7 FEBRUARY 2022 Message from the Headmaster It has been an incredibly busy half term at Cranmore. This week, we particularly enjoyed welcoming parents of children in our Lower Prep School to the music assembly and Reception and Year 1 to ‘Come and See’. Our Year 5 pupils enjoyed the opportunity to attend a French breakfast morning which was hosted at St Teresa’s. Following on from the recent success of the LAMDA examination, over 100 pupils auditioned for acting roles, playing instruments and supporting the technical team for Bugsy Malone. We are now beginning our preparation for the school production which will be held in the summer term. Year 5 are preparing for their performance of Rocking Romans to complement their learning in History, whilst Year 4 prepare for their performance in March of Plastic Pirates, with all their costumes made from recycled items. There have been an encouraging number of entries for the ABRSM practical exams and I am sure pupils will take time over half-term to rehearse their pieces. Our pupils have continued to enjoy sporting success with over 200 fixtures being played so far this term. Cranmore has won both the Murray Cup and the Dunkley Shield, the U13 Squash Squad remain unbeaten, five pupils have been selected for the ESSKIA Ski Squads, some of our keen runners have been selected to represent Surrey in the London South-East Cross-Country Competition and we finished with silver medals in the Surrey Schools swimming competition. These successes are a credit to the talent and enthusiasm of our pupils together with the dedication of the sports staff led by Mr Hodgson. I am delighted to share with you that Mr Hodgson has been appointed as Executive Director of Sport for the Effingham Schools Trust. He will continue in his role at Cranmore and will coordinate the future planning for both schools. Mr Hodgson’s firm belief in sport for all and vision for young people to grow in confidence, personality and character will ensure that all pupils thrive academically whilst living a lifestyle that promotes physical and mental wellbeing. As you know, we were visited by ISI inspectors this week. I would like to extend my thanks to our parents for completing questionnaires, and to our pupils and staff for their enthusiasm and hard work hosting the inspectors; both have been exceptional in their efforts during this half of the term and I would like to wish them a restful and well-deserved break next week.

Mr Everitt

Mental Health Week This week the Upper Prep and Senior pupils have taken part in a series of different activities for Children’s Mental Health Week. These have ranged from Mindfulness in Year 4 to Karaoke in Year 8. The theme this year was ‘Growing Together’ and we encouraged pupils to consider how they have grown and have helped others to grow.

Five Ways to Wellbeing

Mr Heaver took 8MH along to the Chapel on Monday as part of Mental Health Week. They took some time to be still, pray and reflect.

Mental Health Week Year 5 pupils have been creating their own support balloons to show who helps and supports them as they grow.

Year 4 have been focusing on developing a growth mindset. They discussed how making a mistake can be a 'good mistake', which allows them to grow as learners. We talked about Thomas Edison and how the growth mindset which he displayed resulted in the invention of the lightbulb. We concluded the week with a practical activity, building a tower out of spaghetti and marshmallows, to encourage the development of a growth mindset attitude towards tackling a challenging problem.

Music News On Wednesday we had a fantastic Music Assembly for the Lower Prep pupils. A selection of performers played the cello, the violin and the piano. We also had a recorder duet. Well done to all pupils involved.

Mrs Thornton, Lower Prep Music Coordinator

Congratulations to Billy W (8MH) who gave an excellent performance of Ecossaise in G on the piano during assembly on Monday.

Year 2 pupils have fun at Forest School

Year 2 pupils have been exploring, playing and learning about different species of British birds at Forest School.

Reception and Year 1 Reception and Year 1 were delighted to welcome in their parents this week for ‘Come and See’. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to share all their hard work and show off their beautiful classrooms. Thank you to all who were able to attend and support.

Reception were visited by Mrs Kang this week, who helped Miss Gallop with a very special RE lesson all about Sikhism. We learnt how sharing is important to lots of faiths, and enjoyed trying some chapattis! They were also extremely excited to meet some amazing animals in their classroom this week. They were able to meet a wide range of animals, learn facts about each one and even pet some of them!

Nursery News Nursery and Pre-Nursery were lucky to have a special visit from Animazing this week. They learnt all about various warm and cold-blooded animals and their habitats. Some of the children were extremely brave and handled the snake and the lizard! In the garden this week the children wanted to have their own ‘building site’, and loved using the wheelbarrows, the large community blocks and wearing the hard hats. Ms Luke Head of Nursery

Sports Roundup The final week of our regular rugby season has seen the school play its 300th rugby match of this academic year. Many afternoons both on The Henderson Field and The Paddock have seen superb rugby matches being played, with whole year groups involved showcasing their rugby skills. This week also saw the conclusion of The Murray Cup, with the U13s playing on Monday evening. I am very pleased to say that the U13A team won 30 - 20 which meant the overall final score was 8 - 0 to Cranmore. Cranmore was unbeaten across all age groups from the U9s through to the U13s which is unprecedented!

A huge thank you to our Head of Rugby, Mr O'Neill and all staff involved in making it a very successful rugby season.

In other news, our Ski Squad enjoyed using Aldershot for training on Friday, our Senior Scholars had testing in their Scholarship and Performance session, and in PE we have introduced hockey skills to lay the foundations for our hockey season.
