21 FEBRUARY 2022 Message from the Headmaster I was delighted to welcome everyone back after the half-term break and it was lovely to see parents from Years 2, 3 and 5 at our Come and See and Coffee Mornings during the week. Our Reception pupils really enjoyed their visit to Painshill park for a fairy-tale adventure to link with their classroom topic. We had a visit on Thursday from a previous Cranmore pupil from 1968. The retired Colonel, Mr Crowley MBE, is now the Chief Executive of the South East Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association. He was delighted to see the new developments within the school and thrilled that over 30 pupils in Year 8 were already involved in the CCF programme. We have had some notable sporting achievements over the last number of weeks. Our cross-country squad excelled at the Highfield cross-country event just before half-term with two individual golds, a team gold and a team silver for Cranmore. Congratulations to Jackson in Year 6 who represented Surrey last week at the British Show Jumping Academy Show. He was a member of the group that won the team competition. I know everyone is looking forward to World Book Day next week and I am sure pupils and staff will be busy considering their costumes over the weekend.

Mr Everitt

Year 5 Coffee Morning

On Thursday 24th February, Year 5 parents were invited to a coffee morning in the Auditorium. Year 5 pupils, with great excitement, then showed off their exercise books from across the curriculum and proudly explained what they had been learning so far this year. It was wonderful to have parents and children together engaging in the pupils’ learning.

Hot chocolate and cookie sales

We held a hot chocolate sale for the Upper Prep and Senior pupils before half-term. £420 was raised from this event and the money will be split between two charities, TeamSeas and Place2Be.

The Lower Prep School Council thoroughly enjoyed selling cookies at morning break before half-term for their chosen charity the NSPCC. We raised £79.30. Well done to the councillors for helping to organise this event, deciding on the charity, making posters, collecting the money and selling the delicious cookies.

Upper Prep and Seniors Bravo to this fine young musician and guitarist, Gene G (8JH), who performed brilliantly in assembly on Monday and was awarded a Distinction. It was wonderful to see all the Upper Prep and Senior pupils back in the Auditorium enjoying his performance. Mr Harris, Director of Music

Year 6 enjoyed their film afternoon with the thoughtprovoking 'The Truman Show' and a cookie on the last Friday before half-term. Mr Chapman, Year 6

Safer Internet Day Apart from looking at our Mental Health during the week before half-term, pupils took part in a number of activities in their ICT lessons. The main focus this year for Safer Internet Week has been 'Safer Gaming'. Pupils looked at a range of different strategies on how to stay safe when playing and watching games on the internet. Pupils discussed the importance of following the PEGGI ratings for games as well as reporting instances of bad behaviour online, not just ignoring it. This should encourage better standards and expectations of their online heroes. They also designed their own safety avatar, explaining when they would appear and what kind of advice would they give. Senior pupils used their Python coding skills to create some e-safety adventures, giving the reader different rooms to enter, depending on their choices in a range of scenarios, many managing to programme over a couple of hundred lines of code in their lesson. Having Mental Health week at the same time as Internet Safety week, also brought through the discussion of screen time with a wide range of views held, but all agreeing that screen breaks were very important. As the year 7 pupils wrote: if screenTimeperday >3: print("Go outside and play") Mr Hinds, Head of ICT

Years 2 and 3 Pupils in Years 2 and 3 were delighted to be able to showcase their beautiful work and classrooms to their parents on Wednesday 23rd February.

Year 3 pupils had a great afternoon at Forest School. They saw a pheasant, used binoculars to look for other birds, made and ate pitta pockets and loved exploring the site.

Reception and Year 1 Year 1 pupils had a fantastic day at Godstone Farm. They met lots of different animals including chickens, rabbits, a tortoise and some donkeys. They also fed the pigs and the llamas. They learnt about how to care for the animals and what they like to eat.

Reception pupils have enjoyed being immersed into their new topic of ‘Happily Ever After’! They have been role -playing the different characters, thinking about what roles they play in each story and creating houses out of straw, sticks and bricks just like the Three Little Pigs.

Nursery News The storms over the weekend prevented us from visiting Forest School this week, so Ellie our Forest School Lead came to the Nursery and made some wonderful bird kites which the children enjoyed flying outside in the Nursery Garden. Our topic book this week has been ‘Jasper’s Beanstalk,’ and the children had a great time planting their very own beans in pots. In the cooking lesson they made carrot and apple flapjacks which they enjoyed as their afternoon snack. This ties in with our topic in PSED for this half term, ‘Healthy Me.’ The Gym session this week began with stretching exercises to warm up our bodies ready to tackle the challenges of the obstacle course! Ms Luke, Head of Nursery

World Book Day 2022

We will be celebrating World Book Day in school next week and invite all pupils to come to school dressed as their favourite book character on Friday 4th March.

We do not wish this to be onerous for parents or pupils and costumes can be simple: for example, using items of clothing pupils already have and adding their creative spin. Please may we ask that character choice is age-appropriate and that children are still appropriately dressed for school and weather conditions.

On Thursday, we will have a World Book Day themed lunch provided by our caterers, and on Thursday and Friday various competitions and initiatives will be running throughout the school. Please see the separate emails which have been sent out for more details. Your children will also be bringing home World Book Day tokens which they can use until 27th March 2022.

We are delighted to be able to celebrate World Book Day in school once again and look forward to seeing the children dressed up.

Sports Roundup Our cross-country squad did extremely well at the Highfield Cross Country Event on the last Friday before halfterm. 20 Cranmore pupils competed within their respective age groups (U9s to U12s) and there were approximately 150 runners per age group. I am delighted to say that Freddie W came 1st in the U10s race, Aidan H came 1st in the U12s race, and the U12s team came second overall. After our success in winning both the Dunckley Shield and The Murray Cup at the end of the rugby season, it was fantastic to award the trophies to the respective Captains - Rory B and Bertie W (joint U11 Captains), Jack M (1st XIII Captain) and Ben F (1st XIII ViceCaptain). Jackson B represented Surrey last week at the British Show Jumping Academy Show, Norfolk. His team won the team competition, and he finished 7th individually. The pupils have enjoyed the first week of the official hockey season. Although there aren't quite as many fixtures as our other core sports, the pupils have been extremely positive and engaged during their first few lessons which bodes well for the hockey season ahead.
