1st FEBRUARY 2021

Message from the Headmaster Dear Parents, The focus on Children’s Mental Health Week included a wide range of activities for children in all year groups. Our Chronicle displays the many innovative ways that pupils managed to share their ideas, thoughts and find a way to relax during this busy period such as the use of creative arts, physical activity and taking time to enjoy a hot chocolate. This week, I particularly enjoyed viewing the work and creativity of Year 1 pupils designing model farms, Year 2 pupils who researched Amelia Earhart and plane design and the incredible pointillism artwork from our talented Year 3 pupils.

In science, Year 5 were able to watch a live demonstration of the circulatory system including the heart and lungs; it certainly was not for the squeamish. In Art, Year 7 pupils spent time mastering some fine art paper engineering which was inspired by the Bauhaus movement. Finally, I would like to bring to the attention of all pupils that the Distance and Staircase Challenges, organised by the Sports Department, are swiftly moving towards the finishing line and summit! There are only a few days left to register your efforts so keep up the good work and I look forward to announcing the results in next week’s assembly. Have a lovely weekend. Mr Everitt

Awesome Art by Year 7!

Year 7 have been mastering the fine art of Paper Engineering, inspired by the Bauhaus movement. They have learnt how to form a pop-up, creating pleats and the difference between the essential folds in origami. They spent this week carefully photographing their work to capture the architectural forms these create. I am so proud of Year 7 – they seem to be really enjoying this part of their project! Year 5 Science “Take Heart– it doesn't miss a beat!” Year 5 scientists have enjoyed learning about the heart and circulatory system this term and these pupils are not squeamish! We have enjoyed live heart and lungs demonstrations over Teams – identifying where these organs fit in our bodies, learning the names of the blood vessels, describing how we produce energy in our muscles and investigating how exercise affects our heart rate. What a fit group of children 5SJ are (see graph)!

What has been most encouraging is the inspiration pupils have found through their reading – Adam Kay’s entertaining anatomy book for older children, Kay’s Anatomy, has been a popular recommendation by our Year 5s. Please do review the content before giving to your child, as whilst entertaining, Kay has a professional medical background, so his book covers all aspects of human life processes. Dr Verny White, Teacher of Chemistry and Science Pupil quotes on the heart and their learning •

Elliott B, 5SJ: “Seeing a real heart and lungs helped me learn…….. that a heart is actually pretty big to fit inside your body” and “It keeps beating and never stops until you die.”

Amelie W, 5TH: “Your heart is fantastic because……it keeps you alive by pumping blood around the body”

Maya W, 5TH: “Seeing a real heart and lungs helped me learn what it looked like in real life and the functions of a heart and lungs.”

Solomon M-H, 5TH: “Your heart is fantastic because…… it does so many different jobs in a short moment of time over the life span of a person’s whole life, without needing a rest.”

Gabriel C, 5TH: “Seeing a real heart and lungs helped me learn where the veins, arteries and capillaries lead to.”

Pupil book reviews on Kay’s Anatomy Ollie C, 5CC: I am currently reading Kay's Anatomy by Adam Kay. I am really enjoying it because it's funny but also really informative. There are also lots of really great cartoon illustrations that help explain everything in a simple and eye-catching way. I have been able to answer quite a few questions in class and in my workbook from what I have read in the book so I would say it is perfect to read whilst studying the human body at school.

Elliott B, 5TH: Kay's Anatomy by Adam Kay … is so funny but it also teaches you tons and tons of things. Rowan G, 5TH: Kay’s anatomy by Adam Kay is very good because it’s a funny way of learning science.

The theme for this year’s Children’s Mental Health Week was ‘Express Yourself’ Cranmore marked the week by incorporating a range of activities throughout the school day encouraging pupils to explore the different ways they could express themselves, and the creative ways that they could share their feelings, their thoughts and their ideas: •

Lower Prep assembly focused on celebrating the children’s creative achievements during the week, including Pointillism art work from Year 3 and acts of kindness.

Years 1 and 2 have been enjoying experiencing different techniques to help them relax and express themselves through their after school Mindfulness Club sessions. So far they have tried songs, meditation, yoga, dances and even building Lego models.

In Drama, pupils have been performing monologues, expressing their characters' thoughts and feelings, shown through facial expressions, posture and tone of voice and exploring contemporary, physical theatre, looking at how movement conveys emotions.

In Art, pupils have studied “What would Hundertwasser do?”, collage and origami/kirigami. Art “Pieces of the Week” from Years 5 and 6 are shown below.

In Music, pupils have worked on a piece of the week describing How do you feel? In addition to this, the theme of the House Music Competition is Compassion and in the Year 6 Music Appreciation Club, emotion in music is often discussed. Examples are Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy by Tchaikovsky https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=sdduPpnqre4 and Mars from the Planets Suite by Holst https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jmk5frp6-3Q

In RE: Prayer with Taize and Lectio Divina

In French, Mindfulness can be found here https://youtu.be/CWRAe2b_ZhI

In Form time, pupils have enjoyed a range of activities, for example, acts of kindness and what children do to relax; daily quiz page and sharing creative activities; 'Tense & Release relaxation; A to Z of Mindfulness; the Express Yourself message from the Duchess of Cambridge; ideas on how to express ourselves: singing, music, drama, art, photography; an I Am Amazing worksheet; the 'squiggle game' and 'draw how you feel' Art activities.

A Message from our Chaplain A reading from the Gospel of Mark Glory to You Oh Lord As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon Peter and Andrew. Simon Peter’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.

The Gospel of the Lord Praise to You Lord Jesus Christ

Healing This week we hear about how Jesus healed Simon Peter's Mother in Law. Jesus enters the world and enters our world to bring healing to us. Jesus enters the lives of ordinary people. Jesus brings wholeness and mental wellbeing. He brings physical and Spiritual Healing. Let us be like Simon Peter and ask Jesus for help. In this week where we think about Mental wellbeing let us place any of our worries into His hands. Lourdes in France is a place of healing, prayer and wellbeing. People go there to be renewed both physically and spiritually.
