Gloriana was rowed by past members and parents of the school’s rowing club, and the barge was followed in her procession by four boats with 25 current members of the rowing club. More about this on the following pages!

Dear Parents This week we have a wonderful account of our special Gloriana experience. I wish to thank Mr Martin for organising such a memorable occasion. The Golf Day was a great success too. I wish to congratulate our swimmers who performed well in the IAPS National Finals. Our photo competition was a great success and you can see the winning entries here. Form 5 enjoyed their residential visit to Bude whilst Form 6 have had a great week of diverse activities. Our Nursery children have been busy too, you can view the snaps. The Bee Musical was fantastic. Both the singing and dancing were exceptional for such relatively young children. Today we have a busy programme for our Senior Department Sports. Finally, please do buy your tickets for the forthcoming Picnic in the Paddock. Yours sincerely Michael Connolly

A Royal Day on the River To celebrate Cranmore’s 50th and rowing at Cranmore, we were privileged to be allowed to use the Queen’s River Barge, Gloriana, to head a procession of boats up the Walton reach of the Thames. Gloriana was rowed by 18 past pupils of the school who had rowed, plus a few rowing parents and it carried members of the Senior Management team and governors. Following Gloriana were 2 octuples, a quadruple scull and a double scull with 25 current members of the school’s rowing club and taking up the rear was the Walton Lady with 80 parents, brothers, sisters and friends of the school. The procession headed up the river to the Black Swan Sea Scouts base where the crews in their regatta lined the bank to cheer us. Gloriana responded by tossing oars in salute. Continuing our progress under Walton Bridge we stopped at Cowey Sale and the riverside home of Margaret Lock (Mr Fish’s grandmother) and again tossed oars to salute her. She is the first lady vice–president of Walton Rowing Club and together with her late husband did so much to support junior rowing at Walton and for Cranmore. It seemed very appropriate that one of our crews was rowing the octuple ‘Jack Lock’, named after her husband. Turning behind Desborough Island, we then made our stately progress back to Walton Rowing Club where, after photos and tours of the barge, tea was served. A truly memorable day for all those involved. Mr B Martin

On Tuesday, the children in Lower Prep, Middle Prep and Upper Prep put on two wonderful performances of ‘The Bee Musical’. The children performed with confidence and flair, demonstrating their talents in singing, dancing and acting. We are proud of all the children and staff, who have worked hard together to put on the show. We all know so much more about how we can help protect bees now.

We collected a variety of plants on the way to Forest School.

Adding special ingredients to our delicious potion in the cauldron. As we stirred we cast our magic spell.

Junior Music It has been another busy week in the Junior Department. Not only did we put on two wonderful performances of the Bee Musical, but some children in the Junior Department also performed in our final Music Assembly of the year. We heard pupils play the piano, violin and French horn. I am extremely proud of these pupils and I would like to thank Mrs Herbert, Mrs Geddes and Mr Brewer for preparing these pupils for their performance. A huge thank you to the parents as well for supporting your children on the day. Miss I Fourie

Talented Young Writers Pupils in Cranmore’s Senior Department have been celebrating success in the Rotary Club’s Young Writer Competition, with a visit from a former chairman of Bookham and Horsley Rotary Club, Ian Taylor. Mr Taylor attended a recent assembly to present a range of awards and prizes. More than fifty children entered the local round of the Competition. In the Third Form, Hugo came runner-up with his poem inspired by the theme ‘A Different Perspective’ while Cameron and Adrian were commended for their entries. They are pictured below. Fifth Former Jai was given a Highly Commended award. The judges’ feedback praised the children both for their ideas and for the quality of their writing. As Mr Taylor explained, Hugo went on to win the District round of the Competition and recently attended a Rotary dinner with his family to receive his award. Even more impressively, he has gone on to achieve third place in the National Competition, competing against children from across the UK and Ireland. Congratulations to Hugo, Jai, Cameron and Adrian and thank you to all those children who entered the Competition. It was our first attempt at it and we shall return next year!

Form 2 Ramble On Wednesday 6th June, Form 2 walked 8 miles across the Surrey Hills in wonderful sunshine. The pupils and their teachers, along with several parents, were dropped by minibus near Chilworth. We walked along paths and crossed the River Tillingbourne before tackling the steep ascent to St Martha’s church where we stopped for a well-earned break. After this, we continued our ramble to Newlands Corner where we were rewarded with distant views of the South Downs. It was here that we ate our picnic and there was just time to buy an ice cream before tackling the final stretch of our journey – the 4 miles back to school along the top of the North Downs. My thanks go to the parents that joined us and to Mr Hinds and Mr Morgan for helping make it a happy day out for Form 2. Mr Chapman

Fifth Form Trip to Bude On Monday 4th June the Fifth Form headed off to Bude, Cornwall for 3 days of fun-packed activities which included body-boarding, surfing, canoeing, caving and mountain-boarding. The year group also enjoyed the early morning swim or run which was a great way to start the day. I was really impressed with the way they picked up new skills so quickly. Mr O’Neill

Cranmore Golf Day On Sunday 10th June, The Drift Golf Club hosted the 3rd annual Cranmore Golf Day. We welcomed many people, from all parts of the Cranmore community: parents, pupils, grandparents, cousins, past and present staff. On the day, 29 pupils and 45 adults played and we welcomed over 100 for tea and prizes at the end. In our 50th anniversary year, a terrific turn out! Well done to the past and present staff team for winning the 18 hole match, and to the Ellis family for winning the 9 hole match and also the raffle prize. A huge thanks to Sam and Phil at The Drift GC for their amazing help, organisation and support not only of the day, but of the Cranmore Golf Programme. From my part, a huge thanks for all the wonderful parents who have supported the day and the Golf programme, over the past 3 years! Mr O’Brien

Our Book Collection for Delight Charity I’m sure you remember that for World Book Day this year we decided to donate our nearly-new books to a charity called Delight, which aims to give books to children who do not own any books of their own. We had a fantastic response to this from pupils and parents, and when all the books were collected up and sent to the charity, they counted an amazing 1,628 books from Cranmore School. You should be proud of yourselves, you are going to make a lot of children very happy. THANK YOU! Forthcoming Book Group Meetings at Cranmore Our new Breakfast Book Club is for pupils currently in the 2nd and 3rd forms, and their parents if they are able to come along. We had our first meeting before half term when we chose our first book, Time Travelling with a Hamster by Ross Welford (winning title of the Awesome Book Awards 2017). All are welcome to join, so please contact Mrs Trumble if you would like to come to the meeting for this half of term, which will be at 8 / 8.15 on Monday 5th June in the Senior Library. Our Mums’ Book Group meets two or three times a term, usually over coffee at 8.30am in the library. Our current book is Black Water Lilies by Michel Bussi and we will meet to talk about it next Monday, 18th June at 8.30. Do come along - don’t worry if you haven’t read the book! - and meet us in the Senior Library. We are always pleased to welcome new members and we do have evenings out from time to time—it’s not always early mornings! Sue Trumble
