The Chronicle: 24 January 2020

Page 1

24th January 2020 Dear Parents Last week I was delighted to be in my home city, Glasgow, for a conference. This was held by CISC, the professional association for Catholic Independent Schools. I have attended this annual event for 26 consecutive years, but this was the first occasion it had been held north of the border. Looking back, I feel this annual gathering has given me a true insight into how Catholic Education has evolved in recent decades. As ever, there is a recognition that strong pastoral care must be at the centre of all we do. Of course, this can never be at the expense of delivering a high quality academic education, which every child is entitled to receive. We live in an age of greater regulation, which is often necessary. It is right that we should be accountable for what we do, albeit there are some who would be happy to see the demise of Faith Schools. At some point this term, we shall have a Diocesan Inspection which will focus on how well we deliver our mission to be a thriving Catholic School which truly meets the needs of our community. Yours sincerely, Michael Connolly

Junior News Chefs’ Assembly Children in the Junior department were treated to a visit from the Cranmore chefs during Assembly. The chefs showed the children some less well known fruit and vegetables, some of which were really tricky! They showed us the Eatwell plate, which demonstrates how much of each food group we should eat. They also gave us many fun facts and tested our knowledge. Do you know how many seeds the average strawberry or pomegranate has?

Junior News Bread-making in Year 3 On Thursday 16th January, chef Alistair Warwick taught some Year 3 children how to make bread dough. He showed them how to shape the dough into loaves. The children then took the dough home to bake themselves. Thank you, Alistair, for such a wonderful experience!

Junior News Year 1 are studying Europe in Geography and have produced some super Eiffel Tower paintings and designs on the computer on this theme.

Three cake sales took place on Tuesday, including this one in Year 2. Thank you very much for all your delicious contributions!

Junior News Our Year 1 children set up a French CafĂŠ in the classroom to help them learn about money. Half the children were waiters and the other half were customers. The children read menus, took orders, made some pretend food and paid for the food with the correct amount of money.

Year 2 have been enjoying Maths games to practise some of their Maths skills

Senior News Year 5 Theatre Trip to see Peter Pan Goes Wrong On Thursday 16th January, Year 5 went on a theatre trip to see Peter Pan Goes Wrong. The pupils and staff who attended the performance watched 2 hours of hilarious entertainment, where everything that could go wrong did. The joy of live theatre is that no show is the same and mistakes can never be predicted. In this show, safety instructions were broken by the actors before the show started. There was an actor with stage fright, who ended up with a broken leg. One couldn’t learn his lines, so was given a headset with prompts which were interrupted by shipping forecasts. Dogs were stuck in doors and had to be chain sawed out during a mother’s lullaby. The set was highly insecure, bunk beds collapsed, windows fell off and flying wires dropped Peter Pan out of the sky. Captain Hook needed a ‘hand’ to open the bottle of poison and an ambulance was called when Tinkerbell was electrocuted. The backstage crew, who are usually anonymous, had to feature on numerous occasions, as stand-in actors or to put out fires, perform CPR or mop up mess. There was a lot of laughter and it reassured us that it is alright to make mistakes on stage, as long as you keep going and smile at the end. Let’s hope they are never that dramatic!

Sports News Sports Report

It has been a very busy period of sport at Cranmore, with fixtures taking place every afternoon over the last week. Our U9 girls participated in the Cranleigh Hockey Tournament, and then played some great netball matches, at home against Downsend. On the same afternoon, the U9 boys played rugby against the same opposition. Accuracy of passing, tackling technique and playing as a team were notable characteristics of these young Cranmore teams.

The 1st XIII rugby team has had two fixtures this week, a very competitive match on Saturday against Danes Hill and a good run out against Downsend last Wednesday. The performance against Downsend was superb, with both attack and defence systems taking shape, which created a great spectacle and result (see sports portal).

A Cranmore U10s rugby team entered the Shrewsbury House Festival with 15 schools participating. A committed defence line with patient attack contributed to the Year 5 team playing very well. By the end of the festival, it was noted that Cranmore was one of the top two sides to compete on the day. Our four U11 rugby team played in cold, but glorious conditions against Shrewsbury House School, on Tuesday. It was great to see the whole Year Group play so well and evidently enjoy the fixtures, on our fantastic Henderson Fields.

Last Friday, our U8s Netball team played against Claremont School showcasing that, even though this year group are very strong at hockey, their netball skills are developing very well.

A couple of special mentions two Year 8 pupils who competed in individual events for Cranmore at the weekend. J. Maylen swam superbly to win his heat and come 2nd overall in the 100m breaststroke at the Surrey Schools. A. Wood ran in the Guildford District cross-country at Reigate Priory. With his highly ranked finish, he has now been selected to represent Surrey at a South East cross-country match. Well done to both pupils!

We've hit the 200 mark for people attending the Harlequins vs London Irish rugby match on Saturday 15th February. If you wish to still attend, please email harlequins@cranmore.org to book your tickets. Mr Hodgson, Director of Sport
