8 NOVEMBER 2021 Message from the Headmaster On Saturday morning the Henderson Fields looked immaculate and were filled with parents, staff and pupils from Cranmore and Rokeby for the annual Henkes Shield tournament. As ever, it proved to be a closely contested event with the Cranmore sides displaying immense skill and composure under pressure to win the competition. The winning tally over the 36 times the event has taken place is now evenly balanced with 18 wins for both schools. A huge thank you to all the staff involved in coordinating the event throughout the morning. That evening an excited group of over 700 pupils, parents and staff came together from across the Trust to enjoy the Cranmore Fireworks display. The weather was perfect, the mulled wine sold out and the glowstick stand hectic as we were thoroughly entertained by the incredible display. Thank you to CPA and everyone involved in arranging the spectacular event and for bringing our community together. On Wednesday, we were extremely fortunate to have our visiting award winning author, Onjali Raúf, at Cranmore. She came directly from COP26 in Glasgow and spoke inspirationally about her role in multiple charities that highlight various political issues from human rights to the environment, poverty and racism. Her books explore these issues sensitively and judging by the number of questions the pupils had at the end of the presentation; they were fully engaged throughout. Finally, congratulations to all pupils who presented their LAMDA pieces to parents this week. They can take great confidence from their performances of monologues, public speeches, book extracts and poems. Have a lovely weekend. Mr Everitt

Visit by Onjali Rauf

Year 4 were very fortunate to meet best-selling author Onjali Rauf on her visit to Cranmore this week, where she took time to talk about her book The Great Foodbank Heist which tells the story of a boy who is reliant on school breakfast clubs, free school meals and foodbanks. The pupils asked Onjali many questions regarding her experiences of volunteering at foodbanks in London and why she wanted to write a book based on it. Onjali’s presentation was inspirational and pupils were also very keen to know where the local foodbanks are and how to donate. Years 5 - 8 attended a very special assembly with Onjali, who talked to us about her new book, The Lion Above The Door. Not only did pupils learn about the protagonist's search for an ancestor who fought in the Second World War, but they also benefitted from the thought-provoking links that Rauf made with historical racism and the need to remember contributions to history made by all the countries and races across the world. Pupils had the chance to ask questions and to listen to a reading in year groups throughout the morning, and we were very proud of the interesting and well-worded questions they posed, including 'What is your favourite part about writing a book - the start, the middle or the end?' (Onjali Rauf loves the beginning, hates the middle, and is happy to get the end!)

Raising money for Cherry Trees My congratulations to all the Upper Prep and Senior pupils for the amazing array of talents they displayed at our annual Action Day. This was a tremendous occasion and all done with a sense of positivity and fun! This year we are raising funds for local charity, Cherry Trees, and I am thrilled that we have already raised £812. Donations continue to roll in. If you are able to donate please follow this link: https://www.cherrytrees.org.uk/fundraisers/ cranmore-action-day-2021 Mr Harris, Director of Music

Lamda and historical re-enactments in Drama On Tuesday 9th November, pupils from years 5, 6 and 7 presented their LAMDA pieces to wonderfully supportive parents. They delivered their performances of monologues, public speeches, book extracts and poems with real confidence and clarity. An audience helped them to build performance skills and learn about the importance of pitch, pace, volume and eye contact. These will be transferable and essential skills for the future. Also this week, Year 5 pupils, have been using their Drama lessons to complement their History learning by bringing the Roman invasion of Britain to life. They have been taking on iconic characters, such as Julius Caesar and Boudicca in preparation for a performance in the Spring Term. Mrs Hanson, Head of Drama

Year 5 Team building day at High Ashurst On Monday 8th November, Year 5 went to High Ashurst activity centre for a day of outdoor teambuilding. The boys had a fantastic day in the glorious autumn sun: solving puzzles, scrambling through obstacle courses, swinging from high ropes and leaping for trapezes at stomach-churning heights. Everyone got involved with huge enthusiasm and developed some valuable skills along the way. A very big well done and thank you to all involved for a really enjoyable and productive day. Mr Lamport, Head of Year 5

Class treats for 3RF and 1AB As a class treat for filling up their marble jar, 1AB got to decorate and eat a gingerbread man. They were delicious! 3RF also filled their marble jar. They chose a chocolate fountain with marshmallows as their treat.

Autumnal fun at Forest School In Science this week the children really enjoyed learning all about the human body. They looked at X-rays and drew around their body, labelling the correct body part. They had their weekly visit to the library, where they listened to a story and shared books. In the garden they children used the large community blocks to build towers on their ‘building site’. Ms Luke, Head of Nursery

Reception to the rescue! This week in Reception, we had a visit and a letter from a Squirrel! A cheeky fox had stolen all his nuts and we needed to help retrieve them. The children then wrote back to the squirrel to let him know we had collected his acorns for him. They also decided to create posters to keep the cheeky fox away. Mrs Green & Mrs Prothero, Reception

On Monday 15th November, we will be taking part in Odd Socks Day. Pupils in Years 1-8 are invited to wear odd socks to show how unique we all are.

Sports Roundup The Henkes Shield took place on Saturday morning which is always the last event of the football season. Attended by over 250 players and families, this year's matches didn't disappoint with outstanding football being played across all age groups. Yet again the score on the day was very close with Cranmore winning 5 points to 3. This takes the overall score to 18 - 18. If Cranmore are fortunate to take the spoils next year, it will be the first time that Cranmore have led since 1999. Having completed a block of evasion and invasion games in PE, this week saw the start of net and wall games. Good luck to our racquets squad playing today at CLFS and we wish our ski squad well on Sunday who are competing at the Surrey Championships. Mr Hodgson Director of Sport
