24th MAY 2021

Message from the Headmaster Dear Parents, Our Cranmore pupils have completed another busy half term with boundless enthusiasm. A highlight this week was the pupils in character and suitably dressed during Evacuee Day. They immensely enjoyed a host of activities including singing, dancing, games and WW2 site visits using VR headsets. Our younger pupils enjoyed their visits to the forest school where they decorated spinners and had the opportunity to roast marshmallows. The U11 cricket teams relished being the centre of attention at the weekend and had impressive victories against Cranleigh. Another excellent victory on Thursday against Shrewsbury House ensured that the U11 team progressed through to the semi-

finals of the Surrey Cup. The feedback from prospective parents who attended our May Open Day was overwhelmingly positive and an even greater number will be joining us for the second Open Day in June, which is once again oversubscribed. They were incredibly impressed with the facilities, and tours provided them an insight into the many opportunities available to pupils at our school. I am very grateful to pupils, their families and staff for continuing to follow the protocols and procedures that we have in place. I am delighted that we have been able to sensibly modify measures in school to enable parents back on site for some outdoor events after half term, I very much look forward to welcoming you back. Mr Everitt

Royal Mail Stamp competition– some Cranmore entries! The entries are in for the Royal Mail ‘Honouring the Heroes of the Pandemic….on a stamp’ design competition! I have been impressed with the thought that has gone into the views of our students to celebrate individuals or groups of people they think have worked hard to keep the country moving over the last challenging year. Our students have shown great compassion for these people in the way they have celebrated their efforts with their designs -no matter whether they know their heroes personally or have learnt of their work on the news. These are just a few of the brilliant designs created by our students at Cranmore. #HeroStamps and @RoyalMail

Year 5 pupils study microclimates In our Year 5 Geography class we studied microclimate (in lockdown) so it was lovely to be able to walk around our beautiful school grounds and experience for ourselves some of the causes of microclimate: surface, aspect, shelter, physical features and buildings. Oversubscribed! Cranmore’s highly successful May Open Day! Record numbers of families applied for tours at our Open Day on Saturday– as a result of which we have a waiting list for tours in the coming weeks and for our June Open Day. Photos show, left to right– cricket match as families start to arrive; refreshments and cakes for visitors from our fabulous chefs; Smart new entrance to Lower Prep, The Sports Hall, Lower Prep Music, cricket scoring and the site.

We were also delighted to open our new Hospitality Suite on Saturday. This provides an attractive, bright venue, overlooking the cricket pitches, to host some of our many social events as well as meetings over the years to come.

“Thank you again for the open morning at Cranmore today. We really enjoyed being able to see for ourselves the fantastic facilities available to the pupils. We also found the teachers very welcoming, professional and informative.“

Year 2 pupils enjoy Evacuee Day using VR headsets, as well as dressing up and dancing to WW2 music to recreate the past! In Year 2 we enjoyed a FANTASTIC evacuee day yesterday! The children (and staff) came dressed as evacuees and enjoyed a variety of activities, including:

VR headsets visiting some significant places during WW2

Singing and dancing to traditional WW2 songs

Fantastic Evacuee Day in Year 2 includes WW2 games and a VE day party! Year 2 evacuee day iactivities included playing WW2 games and making spinning tops! This all culminated in a VE day party where the children shared some of the things they had done during the day and tried some typical WW2 food…spam and corned beef! Impressive choral solo performances in Cranmore Senior Assembly Congratulations to our two superb singers in the Upper Prep Senior Monday Assembly this week. The photograph on the left shows: Kamran H (7JH) who sang ‘Be Still for the Presence of the Lord’ and Dylan K (5SM) who sang ‘Cockles and Mussels’. Mr Harris, Director of Music

Time for Reflection for Years 4 and 5 Year 4 pupils, shown in the photograph below on the left, spent time in the Chapel focusing on the Feast of Pentecost and enjoying some reflective activities. This Year Pope Francis has asked us to focus on the life of St Joseph and Mr Heaver led an inspiring Year 5 reflection on this great Saint in the chapel. We were reminded that it is often through silence that God speaks. Photograph below, right. Mr Jakubowski, School Chaplain

Forest School adventures in Reception The Reception children enjoyed some long-awaited sunshine on Tuesday. We started by playing a game of ‘ship to shore’ by jumping across a long rope and pretending it was the 'plank' to walk along. We also decorated paper bags to fill with 'treasures' that we could find in the Forest School site! Mrs Hobdell and Mrs Stefano, Reception Teachers

Learning is fun in Cranmore Nursery! At Forest School this week the children made and decorated spinners using wood and wool. They enjoyed their last Forest School fire of the half term, roasting marshmallows to have their smorgs for snack. They liked programming the Beebots in their ICT session and playing with the community blocks in the garden. The Pre-Nursery children have had fun investigating musical instruments in the garden, playing with the cars and creating pictures on the floor with chalks. Ms Luke, Head of Nursery

A Message from our Chaplain A reading from the Book of Acts When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from Heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God

Pentecost In the reading this week we hear how the Holy Spirit came down on the disciples as tongues of fire. This is the moment the Church is born, the moment where nothing will stay the same. The Holy Spirit changes everything, turns the disciples into apostles and enables them to go out with strength and power. Let us pray this week that we too maybe open to the Holy Spirit. Let us pray for the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
