16 MAY 2022 Message from the Headmaster

Well done to all the pupils who took part in the Junior Maths Challenge last week. There were some terrific results across the year groups and three pupils have been invited to participate in an additional round set to take place in June. I would like to mention how much I enjoyed the 1SH assembly on Wednesday. The theme of kindness was excellently portrayed by the pupils and even more impressive was the fact that pupils had designed and written the assembly material themselves. Thank you also to the saxophone quartet who performed wonderfully with Mr Harris in our Senior assembly. There were many exciting fixtures closely contested throughout the week in golf, tennis and cricket. A number of families and pupils were entertained by the U13 match on the main square against Northcote Lodge. The Cranmore team needed to produce some exceptionally accurate bowling towards the end of the match and they prevailed, winning by 11 runs. Thank you to our visiting music teachers who have welcomed parents to instrumental and singing lessons during our Music Open Week. I hope that parents have enjoyed listening to their talented musicians. Next week, pupils in our Upper Prep and Senior School will be sitting end of year examinations. As well as being one part of pupil assessment during the academic year, these are also an opportunity for pupils to become accustomed to the process and to develop exam technique. Pupils should prepare to the best of their ability but I encourage them to have adequate sleep and exercise over the weekend. Mr Everitt

UKMT Junior Maths Challenge At the beginning of term, all of our Year 7 and 8 students took part in the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge. We are delighted with the results, with 60 students (over half of those who took part) receiving Bronze, Silver and Gold Certificates. Six students, Will K, Moby D, Adam H, Oliver C, Joseph N and Aayan A, all received Gold certificates. Will, Moby and Adam have been invited to the follow-on round which takes place in June. Congratulations and well done to all students involved!

At the end of last term, our Year 7 and Year 8 students were involved in our inaugural House Team Maths Challenge. We saw some excellent team-work and problem-solving taking place and it was great to see our pupils actively and enthusiastically engaging with Maths in a competitive environment. It will be the turn of our Year 4, 5 and 6 students after half-term, at which point the reigning house will be revealed! The trailer video for the event can be found on our VLE here.

The Mathematics department has a selection of weekly enrichment opportunities for pupils at Cranmore, with Board Games club for Year 4 students taking place on Wednesday after school; Maths Challenge club for Years 5 to 8 on a Thursday after school; and our drop-in support club, MathsLink taking place on Friday lunchtimes— plenty for students to be involved with! Mr Savvides, Head of Maths (Senior School)

Music News My congratulations to these members of Saxophone Group who performed with such style in assembly on Monday. Bravo! Mr Harris, Director of Music

Bugsy Malone Rehearsals We are enjoying seeing the St Teresa’s girls at the rehearsals for Bugsy Malone, the first of many collaborations of this kind. I would like to remind all pupils to check the VLE Drama, Senior Production 22 page for updated rehearsal schedules. All pupils must be off-book for after half-term with songs learnt.

If any parents have items at home that we could upcycle and would be useful for the Drama Department, such as hats, clothes, shoes, walking sticks, umbrellas, small props which you no longer need and we could use in drama lessons and performances, please send them in with your child to give to me.

Thank you very much for all your hard work.

Mrs Hanson, Head of Drama

Lower Prep Wellbeing Workshop This week in the Lower Prep School we had an excellent Wellbeing Workshop for Years 1, 2 and 3 from Open View Education. The children learnt about mental wellbeing and the importance of looking out for one another, with methods to support themselves and their peers. They performed role play scenarios in groups and actively participated in a range of activities designed specifically for their age groups. Thank you to the Open View Education group for providing such an inspiring and motivating opportunity for our pupils to engage in the discussion of positive mental wellbeing. Miss Gallop

This Week’s House Cup Winners

Congratulations to Stokes House in the Lower Prep and Bowen House in the Upper Prep and Seniors for gaining the highest number of merits this week!

1SH Assembly on Kindness 1SH performed a wonderful assembly all about ‘kindness’ on Wednesday 18th May. The children had decided upon the theme as a class and used their own experiences to collectively write the script. We were very proud of the fact that they were able to speak so clearly to the audience, and use role-play and song to share the importance of being kind every day.

Lower Prep School Council Here are some of our new Lower Prep School councillors proudly showing off their new School Council badges. In their first meeting this term, the councillors asked Mrs Carpenter if we could invest in some new School Council badges as the other ones were looking a little worn. We were delighted to be able to present them with their new ones in assembly on Monday! It is great to see our pupils voices having a valued impact in our Lower Prep School. The councillors are currently hard at work preparing for our charity cake sale next Friday 27th. Don’t forget to bring in 50p for our chosen charities if you would like to purchase a cake!

Nursery News In Science last week the children had a wonderful time engaging in an experiment to make a volcano. They loved watching the chemical reaction! In the Ballet session they had to follow instructions to perform the correct ballet positions and then they played a shark game. The Pre-Nursery children have loved being out in the sunshine with water play and mark-making with the large chalks. Ms Luke, Head of Nursery

Sports Roundup

Our U13 tennis team had a great result beating Kings College Wimbledon on Wednesday. U9s, U10s, U11s and U12s have also been in action against Shrewsbury House and KCS.

We had an amazing morning of cricket against Danes Hill on Saturday, with four U11 teams and three U10 teams playing both home and away. Cranmore produced 7 wins from 7 matches with some superb performances on display. The U11s are proving to be very strong this year, also winning 3 matches against Downsend on Tuesday. There have been many more fixtures across all age groups including schools Rokeby, Downsend, RGS Prep, KCS, Northcote Lodge, Aldro, Homefield, and Shrewsbury House.

Our second golf fixture took place on our newly refurbished golf course on Tuesday, with Year 5, Year 6 and Year 7 pupils in action against RGS Prep. It was a very enjoyable evening with Cranmore ending up being the overall winners.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

Month of Mary

Thought for the week: How will you celebrate the Month of Mary? Prayer for the Month of May We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God; Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from every danger, O Glorious and Blessed Virgin. Amen. REFLECTION In addition to the myriad feast days honouring Our Lady in her many titles and virtues, the entire month of May is especially given to her praise. May, when the earth blooms in springtime beauty, is an ideal time for our thoughts and sentiments to be directed towards this supremely lovely Queen of Heaven and Earth, who busily labours from her heavenly throne to conquer hearts, minds, and souls for the greater glory of her Son. Let us Pray:

Our Father Hail Mary 1 minute silence In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
