26th APRIL 2021
Message from the Headmaster Dear Parents,
Last Saturday morning the school was a hive of activity as we held pre-season cricket training with 140 pupils taking part. They focused on refining their cricketing skills in preparation for the much anticipated first fixtures of the new term. In addition, the reintroduction of the extracurricular programme provided an array of engaging activities for the pupils to be involved in after school.
I would like to congratulate everyone who took part in the Great Cranmore Bake Off. The photos displayed are just a selection of the many imaginative culinary creations that were baked in recent weeks. Thank you to those who went to incredible efforts in the competition and I know that the donations made to the Catholic Children's Society will be greatly appreciated.
I am delighted we have had so much interest in our Senior school and, as we enter the summer term, our school continues to grow. We will have three form entry in Year 7 and this positive move ensures we will have over 100 pupils at the top of our Senior school for the next academic year.
Finally, the assembly this week highlighted to pupils the importance of teamwork in our Cranmore community. The key aspects of supporting each other, sharing responsibility, building friendships, collaborating and innovating will certainly be of benefit throughout their time in education and beyond.
I hope you all enjoy the long weekend!
Mr Everitt
Year 7 pupils benefit from Study Skills coaching
Year 7 learn new Study Skills with Elevate Education
Year 7 pupils took part in a valuable session on study skills presented by Elevate Education last Friday. This session was particularly memorable as it was the first time they have worked together as a year group since returning from lockdown. The session focused on practical tips that pupils could employ to embed and retrieve their knowledge, with such strategies as mind maps and scan reading. They will also receive follow-up resources to supplement the booklet they received on the day. Mrs Verny-White, who helped supervise the sessions made the following observations: “Reading Skills – Elevate Study Skills training will definitely support the Science curriculum by teaching children to: Identify why you are reading something (Title) Identify the most important facts by reading sub-headings Introduce techniques to skim-read text to find key vocabulary Employ strategies for note-taking: write notes in their own words, using bullet points, Include visual prompts and colour to help them remember facts. Having taught a Year 7 class on Wednesday using textbook resources, I can immediately see the value of this teaching. I would encourage staff to use these strategies with pupils in lessons, as soon as possible to help embed the skills – I shall be trying to do so.”
Feedback from pupils was excellent with 100% providing positive comments – some example below: “I thought it was interesting and it will help me when I have to study and take future exams.” “I would give it 10/10 because of how I learnt much more about revising” “The notes helped me out SO much. They work well for me. No suggestion for improvement, the whole year was well engaged.” “The most important thing I learned today was that I remember images better than words. Great!” Mr Pulford Deputy Head (Academic)

Reception study traditional tales and make a waterproof cloak for Red Riding Hood! This term Reception pupils are learning about different traditional tales. To start our topic, we chose a traditional tale character to represent in our art lesson. We carefully drew our character with oil pastel and then painted a wash on the top. We think they look very effective! We were also challenged to investigate different materials to try and find a material that would be suitable to make a waterproof cloak for Red Riding Hood. We had lots of fun testing different materials using pipettes to drop water on the different materials. We felt like real scientists! Mrs Hobdell and Mrs Stefano, Reception teachers
Cranmore Nursery pupils explore in the garden and at Forest School!
The children in Nursery have been focusing on ‘people who help us ‘ and on ‘transport’ this week.
In the garden they enjoyed their imaginary role play at the ‘building site’.
They have been delighted to see how the tulips they planted have flowered.
At Forest School the children experimented with mixing charcoal and oil to create paint.
They then had fun painting the trees and swinging on the swing.

A Message from our Chaplain A reading from the Gospel of John I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.” The Gospel of the Lord Praise to You Lord Jesus Christ
Jesus is the Good Shepherd In the reading this week we hear how Jesus is the Good Shepherd. At Jesus' last meal He asks Peter to feed his sheep. Jesus is of course our Good Shepherd, the one who protects us from harm, the one who leads us to safety and the one who provides for our needs. And yet we can also easily become like lost sheep, following others the wrong way. In this season of Easter let us learn to listen to Jesus' voice, to follow His call to Holiness and to live in love.
