22nd November 2019 Dear Parents, I am looking forward to attending the service at Ockham Church on Sunday for the annual visit by our Junior Chamber Choir. It is always a pleasure to hear them perform in such a sacred setting, one which has a remarkable history. Looking ahead to next week, our Year 5 pupils will be giving a short drama performance for their parents on Wednesday and, on Thursday, we shall celebrate our special Mass to recognise the Feast of St Andrew. Tomorrow, we have a busy programme of rugby and one hopes the weather will be just a little bit warmer. Yours sincerely, Michael Connolly

Making dumplings in the mud kitchen.

Making Chinese flags using material, sticks, paint and string.

Making chop sticks (developing the skill of whittling) and using them to eat prawn crackers.

Making a den for a dragon.

2RF performed wonderfully in their Assembly on the theme of Respect.

Junior News Congratulations to Alex O, who received a Certificate of Achievement in the South East of England Chess Championships. Congratulations also to Maximus G and Eoghan F, who won medals in a Year 3 Club Rugby Tournament.

Congratulations again to these girls who received their medals for achieving third place in the St George’s hockey tournament.

Whole School News Shoebox Appeal Thank you to all those who responded to our Shoebox Appeal. As a school, we made a very generous donation of 135 shoeboxes to the Appeal and all of these will be transported to Romania next week to make Christmas a much happier time for the children who receive them. Thank you so much to Michael Agius, Kate Paulson and the Chaplaincy Team for helping with this.

Congratulations to everybody in Bowen House, who achieved the highest number of merits in the school last week in both the Junior and the Senior departments!

Sports News Rugby We have had a superb start to the rugby season, including comprehensive wins for our U13s over St Johns Leatherhead, Reigate Grammar and CLFS. The Saturday morning quadrangular, which involved playing three 20-minute matches, resulted in Cranmore scoring 12 tries and conceding none across the matches. This is a fantastic effort from these Year 8 (and Year 7) boys and is a testament to the rugby programme at Cranmore. Equally as impressive were the performances from the U10 and U11 whole year groups. On Friday, the U10s travelled to St John’s Beaumont and on Saturday, both age groups hosted St George’s on the Henderson Fields. The style of rugby and the results produced are even more impressive given the fact that both opposition schools have been playing rugby since the beginning of September. For the results, see the sports portal, via the Cranmore website or by using the SOCS mobile web app. U10s rugby versus St John’s Beaumont

Swimming Last Wednesday, 48 members of our swim squad headed to KCS Wimbledon for the annual gala between both schools. Many Cranmore swimmers swam a year up (sometimes two years up) in age categories which made the very close result even more impressive. Netball and Hockey Cranmore U8s netball teams hosted Cranleigh on Thursday with two matches being played. A lot of the skills and training concepts came to fruition on the afternoon, resulting in two fantastic performances. Mrs Attree was beaming from ear to ear and was clearly very proud of the girls. On Monday, our U9s girls hockey teams played in two competitive matches against Downsend.

Sports News Cross Country Our U13 cross country team entered the Guildford District Trials at Charterhouse last week. With the impressive running on show from Cranmore pupils, we are hopeful that some of our runners will qualify to represent the district.

Squash Members of our squash squad had the very fortunate opportunity to watch professional squash players showcase their skills at the Channel VAS Championships at St George’s Hill. The exhibition event allowed the pupils to see the fitness and skill levels of these top players up close. This included meeting the World Number 2 Squash player Mohamed Elshorbagy, as well as Mazen Hesham and Borja Golan.

Music News Reasons to play Double Bass by Will K, Year 6 I’ve been learning double bass since year 2, and I’m currently the only bass player at Cranmore. The bass is a great instrument to play, so here are some reasons to give it a try. If you’re interested, please speak to Mr Harris, Miss Thornton, the cello teacher, Mrs Barnes, or me. 1. It’s a beautiful and impressive-looking instrument. 2. It makes a lovely, deep, resonating sound (very different from its smaller relatives like the violin). 3. Cranmore has a school bass, so although you’d need to hire one for home use, you won’t need to lug it around in and out of school. 4. The double bass plays an important role in the orchestra, adding depth and atmosphere. 5. The main orchestra at Cranmore always needs a bass player so you might be able to join the orchestra earlier than players of other instruments, like I did in year 5.

6. You’ll be in demand! The double bass is diverse musically and is a key part of a jazz line up as well as classical orchestra; it even features in some rock and pop music!

This young flautist played ‘The Mango Walk’ with real style during Assembly.
