13 JUNE 2022 Message from the Headmaster

At the end of last week, Year 7 and 8 pupils across the Trust had the opportunity to get together and enjoy the colour run organised by FOST and the CPA at St Teresa’s. The start of this week presented another opportunity for them to meet again at the St Teresa’s Enrichment Society lecture on Genetic Disease and Gene therapy. Year 7 enjoyed a more active Spanish lesson by taking part in a practical salsa dancing workshop with a professional dancer who put them through their paces, delivering the majority of the session in Spanish. The assembly by RLP on Wednesday was wonderful and focused on the process of growing up, with the children expressing what they have learned throughout this year. Equally inspiring were the musical pieces played by pupils as part of the year group finals in our annual Young Musician competition. We are looking forward to the grand final next week. In sport, the 1st XI cricket team progressed through to the Surrey Cup semi-final with victory over Feltonfleet. A memorable highlight was the superb innings from Adam who scored 113 not out. The team followed this impressive run of form with another victory over Whitgift School. We are delighted that our athletics team enjoyed a myriad of successes at the West Surrey Athletics meeting. Both Moby and Max made it through to the national final in long jump event which is due to be held on Monday 4th July.

On Sunday, we are delighted to host our Cranmore Canter which once again will be sponsored by Porsche. It promises to be a fun morning for runners, joggers and walkers around the 1.5km and 3km courses. Supporters are also very welcome and I look forward to seeing many pupils, their families and Cranmore staff on the morning.

Year 6 Trip to Arundel Castle

After a short journey from school we arrived at Arundel Caste in West Sussex. The castle looked magnificent and everybody was excited. Firstly, my group walked up a steep path which led to the castle entrance where we met our castle tour guide. On the way the guide told us that there used to be a moat (a long path filled with water surrounding a castle) exactly where we were standing. That was interesting as we had learnt about moats in our history lessons and how they were the defenses against the opposition. We entered the castle and there were lots and lots of ancient items and objects such as a knight's costume and some chainmail armor which was hanging on the wall. We went into a room with replicas of old costumes which the English army used to wear around 600-1000 years ago, and some people got told to try on some of the costumes. After this we visited the keep, which was located on top of a huge hill. On the way we went up a curly, spiral staircase which led to a peculiar-looking room which used to belong to a contender of the throne. It was a tiny room with a small bed and a few candles with a wafer-thin window. The keep was quite high up and the views from the top were outstanding. There was a flag which I believe was meant to represent that the Duke was here. Later, my group had lunch and we had some time to get fresh air because it was a very hot day. Eventually we finished eating and went to a gigantic garden filled with ponds and plants and majestic sights. There was one pond which seemed normal until a turtle rose to the top, it was funny to watch. We walked past an old dungeon which was used to throw prisoners into, and they were starved to death. There were bushes which had been trimmed perfectly. Unfortunately, we had run out of time, and we had to get back on the bus. This was a very beautiful, peaceful and majestic school trip. Year 6 Trip to Arundel Castle

After around an hour or so on the coach, I caught my first glimpse of Arundel Castle, a beautiful example of Norman architecture, originally featuring a motte and wooden bailey, and completed on Christmas Day 1067, a year and 3 months after the Battle of Hastings! I must say it was pretty impressive and I’ve seen the Norman castles of Guildford and Oxford!

Mr. Cross led us to the portcullis (the large metal gates protecting the castle from enemy soldiers) where we met our friendly guide Georgina who wore a necklace with a Lion emblem. She was amazing and in three and half hours helped my group of Year 6 explore the castle and its grounds. Firstly, there was the oubliette (a sort of dungeon covered by a trap door where a little girl’s shoe remains to this day!) and then the beautifully manicured water gardens where we met Thomas a big, shy, green and yellow terrapin!

Then we had a look around the Barons’ Hall where assemblies, meetings and great feasts once took place. After that, we nervously climbed lots of narrow stone staircases leading to the castle’s keep where traditionally royalty lived or stayed when visiting. Finally, we found ourselves in the Room of Re-enactment where were able to touch and feel real chain mail before grabbing wooden shields and recreating the Battle of Hastings which took place in October 1066.

An awesome history trip!

