15 NOVEMBER 2021 Message from the Headmaster We started the week with Odd Socks Day and assemblies to raise awareness of anti-bullying week. The theme of ‘One kind word’ was revisited throughout the week during PSHE sessions. Inspired by author Onjali Rauf’s visit, kindness was also evident in Year 4 pupils’ posters encouraging donations to food banks which are an essential resource for some households. Our Friday assembly focused on unconscious bias and was an opportunity to remind pupils that we should all take more time to reflect before making judgments about others. Last Saturday morning’s fixtures for Year 5 and 6 were their first opportunity to play rugby this term and they had some impressive results. On Sunday, our skiers competed in the Surrey Championships winning gold at U9 and U11 and bronze at U14. We had further success last week in cross country with Oliver in Year 8 placed in the top 4 runners and securing his place to represent Guildford and Waverley district in the Surrey Schools Cross Country competition in January. Year 3 played their first tag rugby matches of the term showing lots of enthusiasm resulting in some great victories. The pupils should be exceptionally proud of their accomplishments. A special congratulations to the Year 8 musical trio of Ronan, Louis and Kamran. They have been recognised and rewarded for their extraordinary singing talents by being selected for the National Youth Choir. Further congratulations to our new Lower Prep School Council representatives who met with Miss Gallop this week. I look forward to hearing their suggestions and new ideas. Thank you to the CPA and FOST for arranging the Senior School neon themed disco. It was an incredibly well organised event and a real highlight for the pupils. We are also very grateful to families for their generous donations to the Shoebox Appeal; the Christmas gifts will bring joy and be greatly appreciated by children who are less fortunate.
Mr Everitt
Year 4 learn about Food Poverty Over the last few weeks, Year 4 pupils have been learning about Food Poverty in the UK: what foodbanks are and their role in our local community, the factors contributing to the need for foodbanks and how local foodbanks can be supported. They have enjoyed designing eye-catching posters to encourage people to donate to local foodbanks. The best designs will be awarded prizes but, even more importantly, will be placed around the school to raise awareness. Between 18 to 20 November, large Tesco stores will be encouraging customers to donate something from a list of items that the local food bank needs the most, especially during the Christmas period. As well as donating at supermarkets, there are foodbanks in Dorking and Cobham.
Music News Congratulations to three of our Year 8 pupils Kamran , Louis and Ronan , who have both been invited to join the National Youth Boys’ Choir after successful auditions. Well done! Mr Harris, Director of Music
Greek Choral work for Year 7 In Drama, Year 7 have worked on Greek Chorus work, experimenting with choral movement. They used simple ideas to create effective moods and atmospheres. The pupils were extremely focused and produced some excellent pieces. Mrs Hanson, Head of Drama
Nursery News The Pre-Nursery children went on an autumn walk searching for autumn treasures for their collages this week. In Nursery, the topic book is ‘Be Brave Little Penguin’. The children enjoyed exploring the frozen artic animals. We have also enjoyed identifying numerals to 10 and counting out the corresponding amount of items in Numeracy this week. Ms Luke, Head of Nursery
Showing support for Anti-bullying Week
As part of Anti- Bullying week, pupils and staff wore Odd Socks to celebrate how unique we all are. The Theme for this year was ‘One Kind Word’. Mr O’Neill, Head of PSHE
Senior School Disco Last Friday, Year 7 and 8 pupils from Cranmore and St Teresa’s donned their neon outfits for the inaugural CPA/FOST Senior Disco. The event kicked off with an introductory salsa lesson to get everyone moving and then the disco music took over. There was a photo booth and sweet stall that added some extra entertainment as well as pizza and cookies to re-energise the spirited dancers. A great time was had by all and our thanks go to the members of the CPA and FOST for jointly organising an amazing event. Another thanks must go to the Facilities and Catering teams and the Year 7 and 8 staff from both schools who were spotted dancing throughout the night Mr Hinds, Head of Year 8
Sports Roundup
Last week we had ex-Currie Cup rugby player and Cranmore parent Armand Roux visit the school to lead a specialist scrummaging session for our Year 7 and 8 pupils. The Cross Country squad was in action at Charterhouse with our Year 7 and 8 competing. Oliver Wheatley came 4th in his race, which was in the Year 9/U14s bracket which gave him the position of 1st in his own age category. This means he qualifies for the Surrey finals in Reigate in January. Our U13s Squash Squad had a very successful Friday afternoon against City of London Freemans, with our U11s also competing very well. The U10s and U11s had their first rugby matches against Cranleigh resulting in only two losses out of seven matches. Our ski squad had a superb day of skiing on Sunday with the U9s and U11s finishing 1st at the Surrey Schools Ski Championships. The U13s finished 3rd in the U14s age category. Mr Hodgson, Director of Sport
Skiing in the Surrey Championships Last Sunday, the Cranmore ski squad were back at Aldershot for the Surrey Championships. This has a slightly different format to other competitions as it’s run under the primary and secondary school age groups. It was another day of hard racing with a chance for the younger skiers to race as U9. They took their opportunity and were clear winners, posting a time that would have seen them placed 4th in the U11 category. As for the U11, they again showed the same level of skill that had earned them silver at the nationals to win their category by 10 seconds. In the afternoon it was a chance for the older boys to race on long gates, something which is very new to some of them. There was some very strong opposition and the age grouping allowed Year 9 boys to enter the U14 category. Both teams did very well with 3rd place for the A squad and 5th for the B squad. The skiers also had the chance to race in a mixed ability dual slalom which was both fun and exciting for all the competitors. Once again, a big thank you to all the parents for supporting the events and to Mr Davey who was there from start to finish guiding and encouraging our skiers. Mr Mellstrom, Head of Skiing
Children in Distress Shoebox Appeal Thank you to everyone who contributed shoeboxes for our Children in Distress appeal. They were gratefully received by our governor, Mr Michael Agius.
