils are already excited about the auditions for the school production of Bugsy Malone. They will take place next term and I am delighted pupils will have yet another opportunity to hone their performance skills over the coming months. Have a restful weekend.

Mr Everitt

Lights, Camel, Action! Year 2 and Year 3 loved performing 'Lights, Camel, Action!' to their parents this week. We were all blown away by their wonderful singing, dancing and how they delivered their lines with such confidence.

Year 4 Egyptian Workshop Year 4 were visited by Mr Egypt, an Egyptologist, to further explore their history topic on ancient Egypt. The pupils started the day with life as a small child and progressed throughout the civilisation’s timeline to the final pharaoh, Cleopatra. On the journey, the children learnt an Egyptian dance, practised Egyptian hieroglyphics and maths, handled real artefacts found by Mr Egypt in tombs and participated in a mummy wrapping contest. The day ended with a truly memorable and inspiring story followed by prizes made from real papyrus. Mr Peach, Year 4 Form Tutor

Nativity in our Nursery

In Nursery this week, the children have enjoyed participating in lots of Christmas craft activities. The children enjoyed their Nativity play and were wonderful angels and stars. In our RE session, the children have been learning all about Advent and the meaning of Christmas and acted out their very own journey to Bethlehem. Ms Luke, Head of Nursery

Festive Phonics in Reception Reception have been practising their blending of CVC words this week. They had to match Christmassy pictures with the corresponding word and then think about the letters that make that word. We are very proud of all the children in Reception for working so hard on their Phonic skills! Mrs Green, Reception

Sports Roundup The following rugby matches have taken place over the last week: U10s vs Rokeby, U11s vs St George's, U12s and U13s vs Sevenoaks. We also had a great swimming gala against Danes Hill and a fantastic racquets fixture against Shrewsbury House. Mr Hodgson, Director of Sport

Music News Congratulations to Otis W (6EF) who gave a fine performance on his cello of ‘Russian Wedding’ during assembly on Monday. This was all the more impressive as he played the piece by memory.

Mr Harris, Director of Music

Pantomime Time for Year 6 The Year 6 pupils were very excited to be going to the Pantomime on Tuesday 7 th December to watch Dick Whittington in Guildford. The performance was full of energy, modern themes, involving saving the independent retail shops on the high street and avoiding the takeover of Ratazon and Rataroo. The pupils experienced the joys of audience participation, learning dances and songs. The moral of the play was “Don’t stop believing!” and have a great Christmas. Mrs Hanson, Head of Drama

Year 6 Exchange Christmas Letters Year 6 pupils have written carefully penned Christmas letters to residents in Dene Place Care Home in West Horsley. In them, they wished the residents well and told them about their hopes for Christmas this year. In return, the residents of Dene Place will be sharing letters with our Year 6 pupils about their memories of Christmas past and the traditions that went with them. Mr Chapman, Head of Year 6
