15th MARCH 2021
Message from the Headmaster Dear Parents, We have had another exceptional week at Cranmore with pupils participating in an abundance of exciting events and activities. I would like to congratulate the Year 6 pupils who took part in the Rotary Young Writer Competition; they received glowing praise from the judges and their work was highly commended. It is hugely encouraging to see our pupils using the school facilities each week, in particular the Year 3 and 4 children involved in hockey, the Year 5 girls playing touch rugby and the Year 7 and 8 pupils immersed in cricket and tennis. We are also delighted to have strengthened our relationship with the Chelsea Foundation. They have launched a new predevelopment centre at Cranmore to give children an opportunity to extend their love of football.
Pupils in the Upper Prep School are invited to take part in the exciting Reading Challenge to complete five books chosen by the English Department before the 7th of June. Good luck to all the pupils involved. Year 2 have been learning about Kenya, a country I managed to visit a number of years ago, and I was very interested to see the detailed clothing and intricate necklaces designed by the pupils. On Wednesday, I was happy to be joined by Miss Gallop and a number of pupils wearing some green items of clothing for St Patrick’s Day. I explained to the pupils that although the Patron Saint of Ireland was originally from England, there will be the usual rivalry between the two sides when they face each other in the rugby Six Nations this weekend! Have a lovely weekend. Mr Everitt
Cranmore success in Rotary Young Writer Competition! Congratulations to Teddy (5SJ), Daniel (6EF), Alex (6MC) and Matthew (6RC) who have all been awarded Highly Commended Certificates in this year’s Rotary Young Writer Competition. Double the number of pupils from schools across the Bookham and Horsley area entered in 2020, making it more competitive than ever before. The judges praised the high quality of entries from Cranmore. I would like to thank everyone who participated and who took time to write about 'My Happiest Day’, which was the subject of this year’s competition. Mr Chapman, English, Head of Year 6

Exciting Cranmore Reading Challenge, Years 4, 5 and 6!
The deadline for pupils to complete the Cranmore Reading Challenge has been extended. Pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6 now have until Monday 7th June to read the five nominated books. It's not too late to take part. Pupils can request copies of the books from their English teacher.
Children will receive 5 merits for each book completed. At the end of the challenge, they will receive a Bronze certificate for reading three books, a Silver certificate for reading four books and a Gold certificate plus a supermerit for reading all five books. The children who have read all five books will be asked to vote for their favourite book. We are very excited about this challenge. Well done to those pupils who have already read all five books. We look forward to discovering which book will be our pupils' favourite. Mrs Spooner, Upper Prep English teacher

Scientists in Reception Reception had lots of fun being scientists for Science Week. We talked about all the wonderful inventions that science has helped us with over the years and how they could be the scientists and inventors of the future! The children learnt that scientists begin by asking a question in order to discover something new. We asked the questions, "Which objects will float and which will sink?" "Which items are magnetic?" and "What do plants need to grow?" The children then carried out investigations to help answer those questions. They also enjoyed looking in Scientific Non-Fiction books to discover interesting scientific facts.

Reminder - The Great Cranmore Bake Off!
I am very excited to tell you all about a forthcoming whole-school fundraising event... The Great Cranmore Bake Off! This suggestion came from our School Council and we are inviting all pupils and staff in our Cranmore community to take part. We would like everyone to get out their mixing bowls and create an Easter themed show-stopping bake. This could be a cake, cupcakes, traybake or biscuits - anything goes. We are asking all entrants to donate £2 to the Catholic Children's Society https://www.cathchild.org.uk/. Here is a link to the Just Giving page https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/tgcbo

A Message from our Chaplain A reading from the Gospel of John For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. The Gospel of the Lord Praise to You Lord Jesus Christ
Lent This week we hear one of the most famous of all Gospel passages; For God so loved the world that He sent His only Begotten Son. St Augustine says that God loves us as though there was only one of us. To love is always an act of giving, an act of kindness. They say there are 4 types of love and the greatest type of love is known as Agape- the unconditional love that asks for nothing in return. Another great quote from St Augustine is that God is only capable of loving us. As we continue our Lenten journey may we continue to grow in love and to ask for forgiveness when we fail to do this.

May I thank Marco DL in 7JH who, as part of his Chaplaincy Team role, has written our thoughtful “Prayer on Lent." Mr Jakubowski, Chaplain Prayer on Lent written by Marco DL, 7JH Heavenly Father, Creator of all things, we pray for Your great mercy, that You will guide us towards You, for we cannot find our way without You. Guide us to do what You require of us, for we cannot do it alone. Make our minds strong to serve You as You would wish. Strengthen us against the temptations of Satan, knowing that Your Son was tempted in the desert, and remove from us all that is evil, shielding us against our enemies. Teach us so that we may love You before all things with a pure heart and mind. For You are our Father, our help, and our hope. In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen
