21 MARCH 2022 Message from the Headmaster

It has been a wonderful week at school with the pupils immersed in activities, performances and presentations, topped off with an excellent inspection report from the Independent Schools Inspectorate. The Year 4 performance of Plastic Pirates raised awareness about plastic waste and the impact on our oceans. I was impressed with the creativity of the costumes made from recycled materials. The Music department welcomed Glenesk school to a musical workshop before a collaborative performance to parents. It was a highly successful week of sport. Our U11 team were undefeated at the Rosslyn Park Rugby 7s, the U13 hockey sides played superbly well against Hall Grove and Thomas's Battersea and our swimming team won their gala against ACS, Cobham. Our inspection report was a delight to read, and I was thrilled to be able to share it with you this week. The Educational Quality grading of ‘Excellent’ in all areas is a real credit to pupils, staff, parents and governors. I am immensely grateful to everyone for their hard work and incredible contribution to school life at Cranmore. One of my favourite comments from the inspection is, ‘Pupils make an outstanding contribution to the lives of others in the school and the wider community.’ This resonates with some of the fundamentals of education at Cranmore, to nurture pupils who achieve academically but also have outstanding moral awareness and be active supporters in the wider community. Have a lovely weekend. Mr Everitt

Year 7 Trip to Kidzania The Year 7 students visited Kidzania London on Friday 18th March as part of their engagement with National Careers Week. The students participated in a number of immersive activities which were led by industry professionals. They spent around 20 minutes at each ‘work’ station where they carried out jobs, thus enabling them to earn ‘KidZos’, which is Kidzania’s very own currency. This allowed them to develop a sense of what is meant by ‘earning an income’. They also had the freedom to navigate the site within their groups and their conduct was exemplary throughout. I am now very much looking forward to taking the students to Wales in June! Mr Cross, Head of Year 7, Head of History

Year 4 Plastic Pirates Drama Production The Year 4 pupils performed the tale of the ‘Plastic Pirates’ on Wednesday 23rd March to very supportive family members. The story highlights the impact of plastic on our oceans and how the sea creatures, through their united front, manage to change the pirates’ ways and reverse the damage they have done to their underwater health service. The pupils delivered their lines and songs with confidence, conveying some strong characterisation. The recycled costumes were a real highlight of the show. Thank you for all your efforts. Mrs Hanson, Head of Drama

Year 2 Trip to the Roald Dahl Museum The Year 2 pupils had a wonderful day out at the Roald Dahl Museum on Thursday last week. The children were very enthusiastic about the character workshop in particular and were able to adopt the roles of various characters from his books. They learnt so much and have been inspired to write more stories of their own. Mrs Stefano and Mrs Carpenter

This Week’s House Cup Winners

Congratulations to Bowen House in both the Lower Prep and the Upper Prep and Seniors for gaining the highest number of merits this week!

Music News House Music Competition Congratulations to all the Upper Prep and Senior pupils who took part in the House Music Competition last week. The standard was high throughout and many of the performances were linked to this year's theme of 'Character'. I was particularly impressed by those pupils who do not learn an instrument or take singing lessons and yet still prepared a performance to support their House.

The results were as follows:

Winners Tylor 309 points 2nd Place Bowen 307 points 3rd Place Morton 276 points 4th Place Stokes 273 points 5th Place Radford 221 points 6th Place Borelli 131 points House Captain and Vice Captain of winning Tylor House

A brilliant performance by Samuel B on the cello in Monday’s Lower Prep assembly.

Congratulations to this fine young cellist, Colin C (5WL) who performed a Grade 4 piece, 'Latin Nights' by K D Blackwell, with such style during Monday's assembly.

Mr Harris, Director of Music

Lower Prep School Celebrates World Maths Day Year 3 pupils enjoyed a carousel of different activities showing they could apply their Maths skills in everyday situations. They played Mathsopoly, a spin on the familiar game; they solved tangram puzzles and created their own tangram diagrams; they attempted to build the tallest Lego pyramid in 20 minutes; and they used an Excel spreadsheet to enter data and plot a bar chart.

Year 2 pupils loved creating their own Maths hats. They added all their favourite words, shapes and calculations!

Year 1 enjoyed creating shapes using spaghetti and marshmallows, while Reception created 3D robots out of blocks and 3D shapes.

Forest School Adventures Our pupils have enjoyed glorious weather lately at Forest School and activities have included den-building and playing in the mud kitchen for Year 1 pupils and soil investigations linked to their Science curriculum for Year 3.

Nursery News The Nursery children had a lovely time at Forest School this week. They toasted hot cross buns on the open fire with Ellie and participated in an egg hunt. To help the environment, the children made seed bombs for their gardens. There was much excitement as the duckling eggs arrived with one already starting to hatch! In line with our topic of Spring, the children have produced some lovely name writing displayed on our very own blossom tree. Ms Luke, Head of Nursery

Year 3 Science Experiments Year 3 were given the challenge to discover which rocks were permeable and which were impermeable and they devised an experiment to find out. They considered how to conduct a fair test and were very thorough in their observations and recording. Mrs Sinclair

Sports Roundup It has been a very successful week of Sport. Our U11s went undefeated at the Roslyn Park rugby 7s, our U13s were finalists at the Aldro 7s, and our U13s hockey sides did superbly well both on Wednesday against Hall Grove and on Saturday versus Thomas's Battersea. Over 20 members of our cross-country squad ran at the Danes Hill event on Tuesday and over 50 members of our Swim Squad (Year 3 to Year 8) swam in the gala against ACS, Cobham. After many swimming races and with some very close finishes, I am pleased to say Cranmore won with a score of 246 points to 244. Well done, Swim Squad!
