10 JANUARY 2022 Message from the Headmaster It was a delight to welcome everyone back this week for the start of the new term. We received some exceptional LAMDA results over the holidays. It is a real credit to the pupils who have worked extremely hard in preparation for the exams and in doing so, they developed confidence in the important skill of public speaking. Congratulations to Teddy, Sean and Alexander for qualifying for the bonus round of the National Primary Maths Challenge. Well done to William in Year 5 who was recently involved in the Pianothon and raised a considerable amount for a very worthy charitable cause. In keeping with our broad approach to a well-rounded education, we continue to look for opportunities to invite key educational speakers to Cranmore to enhance the learning environment for our pupils. We are fortunate to have Caroline Penney, a specialist who has worked in child mental health, visiting our school next week. She will be running workshops on anxiety awareness and highlighting strategies that pupils can use in everyday life. We are also excited to welcome climate scientist, Michelle Horsfield, to Cranmore on the 24 th January. She will be speaking to the Senior pupils about current research and the personal responsibility we all hold in protecting the environment for future generations. On Monday we will be holding 11+ and 13+ assessments in the Sports Hall for a large number of external candidates. We will have additional staff in the car park but I would like to apologise in advance if the morning drop off is busier than usual. Have a wonderful weekend.

Mr Everitt

A busy first week back Pupils throughout the school have enjoyed being back in lessons this week, engaging with a variety of activities across the curriculum.

Sports Roundup There were dominant performances against Downsend this week for our U12s and U13s.

The U10s have enjoyed being back in training this week developing their skills in small-sided games.

LAMDA results Congratulations to the following pupils on their recent LAMDA exam results. The pupils have worked very hard and gained a fantastic set of results that they should all be very proud of. Music News

Well done to William in Year 5 who took part in the Pianothon held by Surrey Arts last Saturday. He had a great time and also got to collect his certificate from the Mayor. William raised £215 for the nominated charities: Woking Hospice and Woking Young Musicians’ Trust .

Congratulations to Jake M-H (6MC) who passed his Grade 3 drum exam with Merit.

Nursery The children visited Mrs Thornton for their first Music session and were introduced to some new songs and actions. In our PSHE lesson this week, we focused on reminding the children how they should be washing their hands properly. We talked about why and when and how we need to do this and then participated in a Yoga session with Super Soap Hero. All the children have been continuing to practice their pencil control skills and some children enjoyed listening to the CD of Julia Donaldson’s book ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’ and looking at the storybook. Ms Luke, Head of Nursery

Primary Maths Challenge - Breaking News! Last November, all students in Year 6, and the top and middle sets in Year 5 took part in the first round of the Primary Maths Challenge in which Cranmore students competed against other pupils from all over the UK. This year’s paper was more challenging than the previous year. Gold, silver and bronze certificates were awarded by the Mathematical Association to each student, depending on their score out of 25. Students scoring 20 or above have been invited to take part in the bonus round which will take place the week beginning 2 February. Three of our Year 6 students have been successful in reaching the Bonus Round : Alex G, Sean K and Teddy M. Each student ‘enjoyed the opportunity to stretch their brain and think in different ways’. The Maths Department would like to congratulate all the pupils who took part in this year’s challenge.
