9th NOVEMBER 2020
Message from the Headmaster Dear Parents This week the school community came together in remembrance and reflection for those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Our assemblies involved newscasts, mini productions, prayers, poetry and music as part of the commemoration to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives. Some of our younger pupils in Reception designed and produced poppies that were placed throughout the school.
Visiting author, Stewart Foster, engaged the imagination of the pupils and helped generate a greater understanding of some sensitive subjects through his presentation, question time and books. Next week, we are delighted to welcome the prize-winning author, Onjali RaĂşf, to Cranmore as part of Anti-Bullying Week.
Our younger pupils were very creative painting the Houses of Parliament, learning about space and designing Christmas cards. It was wonderful to see the pupils utilising the outdoor spaces at Forest School and being active on the sports fields during lessons.
Mr Everitt
Year 8 delivered a thought-provoking Remembrance Day assembly 8CD’s assembly was a commemoration for those who lost their lives in the Great War 1914-1918 and all subsequent wars in the defence of freedom. Their video performance took the form of a newscast with vignettes from the time to reflect what was happening, who was involved, the impact of war on those left behind, the internment of the Unknown Soldier at Westminster Abbey and the Cenotaph (empty tomb), as a way of remembering the sacrifice of all those who died in the conflict and have no known grave. It finished with the Last Post being played by George (Year 7) and two minute silence.

A virtual author visit from Stewart Foster Stewart Foster, who has written three very successful books (‘The Bubble Boy’, ‘All the Things that could go Wrong’ and ‘Checkmates’) visited Cranmore via Teams on Wednesday this week.
His books are extremely readable and very popular with our pupils, so they were very pleased to be able to ask Stewart many questions about them. Stewart’s books tackle sensitive topics such as bullying, ADHD and OCD in a way which increases our understanding of these subjects and they are very thought-provoking.
As we approach Anti-Bullying Week next week, we asked Stewart to focus on this issue in particular. Pupils were asked to think about why people might be bullied and were encouraged to put a stop to bullying if they see it occurring. Everyone is responsible for stopping it.
It was wonderful to see many of our pupils taking home their signed copies of his books and we hope they will enjoy reading them.
Next week’s virtual author visit from Onjali Raúf We are very much looking forward to a visit from author Onjali Raúf next Wednesday. Her new book, ‘The Night Bus Hero’, is a highly compelling read which deals with the topics of bullying and homelessness. Onjali writes with compassion and humour, making her books a pleasure to read.
Onjali’s first book, ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’, has won many prizes including the 2019 Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and the Blue Peter Book Award, so we are particularly excited to have a virtual visit from Onjali again to talk about her new book.
Learning is fun in Nursery! The children have made Diva lamps using clay to learn about the Festival of Light. Pre-Nursery enjoyed their Music session with Mrs Woods and her song bag. The children have also had great fun in the garden on the slide and playing with water.
Reception learn about Space This week Reception have been learning all about Space. They have learnt the names of the different planets and have explored how each planet is different through art and collage activities. They have also made rockets and enjoyed playing in their Space-themed role play areas. They pretended to fly to Space in a box after reading Jill Murphy's story 'Whatever Next'. Reception are really enjoying this new topic!
Year 1 paint the Houses of Parliament in the style of Monet As part of their Gunpowder Plot topic, Year 1 pupils have been creating their own Monet paintings of the Houses of Parliament. They completed the background on Monday and we are looking forward to seeing the final results!
Marshmallow-toasting fun at Forest School! Year 1 loved toasting marshmallows during their visit to Forest School last week.
Preparations for Christmas cards are underway in Year 2! 2JC loved creating their own Bethlehem scenes using pastels and water colours for their Christmas cards.
Sports Reminders Rain or shine, sports lessons for Year 4 upwards will always take place outside. Pupils must have a change of clothing in school on the days they participate in sport, particularly in periods of adverse weather. Please ensure that the spare clothing is Cranmore sports kit where possible. Pupils in Year 2 upwards should have their shin pads, boots and water bottles with them for their PE and Games lessons. A message from our Chaplain
A reading from the book of Psalms: Sing to the LORD a new song, for He has done marvellous things; His right hand and His Holy arm have worked salvation for Him.

The LORD has made His salvation known and revealed His righteousness to the nations. He has remembered His love and His faithfulness to Israel; All the ends of the earth have seen The salvation of our God. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Reflection This week we pause and reflect on Remembrance Day. We remember all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Let us give thanks for their actions and for all those who work in our Armed Forces. True love is always a gift. Let us this year renew our commitment to peace and think of ways in which we can serve others. May we allow the light of Christ to continue to guide us. Mr Jakubowski
