Role play: Upper Prep C hide in their Anderson shelter during an air raid. Dear Parents I wish to congratulate our rugby teams who performed so well last Saturday to retain the Murray Cup. There have been many events for the performing arts recently to showcase our talent: the recital at the Guildford Institute, the strings day at Charterhouse and our very own music assembly in the Junior Department. It is good to see that the VR headsets, funded by the CPA, are being put to good use. For example, our younger pupils have been using this kit to explore a virtual Eurostar and, further away, India. We recently held our 7+ Scholarships for Academic, Music, and Sport awards. As ever, there was a very high standard and I wish to acknowledge the achievement of the twelve recipients for 2019. Yours sincerely Michael Connolly

Congratulations to George S. after recent swimming success at Epsom District Swimming Club Autumn Championships, collecting 7 Gold and 1 Silver Medal out of the 8 races in his age group. George is ranked 17th in the UK for boys’ 200m freestyle for his year group.

Using our virtual headsets, Form 1P explored India. Highlights of their ‘visit’ include: elephants being washed in a river, a camel fair in the desert, the view from the summit of Mount Everest and listening to musicians in a busy market.

Seniors What’s cooking? Form 3 rose to the challenge to carry out some baking at home whilst investigating chemical changes. Scientific results have never been so delicious. We are now learning about combustion - parents will be delighted to hear that we won’t be asking the children to do any of those investigations at home this time. Meanwhile, our cookery club rustled up some delicious pizzas.

One of our Third Formers, Gabriel, is delighted to have received a reply from David Walliams to a letter that he wrote to the author – in October! Gabriel penned his letter during Book Week and is the latest of several Cranmore pupils to have heard back from a well-known writer. David thanked him for writing and offered two pieces of advice: be original with your stories and keep reading!

Sports Focus Last Wednesday, our U13s rugby team won their match against Downsend in an end to end and a thrilling encounter. The performance wasn't perfect, but it's a sign of a good team when you aren't at your best, but still manage to achieve the result. The U9 A team went undefeated at the Aldro festival, and the U10s played well and improved throughout the day at the Shrewsbury House Festival. Also on Thursday, the rest of the U9 teams (B to E) won every match against Rokeby School, which was part of the Murray Cup. It was the turn of the U10s (B to E) matches for the Murray Cup on Friday, and again every team won. Saturday was the grand finale of the Murray Cup with the final four matches taking place at Rokeby School playing fields. Three wins on the day secured the overall win and, with that, Cranmore was awarded the Murray Cup for the second year in succession. Over 110 pupils played their part in retaining the trophy, a Cranmore experience of which they should be proud. Noah Seeback and Brandon Jose represented the school in the Individual Swimming Surrey Championships on Saturday evening. Both swam superbly well and finished 5th and 2nd in their respective disciplines. Tommy McNamara and Alex Wood also competed on Saturday, with the event being the District Cross Country in Reigate. Both ran well and enjoyed the experience.

Several pupils performed at a Young Musicians’ Recital at the Guildford Institute. C# sang ‘The Lord’s My Shepherd’ and each pupil also performed a solo piece. We also had some drama recitals which thrilled the audience, rounding off an evening of high quality performances. Thank you to all performers and parents who supported this event.

Our young soloists gave confident performances in Junior Department Music Assembly: Isobel, Barnaby, Jack, Max, George, Oliver, Eloise, Otis and Edward.

It was wonderful to see so many talented young musicians, from a number of local schools, attend the Charterhouse Prep Schools’ Strings Day. Playing a mix of Mozart, Schubert, Schumann and Haydn, the Cranmore pupils worked very hard in the afternoon rehearsals and then gave a sparkling performance in front of the large audience of parents. I was very pleased that our string players were given the opportunity to work with the new Head of Strings at Charterhouse, Rafael Bolivar, a superb violinist who has spent twenty years playing with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

From the School Nurse Dear Parents Please could we ask that all children are given a snack to bring into school along with a water bottle. There is a long gap between breakfast and lunch and the children really benefit from a mid-morning snack and keeping hydrated. Snacks should be healthy: fruit or a small sandwich are ideal. Snacks high in fat, salt and sugar (eg crisps, sweets and biscuits) are not suitable. Please remember: ALL snacks must be NUT FREE. Containers and water bottles should be named.
