Ben A-B secures a bronze medal in Italy

Dear Parents

This edition has several photos from the recent Come & See sessions which I know are always great fun for parents. As ever, we have exciting news on the sports front which highlights some outstanding individual performances. We welcomed two veterans from WWII who kindly gave a short presentation on their wartime experiences to the children followed by a lively Q & A. It is rather poignant to consider that the time when we shall no longer be able to hear such powerful first-hand testimony is not far away. We have a busy morning scheduled for tomorrow, not only with Open Morning but a programme of sports too.

We are very much looking forward to next Friday when we shall celebrate World Book Day. Yours sincerely Michael Connolly

A sprint finish at Highfield Cross Country event

Sports Focus The week before half term saw the start of the hockey season here at Cranmore, with House matches taking place across all senior years. The change of sport has seen renewed energy and excitement from the children as they work hard to develop their hockey skills. This time of year is also rugby 7s season and Cranmore U11s and U13s entered their first two tournaments at St John's Beaumont. Both teams enjoyed their first outing whilst developing their rugby 7s game understanding, with the U13s having a very successful festival - see SOCS for reports. Thank you to all parents who supported on both days, Cranmore certainly had the best attendance! Our U9 to U12 cross-country team competed at the Highfield School event on the last day of halfterm. History was made with the first ever girl - Cรกitlin W. - to represent the Cranmore Cross Country team, finishing strongly in the U9 race. The annual rowing Hyne Cup between Walton and Weybridge Rowing Clubs took place on Sunday involving Cranmore students. It was a great effort in the sunshine with fantastic support along the riverbank for our crews which helped in a convincing win over Weybridge. Sixth Form pupil Ben A-B had a fantastic ski performance at the English Alpine Championships in Italy during the half-term. Ben took third place in the U14 Super G competition, in a field of 50+ made up of the very best young British skiers. Fifth form pupil Brayden Jose has been competing in the Surrey County Swimming Championships over the last three weekends. He swam three different strokes, in several different races whilst achieving a number of personal bests. After all the events he is ranked 3rd overall in the county at U13 level. This week sees the first of our hockey matches taking place with a whole year group fixture for our U9s against Hoe Bridge School and our U13s playing away against Danes Hill.

Events Rugby: London Irish vs Ealing, Madejski Stadium - Saturday 27th April (pm). Cranmore pupils to perform guard of honour pre-match. Children will attend free of charge and coaches will be provided from Cranmore to the Madejski Stadium The Cranmore Canter, Cranmore School - Sunday 30th June (am)

Cranmore Live It was a real thrill to welcome the National Youth Jazz Orchestra to Cranmore for this year’s Cranmore Live. Their four jazz ambassadors led by jazz pianist, Pete Letanka, worked with over 100 junior and senior pupils during numerous workshops. The creative focus of each session was to learn about the art of improvisation. Playing without music can be a frightening prospect for even the most advanced musician, yet all the pupils rose to the challenge and some were very surprised at how good they actually were! The evening concert featured the workshop pupils at the very outset and then we all sat back in our seats and marvelled at the amazing sounds of the 23 piece NYJO big band.

This concert was a real treat for all jazz fans and the programme reflected the special day, Valentine’s Day, with classics such as ‘Love for Sale’ and ‘Our Love is Here to Stay’. It was very satisfying to see so many people, young and old, enjoying the buzz of live music.

Information Book Swap for Second Form Monday 4th to Friday 8th March in Senior Library

In celebration of World Book Day, we are holding a book swap for the Second Form. Participation is optional. Pupils may bring in up to two books which they have enjoyed but no longer need to keep on their bookshelves. They should be standard-sized paperbacks (no comics, ÂŁ1 World Book Day books etc.). They may bring them in between Monday 4th and Wednesday 6th March to the Senior Library. They may then come and choose a book from those donated on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th March during break times.
