23 MAY 2022 Message from the Headmaster This week, we were fortunate to host a lecture for our Senior School pupils on the importance of sleep by Mrs Sobey. She imparted her knowledge on the different types and patterns of sleep, how best to increase the quantity and quality of sleep and highlighted the major health benefits to pupils. The Lower Prep music assembly on Wednesday was a delight and I was immensely impressed with the superb performances from some of our youngest pupils. We welcomed Father Stephen to celebrate Ascension Day Mass on Thursday and it was lovely to have parents joining us. I would like to commend the pupils for their exemplary studious approach and focused attitude during their assessments this week. In particular, Year 7 and 8 pupils, who completed their exams in the Sports Hall, had an opportunity to experience a more formal setting in line with what they can expect in public examinations in the future. Our Jubilee celebrations at the end of the week included a Jubilee-themed School Council cupcake sale at break, themed lessons in the morning, a regal menu prepared by the catering staff at lunchtime, street parties and Jubilee fun activities on Friday afternoon. It was an exceptionally enjoyable and fitting celebration. On behalf of all the staff at Cranmore, I wish you a restful half-term. Mr Everitt

Jubilee Celebrations This week, pupils have enjoyed a variety of exciting activities during lessons, a themed lunch, a School Council charity cake sale, an afternoon of House sports and dressing up in red, white and blue!

Jubilee Celebrations

We have been delighted by the response to our Jubilee competitions. The deadline for these has been extended to Monday 6th June to give those who have been busy with exams to get creative over half-term. There are book tokens to be won for the most creative entries!

Summer Assessments This week pupils have been sitting their summer assessments. Whilst these are not quite ‘end of year’ examinations – we still have another half term! – they do represent an opportunity for pupils to display the progress that they have made over the course of the academic year. Pupils in Years 4 to 6 have taken these assessments in the comfort of their form rooms, whilst Senior pupils, in Years 7 and 8, have had the more formal setting of the Sports Hall. This setting provides an excellent taste of the experience of external examinations and is therefore an important part of the preparation process as pupils move towards the GSCE years. Well done to all pupils for their diligent preparation and hard work throughout the year. We look forward to providing high quality feedback after half-term. There has been a Jubilee theme to lessons on Thursday and Friday, with further Jubilee-themed House activities providing some welcome relief on Friday afternoon. Mr Pulford

This Week’s House Cup Winners

Congratulations to Radford House in the Lower Prep and Morton House in the Upper Prep and Seniors for gaining the highest number of merits this week!

Music News Earlier this term, we were thrilled to invite the Benedetti Foundation to Cranmore, led by world-class violinist, Nicola Benedetti. Pupils from Cranmore, St Teresa’s and five other local schools, were invited to attend this fabulous day of string playing. The Benedetti Foundation brought along a number of professional string players and young ambassadors and worked alongside the pupils in workshops throughout the day. We were all treated to a short performance by Nicola Benedetti and her staff at the start of the day which was incredibly exciting. At the end of the event, parents were treated to a short performance by the pupils who attended.

This was a truly inspirational day, not only for the pupils, but for myself and the staff who also attended. It was wonderful to hear live music in the Auditorium once again after such a long period of relative silence. My thanks go to Nicola Benedetti and her Foundation staff for their amazing work and playing.

Mr Harris, Director of Music

We had the pleasure of listening to six performers for our Lower Prep Music Assembly on Wednesday 25th May. We were incredibly proud of how they all played with such confidence on their chosen instruments in front of their friends and families. I know they will have inspired many of the children in the audience to learn to play an instrument too. Well done Niko R, Harry M, Toby M, Max C, Rafferty C-D and Sotaro T. Miss Gallop

Year 2 Evacuee Day The Year 2 pupils thoroughly enjoyed their Evacuee Day. They were able to experience some games, dances and art, all linked to our World War 2 topic. They particularly enjoyed trying some of the typical foods which were consumed during World War II. Mrs Stefano and Mrs Carpenter

Nursery News It was another busy week in Nursery last week. The Reception classes came to visit us and had a lovely time in our garden. We are all very excited about our special Jubilee Celebration this Friday and the children have been very busy engaging in different crafts in preparation for the big event! Ms Luke, Head of Nursery

Sports Roundup The Sport Scholars and those who attend the Year 7 and Year 8 weekly performance session were very fortunate to have a fantastic seminar this week entitled 'The Importance of Sleep'. Cranmore parent Mrs Sobey presented about all things sleep, including different types of sleep, how to increase the quantity and quality of sleep, and viewing sleep as everyone's very own 'superpower. ' Thank you very much Mrs Sobey for giving up your time and giving a superb talk on a very important subject.

Our Year 7 and 8 rowers had glorious weather at Walton RC last Wednesday. It is brilliant to see how much this group has developed and all the pupils should take credit for their hard work. Cricket matches have taken place across the school against teams including Aldro, Northcote Lodge, Cranleigh and Donhead. In terms of tennis, with more matches happening most days, the number of pupils that have represented the school is close to 100. Thank you, Head of Racquets, Mr O'Neill, for his diligent organisation.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

Ascension

Thought for the week: How will you spread the Word of Jesus? Prayer for Ascension Day Dear Lord Jesus Christ, right before your Ascension into Heaven you told your apostles to be your witnesses to the ends of the earth upon receiving the Holy Spirit. May I be similarly inspired to spread your Gospel message in word and deed, according to your will for me. Amen REFLECTION Yesterday we gathered to celebrate the Ascension, the ascent of Jesus Christ into Heaven on the 40th day after his Resurrection. The Ascension is the completion of the Easter mysteries of Jesus’ life, passion, death and resurrection, and it is the final step before the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

Let us Pray:

“The Feast of the Ascension tells us that Jesus, although He ascended to Heaven to dwell gloriously at the right hand of the Father, is still and is always among us: this is the source of our strength, our perseverance and our joy.” Pope Francis

Our Father Hail Mary 1 minute silence In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
