Dear Parents I shall be in Oxford from Wednesday lunchtime onwards next week as I shall be attending the annual Catholic Independent Schools Conference (CISC). This gathering of Head Teachers began with a handful of schools in the 1990s and has grown rapidly over the years so that virtually every Independent Catholic School in the UK, and a few from overseas, is a member. This will be my 23rd consecutive conference and, as Vice-Chairman, it is always a pleasure to welcome Heads from different parts of the country who are engaged in our common mission to give our children a first-class education underpinned by Gospel values.

You will be aware from media reports that schools are required to promote British values and this has become a significant element in any school inspection. However, it is worth examining some of these aspects more closely.

One well-known Jesuit with considerable expertise in education has refuted the expectation that we should be actively promoting ‘tolerance’ which has been identified as a key British value. For him, the ethos of a Catholic school is not about tolerance but rather ‘forgiveness’. On reflection, one can see why this is the case. A strong school community, such as exists at Cranmore, can never be about simply tolerating others but must reflect the fundamental Christian values of love and forgiveness.

Dear Parents Welcome back to the new term!

We are already in the full swing of events and lots of hard work! This week in my assemblies I have been talking about ‘Treasures’ and what we hold close to our hearts. I had some very interesting answers, iPads being one of them! You will be pleased to hear that other ‘treasures’ were talked about including you all.

Please could I remind all Bright Stars and Lower Prep parents that there is a Coffee Morning on Tuesday 17th January in the Hospitality Suite from 8.309.15 am. This is a good opportunity to share ideas and ask any questions. It is totally informal and I will be available to talk to you.

Please remember to send your child to school with gloves, hat and a warm top coat for outdoor play as the weather gets colder.

The children in Form One are beginning a new topic on India this term and decided to get a stunning start. They were treated to an afternoon of activities designed to whet everyone’s appetite and generate some excitement about the lessons to come.

When asked whether they enjoyed tasting the food, making Rangoli patterns or doing Bangra dancing best, they could simply not choose between them!

Launch the Science Club Science Club returned to Cranmore this week, with an emphasis on the aeronautical. An enthusiastic team of designers developed gliding aircraft and took part in a distance challenge. We learnt that the wings that give lift in a glider do not have to be flat or foil-shaped and experimented with hoop-shaped designs.

The most successful craft, which flew the farthest, were built by Michael Earle and James Drew.

Science Club meets on Mondays, between 4 and 5pm, in the Science Labs and is open to children in Forms 3 and 4 this term.

Senior Chamber Choir News During the Christmas Term the Senior Chamber Choir recorded two songs which were sent off as our entry for the Barnardo’s National Choral Competition. In compliance with competition rules, all members of the choir had to be aged 12 and under.

We received the very exciting news on Friday that our Chamber Choir has been selected to go through to the final of the Choral Competition taking place at the Royal Festival Hall on March 17.

I am extremely proud of all the members of the Chamber Choir and would like to thank pupils for their dedication and hard work.

Nous avons célébré les Rois Mages!

5M celebrated Epiphany on 6 January. We shared la galette des Rois, the traditional French cake with a little fève, a small china figure, hidden in the cake. The one who finds the fève in his slice is the King of the day!

Saturday Cricket Course at Cranmore School Our exciting Cricket Coaching course will be continuing in January 2017. These weekly sessions will deliver a comprehensive coaching programme throughout the year at Cranmore School. Parents are welcome to watch sessions on the viewing gallery.

Each session will help young players to develop their basic skill levels in batting, bowling and fielding, net practice as well as match play. Specific drills will be used to help a young player develop understanding, skill level and confidence in all areas of Cricket. Most of all, the sessions will be great fun and fantastic for any young player to develop a lifelong love of the game.

These courses will be open to boys and girls from the local schools and cricket clubs.

Rowing is Growing at Cranmore Usually the winter heralds a reduction in the number of rowers... but not this year!

We are regularly getting 2 octuples and a selection of other boats out on the water with our regular 27 members.

We are looking forward to the London Boat Show trip, the South of England Indoor Rowing Championships in Abingdon, not to mention the Weybridge Winter Head Race and the Hyne cup.

Its going to be an exciting half term with much to look forward to.

Calling All 5th & 6th formers – Don’t miss the boat!!

Come and join us for a weekend of adventure on the Tall Ships Challenger sailing around the Solent.

Sailing these yachts is exciting and everyone gets a chance to do everything from taking the helm, filling in the log, hoisting the sails and even working in the galley.

We join the ship on June 23 and return to Portsmouth on June 25.
