Start of term at our link school, St Kizito in Uganda

Dear Parents We are hosting an Open Morning today and tomorrow. As ever, I know that it is our pupils who will be the most powerful ambassadors for Cranmore. Form 2 return from their residential adventure today. No doubt they shall be very tired but will have many great memories too. I shall be attending the National IAPS Conference next week from Wednesday onwards. It is always a great opportunity to get the pulse of developments within prep school education. Mr Everitt will assume responsibility for the school in my absence. Yours sincerely Michael Connolly STOP PRESS Sadly, the music event at Cherry Trees on Friday 28th September, which we advertised in last week’s Chronicle, has had to be CANCELLED.

Save the date! Friday 7th December will be Christmas Hat Day! Your hats can be as creative as you like, as long as they follow the Christmas theme and spread some Christmas joy. Pupils in the Junior and Senior Department will be invited to donate ÂŁ1, and funds raised will go towards Horsley & Bookham Riding for the Disabled AND Guide Dogs for the Blind.

The children are all settling in happily into life in Nursery and are engaging in a wide variety of activities already. We have all enjoyed the sunshine this past week and the children have discovered minibeasts and the mud kitchen in our garden. We are working on ‘listening skills’ as our introduction to phonics. The children made ‘listening ears’ and then went for a walk around the Cranmore grounds. They stopped to listen in several different places, hearing birds in the trees, traffic on the road, singing from the Auditorium and children’s voices. This week they are hearing the initial sound ‘s’ in words. The children have been very creative and our rooms are looking colourful, ready to welcome our visitors on our Open Mornings this week. Do pop in and see us!

Sports News On Saturday 15th September the 1st Vll travelled to Parkside for their annual tournament. In a very close group we narrowly missed qualifying for the main competition on goal difference. This meant we were in the plate competition, where we defeated Lanesborough and Cranleigh to take our place in the final against Downsend. Unfortunately, they were stronger on the day, which meant we finished as runners-up. Well done to the team for playing lovely football throughout the afternoon. Mr O’Neill

Summer Splash! Over the summer we headed off to Rockley Le Lac campsite, at Mimizan in South West France, for a water sports holiday. Over the week we kayaked, stand-up paddle-boarded, canoed and built rafts as well as learning to sail both dinghies and catamarans – which seemed to involve quite a few capsizes. Luckily the warm shallow waters of the lake were inviting on a hot day! We also found time to go cycling through the sand dunes and woods, play games on the beach, climb the Dune de Pyla (Europe’s largest sand dune) and have ice cream in Arcachon. We are already looking forward to next year’s holiday at Azu Rivage in July! Mr B E Martin

A Cranmore family has a drum kit which is no longer needed. They were going to donate the kit to charity but wondered first if anyone at Cranmore has any use for it. It’s not in top condition but is most certainly good enough for a beginner. Please contact Ms Wilson via Mrs Thornton in the music department.

Congratulations to the many Cranmore pupils who passed their music exams with flying colours. This pupil passed Grade 7 saxophone with Distinction. Bravo!

Any children wishing to take up the recorder, bassoon or oboe should approach Mr Harris immediately, as the staff responsible for teaching these instruments have spaces available.

. All About Castles Our Topic is Castles in Upper Prep. Here you can see the children making a castle for their new role play area before their visit to Windsor Castle. You can see how much fun they had there! After the trip, they used charcoal and sketching pencils to draw their own castles. Some of the pictures were full of action as soldiers were trying to defend their castle from attack. Then during their session at Forest School they made their own shields using natural materials.

Cranmore Book Week 1st – 5th October

During Cranmore Book Week, there will be lots of activities and competitions based on books. We won’t be having a dress-as-abook-character-day this time, as we will be doing this on World Book Day next March. All through the week we will be holding a Book Fair in the Library Corridor. You are all very welcome to come and browse from 3.30pm to 5.00pm each afternoon. We can take cash or cheques but not cards (sorry). We receive a fantastic commission from Travelling Books, of books worth 60% of the Book Fair takings! From Monday 1st October, your child may come home with a ‘Book Wish’, which is a card with the title of a book he or she chose at the fair whilst browsing with the class. Please do not feel obliged to buy this book; do come and check the books out for yourself at the afterschool sessions. If you cannot make it to the Book Fair, but you would like to buy the book your child picked out, please send a cheque made payable to Cranmore School in an envelope, together with the ‘Book wish’ card, which should include name and form. Address the envelope to Mrs Trumble and the book will be sent via the form teacher. If a particular title proves especially popular and sells out quickly, we can order extra copies to arrive within a few days. These will then be delivered to your child’s class. The children enjoy choosing books for themselves at the Book Fair and we are always pleased to encourage them in their love of reading. Our last Book Fair was very well stocked and also raised a huge amount of commission in books for the Senior and Junior Libraries. Thank you very much for your support! Mrs Trumble
