2nd NOVEMBER 2020
Message from the Headmaster Dear Parents It was wonderful to welcome everyone back to Cranmore this week. The pupils were clearly excited to meet their friends again and have been exemplary in their attitude to learning in the classroom. We have adapted quickly to the ever-changing guidance and I would like to thank all parents and staff for adjusting so well to the new routine. This week’s Chronicle shows how busy the school has been with Guy Fawkes celebrations, and Pirate and Vikingthemed lessons. I hope you will enjoy the images from our recent Action Day event where pupils in the Upper Prep and Senior School had an opportunity to perform their many talents to their year group. During this half of the term, we launch our Cranmore Reading Challenge in which pupils are invited to read five newly-released books and vote for their favourite. In the coming weeks, we will have virtual visits from two authors: best-selling Onjali Raúf to talk about her latest book ‘The Night Bus Hero’, a thoughtful and compassionately written story, and award-winning Stewart Foster, whose book ‘All Things That Could Go Wrong’ tells the story of different characters discovering what connects us all. On 16th November, we will mark Odd Socks Day to celebrate what makes us all unique.
Mr Everitt
Virtual Action Day Virtual Action Day was great fun this year and was enjoyed by all Upper Prep and Senior pupils. Held in form rooms, the children performed to their class and their performances were streamed to the classrooms of the rest of their year group. From musicians to magicians and actors to dancers, a fabulous array of talent was on show. Charity donations can still be made via the following Just Giving page. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/stephen-jakubowski Thank you for your generosity.
Upper Prep and Senior pupils develop their observational skills in Art lessons Year 6 pupils have been working on their observational drawing skills and learning to draw with a continuous line to record natural structures. They are working on compositional understanding to appreciate their awareness of positive and negative space. Year 8 have been building confidence in drawing by undertaking lots of drawing challenges, focusing on 'breakfast time' products. This has involved using a continuous line drawing with their opposite hand and even attempting to record in time-limited constraints such as only 10 seconds!
Announcing the Cranmore Reading Challenge Who is it for? All pupils in Years 4 to 6 are invited to sign up, but the challenge is optional. Pupils can read these books as their school library book. Copies of the books are available to borrow from our school library. What does it involve? Pupils will read five carefully selected books, all of which have been published in 2020. This year's books are: High Rise Mystery by Sharna Jackson
The Night Bus Hero by Onjali Rauf The Castle of Tangled Magic by Sophie Anderson The Highland Falcon Thief by M.G. Leonard and Sam Sedgman The Girl who Stole an Elephant by Nizrana Farook How long is the challenge running? Children will have until the end of the Easter holidays (Monday 19th April 2021) to read the books.
What are the benefits of taking part? Children will receive five merits for each book completed. At the end of the challenge, they will receive a Bronze certificate for three books read, a Silver certificate for four books read and a Gold certificate for five books read. Those children who have read all five books will be able to vote for their favourite book. In addition, children will receive a Supermerit if they manage to read all five books. We are very excited about the challenge and look forward to discovering which book will be our pupils' favourite.
Next week’s virtual author visit with Stewart Foster for Anti-Bullying Week We are very excited about our virtual author visit which is taking place on Wednesday 11th November. Author Stewart Foster has been busy signing books for pupils who have ordered them and will deliver a talk as well as question and answer sessions next week to Years 4 to 8.
We are delighted to see that Stewart signed the books at his local bookshop as independent bookshops will need our support more than ever over the coming weeks.

Nursery children celebrate Guy Fawkes Night The Nursery children have been engaged in activities around Guy Fawkes Night. They went on a walk to collect sticks to make their bonfire pictures. In Science the children looked at the concept of wind, predicting how far objects could fly.
Pirate fun in Year 1 To mark the end of their Pirates topic, Year 1 enjoyed a pirate afternoon. They wore pirate hats, found treasure and played lots of pirate games.
Year 2 use VR headsets to visit castles Year 2 loved their ‘fabulous finisher’ to their topic on castles and visited the following castles virtually using the virtual headsets: Conwy Castle in Wales; a château in France; the inside of Warwick Castle; the castle walls of Edinburgh Castle; Budapest Palace in Hungary. They loved exploring them and talking about what they could see and how it made them feel. It was a great way to celebrate the end of our exciting half term of learning about Castles in Year 2!
Year 2’s beautiful work on dragons 2RF created the dragon as a class and the children then designed their own dragons and described them using rhyming words.
Year 3 write their names using Viking runes Year 3 aged some paper and then wrote their name using Viking runes to produce some very authentic results.
Sports Reminders Rain or shine, sports lessons for Year 4 upwards will always take place outside. Pupils must have a change of clothing in school on the days they participate in sport, particularly in periods of adverse weather. Please ensure that the spare clothing is Cranmore sports kit where possible. Pupils in Year 2 upwards should have their shin pads, boots and water bottles with them for their PE and Games lessons. A message from our Chaplain A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in Heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Reflection On Sunday we celebrated the Feast of All Saints. This is a time when we remember, recall and give thanks for the many people who have been close to Jesus and followed His call. It is also a time to remember that all of us are called to be saints. We are all called to listen to Jesus and follow Him. On Monday we celebrate All Souls’ Day. This is a special time to remember and pray for all those who have died.
Dear pupils, parents and staff
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your generosity in supporting our recent Charity outreaches. So far, we have raised over £1,200 for Number 5 and over £1,100 for Mary's Meals. In these difficult times, with so much uncertainty surrounding us, your kindness reminds all of us of the strength of faith and the goodness of the human heart. It is very much appreciated. Mr Jakubowski