Year 3 Trip to the Chocolate Museum This Wednesday Year 3 visited the Chocolate museum in Brixton as part of their topic about the Aztecs. They learnt about how the Mayans and Aztecs used chocolate, where chocolate comes from and how it is made. They tasted some different types of chocolate – even a chilli one! They designed a chocolate wrapper using Aztec symbols to name their chocolate bar. Then they were given the chance to grind their own cacao beans and make their own Aztec style chocolate bar by adding honey to the grinds and pressing into a mould.

Music News

Congratulations to Louis L (8MH) who was awarded a Distinction for his wonderful flute playing of a Grade 5 piece, 'Intermezzo' by Mascagni during assembly. Our wonderful flute teacher, Mrs Millar, has spaces available in her timetable for any children who may wish to start learning this lovely instrument. Parents should initially contact Mr Harris in order to arrange a taster session.

Nursery News Across the Nursery this week our topic has been mini beasts. The Pre-Nursery children had fun engaging in some big art, creating a caterpillar using their feet which was extremely messy and great fun! They also participated in potato painting to create their very own ‘Hungry Caterpillar’, and used the interactive whiteboard program to produce a butterfly. At Forest School, the children enjoyed making rainbow toast and used their senses when playing with the lavender and lemon-scented playdough. They had lots of fun balancing on the slack lines, climbing in the trees and swinging in the hammock! Ms Luke, Head of Nursery

This Week’s House Cup Winners

Congratulations to Borelli House in the Lower Prep and Tylor House in the Upper Prep and Seniors for gaining the highest number of merits this week!

Sports Roundup

There has been an incredible amount of sport taking place over the last week with many successes. One highlight was the IAPS Swimming Finals which took place on Saturday at the London Aquatic Centre. It was an amazing event in an iconic venue. Every swimmer swam faster than their qualifying time, which is a superb effort. Three Cranmore swimmers achieved top 10 finishes which puts them in the category of some of the best swimmers in the country for their respective age brackets.

Jensen W came 4th in the 50 fly, Henry C came 6th in the 25m and Max G came 9th in the 25m breaststroke. The U10 medley relay just missed out on a medal finishing 4th. All Relay teams set personal best times. The U12 relay team swam exceptionally well with a change in personnel and a change in strokes swum. There were great swims from Jack P swimming up an age group in the relays. Overall, Cranmore came 14th out of over 500+ schools. We are incredibly proud of every swimmer, and it was certainly a phenomenal team effort. The support for each other was superb. Thank you to Jensen W for being an excellent captain with the younger swimmers, providing great encouragement and direction.

Good luck to our U11s Relay team who are competing in the English Schools National Relay Finals this weekend at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.

There were more highlights regarding our cricket. Adam H scored 113 not out to help secure a great team win over Feltonfleet. This result means that Cranmore are now through to the Surrey Cup semi-final which will be against Downsend. This performance was backed up with an outstanding win over Whitgift School on Saturday. Jayden F scored 47 not out and had an effective partnership with Daniel D which meant Cranmore scored 129-6 to 125-6 with an over to spare. Our U11s are also through to the Surrey Cup semi-final with a comprehensive win over RGS Prep. Matches also took place against Homefield, Cranleigh, Parkside, Edgeborough and Donhead.

We hosted another golf fixture on our golf course on Tuesday. Some close matches saw Cranmore just pip Parkside in a great evening of golf.

Sports Roundup

There have been two athletic meets this week, Donhead and the West Surreys at the Guildford Spectrum. There were some excellent performances with many podium finishes. At least two boys qualified from the Regionals for the Nationals, Birmingham.

Our Scholarship and Performance session saw the introduction of football to get ready for next term. Individual skill development and 2 v 2s was the focus.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

Corpus Christi

Thought for the week: What strengthens you? We pray together... Dear Lord Jesus, You made the ultimate sacrifice so that You could wash away the sins of the whole world. You have left us the great gift of your body and blood through the Holy Eucharist. We thank you and praise you every day for your sacrifice offered on Calvary, in which you gave divine justice and love for all of us sinners. Amen. REFLECTION This week marks the Feast of Corpus Christi, which is also known as the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. In this jubilant festival, we proclaim the truth of the transubstantiation of bread and wine into the actual body of Christ during Mass.

Let us Pray:

Our Father Hail Mary 1 minute silence

“We need this bread to grow in love, the necessary means for us to recognize the face of Christ in the faces of our brothers and sisters.”

In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
