16th NOVEMBER 2020

Message from the Headmaster Dear Parents To commence Anti-Bullying Week, pupils and staff had the opportunity to take part in the Odd Socks Day celebration of our individuality. This was a prelude to the pupils being inspired by the intellect and compassion of our visitor, award-winning author, Onjali Rauf. She delighted the pupils with her insight into creative writing, using her life experiences and imagination to help explain bullying and to highlight misconceptions about homelessness. We are delighted to announce our new School Council members who will have the responsibility of representing their class at meetings as well as providing a valuable student voice and opinion about developments around their school. Nursery children have been busy exploring Forest School, whilst Year 2 were able to visit China, through VR headsets. Year 5 created some strikingly impressive Roman shields as part of their History homework and I was extremely impressed with the artwork and captions of how children displayed acts of kindness at home throughout the week. Well done to all the pupils involved. In school at this time of year, we enjoy seasonal traditions such as nativity performances, the carol service and the pupil Christmas raffle. Our staff, pupils and the CPA are working creatively to continue the traditions within current constraints. I look forward to sharing further details with you next week.

Mr Everitt

Odd Socks Day On Monday 16th November as part of Anti -Bullying Week, pupils wore odd socks to show how unique we all are and to celebrate our individuality. It was wonderful to see such a colourful array of socks and even some staff joined in!

A virtual author visit from Onjali Raúf for Anti-Bullying Week On Wednesday, award-winning author Onjali Raúf spoke to all Upper Prep and Senior School pupils. Many pupils ordered signed copies of her new book, ‘The Night Bus Hero’, which deals sensitively with the issues of bullying and homelessness. Onjali is a wonderful example of compassion in action and she spoke passionately about the plight of the homeless, giving our pupils an eye-opening insight into the sad situation in which many people sadly find themselves. Onjali answered an array of questions from pupils in all year groups about her experience of being an author, bullying and how to deal with it and the inspiration behind The Night Bus Hero, a homeless man called Thomas. As a school, we have raised £1,449 for the Number 5 charity, but if you feel moved to find out more about how to support the homeless, here are some organisations Onjali recommends: buses4homeless.org streetlink.org.uk uk.depaulcharity.org facebook.com/groups/LolasHomeless

Anti-Bullying Week acts of kindness and posters Pupils were asked to name acts of kindness they have performed this week and they also produced some amazing anti-bullying posters, which are on display in school.

Year 5 pupils’ Roman shields Lockdown may have led to many of us having to spend more time at home, but Year 5 students at Cranmore have been keeping themselves busy by designing Roman shields for their History Takeaway Menu homework. You can see that some of the students have gone above and beyond what was expected of them and have thus produced outstanding pieces of homework. Mr Cross looks forward to reviewing future masterpieces by our talented students.

Nursery news In French this week the children learnt the different parts of the body. Forest School was great fun. The children climbed in the trees, used spades for digging and used the ropes. The activity they enjoyed the most was swinging on the rope swing!

A busy week at Forest School for Reception This week, Reception have been very busy at Forest School. They had the important job of digging over the raised beds to prepare them for planting some seeds. This was lots of fun and we even discovered a few small carrots! We also made crowns by collecting beautiful Autumn leaves to decorate our crowns. We think we look like Princes and Princesses!

Year 1 pupils working together and their pictures of the Houses of Parliament at sunset

Year 2 made pea shooters from Elder wood at Forest School Year 2 pupils peeled Elder wood, used hand drills to make a hole through the centre and made ‘pea shooters’. They also enjoyed the mud kitchen.

Year 2 explored China using VR headsets and in their role play area Year 2 spent an afternoon exploring China as an introduction to their new topic this term. The children identified different places on a map of China and then viewed them on the VR headsets.

Sports Reminders Rain or shine, sports lessons for Year 4 upwards will always take place outside. Pupils must have a change of clothing in school on the days they participate in sport, particularly in periods of adverse weather. Please ensure that the spare clothing is Cranmore sports kit where possible. Pupils in Year 2 upwards should have their shin pads, boots and water bottles with them for their PE and Games lessons. Mouth guards There is now the option to buy customised Cranmore mouth guards. See flyer below or go to: https://www.opromouthguards.com

Medical Update

Dear All, We have now completed our second full week of mandatory face coverings for all staff and senior pupils in communal areas. We would like to thank you all for your co-operation with this - just a quick reminder that, A face covering should: Cover your nose and mouth while allowing you to breathe comfortably Fit comfortably but securely against the side of the face Unless disposable, it should be able to be washed with other items of laundry according to fabric washing instructions

When wearing a face covering you should: Wash your hands thoroughly before putting it on and taking it off Avoid wearing on your neck or forehead Avoid touching the part of the face covering in contact with your mouth and nose When removing a face covering: Only handle the straps, ties or clips Do not give it to someone else to use If single-use, dispose of it carefully If reusable, it should be kept in a clean plastic bag If your child needs to share a lift with someone outside of their support bubble or household, they should: Share with the same person each time Open the windows for ventilation Wear a face covering (if they are aged 11 or over)

If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact the Nurses – nurse@cranmore.org Thank you, The Medical Room

A message from our Chaplain A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord.  “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.” Matthew 25: 14-30 The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Reflection This week we pause and reflect on the Parable of the Talents. God has given all of us talents and unique gifts. Let us use them to help and support others.

Think carefully this week about your gifts and talents. Think about whether you have a vocation and what the word vocation means. Mr Jakubowski
