Cranmore Chronicle 24th May 2019 Editor: Mrs S Watkinson
Dear Parents, I can hardly believe that we have reached half-term already. Looking back, so much has been achieved and I am sure our pupils, and you, are ready for a break. As ever, this edition has lots of news on recent activities and forthcoming events. I wish to draw your attention to a new fixture in our calendar, the Cranmore Canter, which will take place at the end of June. Now is the time to start training! Immediately after the break, we have the Common Entrance exams for our most senior pupils and we wish them well. I know they have all worked extremely hard in preparation. I should mention that I shall be away from Tuesday noon until Friday as I shall be assuming my other role as a school inspector. I wish you and your family a most enjoyable holiday. Yours sincerely, Michael Connolly
Nursery News The children in our Nursery were treated to a visit from the White Watch Firefighters.
Spraying water with the hose was the best part!
Role play: visiting the doctor’s surgery for a check up
The Woodland Adventure at Forest School
Learning all about road safety
Juniors
Robert and David came in to deliver a Wintershall assembly to the Junior Department. They retold the story of the calming of the storm and of how Jesus healed the man with leprosy. Our pupils were enthralled by their performance.
Role play: visiting the doctor’s surgery for a check up
LB delivered a very entertaining Assembly based on their life in Lower Prep so far this year.
UC chose to have a camping party as their marble jar treat. They worked together as a team to put up the tent and then had a treat and a story in there.
Upper Prep has been studying Kenya this term, so we were absolutely delighted to have a very interesting visitor, Virginia McKenna, who starred in the film 'Born Free'. She is now a trustee of the Born Free Foundation. She is also the grandparent of one of our pupils in Uppers. She amazed us all with her fascinating life and good work for the wildlife in Africa.
Seniors
Congratulations to Fourth Formers Adrian, Cameron and Hugo, who made it through to the District round of the Rotary Young Writers competition. Cameron achieved a Highly Commended Award for his piece of creative writing. We look forward to entering next year’s competition.
6H has been working hard this week, preparing for their Common Entrance and working on their French landmarks project.
Currently, all the 6th Form are exploring the work of John Sell Cotman, using the knowledge they acquired from the formal exercises to decide how he created his original work.
Two finished masterpieces
6th Form pupils learn to ensure that paint is translucent and how to build up intense colour in layers.
Second Form have been making copper reliefs based on the plants growing in the school grounds.
Having had a sunny day last week, 2JH were able to make some striking fabric cyanotypes. We used plants that are currently growing on the Cranmore site.
Sports Focus
The Cranmore Canter
It gives me great pleasure to share information regarding our next big family sport event, the Cranmore Canter. This is a 'fun run' style occasion for all abilities with the option to enter one of two different course distances (1.5 km or 3 km). It will take place on the morning of Sunday 30th June, with the shorter race taking place on the Cranmore school site and the longer race including surrounding Horsley countryside. The occasion promises to be an enjoyable event for everyone connected with Cranmore and we hope to see as many as possible joining us. Further information and sign-up details will be sent out by letter. Skiing Success Our skiers experienced more success on Sunday at the Sandown Dual Slalom which included 38 teams across the different age categories. Two of our aged 10 (and under) teams finished 1st and 3rd, our aged 14 (and under) picked up Silver and our aged 12 (and under) were eventual champions in their competition. Cricket Our U10 cricket teams are experiencing a 'purple patch' at the moment with their two whole year group fixtures against Parkside and St. George's. All four teams went unbeaten across the eight matches, which once again shows the depth in this year group. Other strong cricket performances came from our U11s versus Parkside and our U8s (boys) and U9s versus Rokeby. Cranmore had their first all girls cricket fixture last week! Two U8 teams played against Rowan school with both matches being very competitive. The batting and fielding on show was fantastic and the enjoyment from all the players was obvious to see. Tennis and Golf Tennis fixtures have continued throughout the week against Danes Hill and Shrewsbury House, including a dominant display from our U12s, and our U10s keeping up their unbeaten record. Finally, our Golf Squad had another enjoyable match against Cranleigh on Thursday.

Senior Sports Day To the Parents of pupils in the Senior Department Dear parents, Senior Department Sports Day will be on Thursday 13th June. Sports staff, together with House staff, have been choosing pupils for events, giving everybody an opportunity to participate on the day. Final details of the events in which pupils will be representing their houses will be posted in the gym changing room by Monday 3rd June. The timetable of events is on the next page of the Chronicle and is also on the website. Printed programmes will be available on the day. All events will be held on the field behind the pavilion. Field events will start at 10.00 a.m., except for the 6th form who will start at 9.30 a.m. Track events will start promptly at 2 p.m. and events will conclude by 4.30 p.m. Children are expected to remain until the end of all the events and support their House. They will then be asked to return to their classrooms and collect their kit bags and uniform. Every child who is participating will need their coloured House T-shirt in addition to their sports kit. They should also bring a water bottle, sun screen and a hat or waterproof depending on the weather. If coming to watch the field events in the morning, please be aware of throwing events and take care when crossing the field. Spectators with young children should keep them close at all times to avoid any unnecessary accidents. Spectators may like to bring their own chairs or rugs.
No dogs are allowed on the Cranmore site.
On this occasion, children will be allowed to travel home in their sports kit. We would be grateful if parents would check that their child has their school shoes with them when they leave school. There will be a short Late Class on Sports Day for children waiting for collection at 5 p.m. Should it be necessary to cancel the event due to inclement weather, an announcement will be posted on the school web site by 9 a.m.: www.cranmoreprep.co.uk The car park is always exceptionally busy on Sports Day. Please park considerately, making sure that you are not preventing another car from leaving the car park. We are all looking forward to this exciting event. Yours sincerely, Barry Everitt, Deputy Head

The Junior 12.20 p.m.Guitar Concert by Upper F2 Prep and Form 1 pupils was a great success. For some pupils, it was F5 their first solo performance and they all played with such confidence. Thank you to Mr Smith for his fantastic teaching and for inspiring many of our pupils.
