24 JANUARY 2022 Message from the Headmaster On Monday, our guest speaker on Climate Change, Michelle Horsfield, gave a thought-provoking lecture in the auditorium to the Year 7 and 8 pupils from Cranmore and St Teresa’s. She spoke from experience having attended the United Nations conference and COP26 and outlined a ‘select’ strategy for us to consider when making individual and collective choices for a better future. Dylan in Year 6 gave a wonderful rendition of Chim Chim Cher-ee from Mary Poppins in our assembly on Monday. A reminder to all our budding musicians that the closing date for ABRSM exams is Monday. It was wonderful to meet parents at the EYFS coffee morning on Wednesday just before I had to compose myself as I was scheduled to be rigorously interviewed by our Reception classes. I was questioned on how I spent my time and if I liked making lots of decisions. The pupils even managed to convince me to take them all to my office for a tour! They were an absolute delight to spend time with. Pupils excelled in sport this week with some notable achievements in the Surrey Schools’ cross-country competition and the Surrey swimming competition in Guildford. Our pupils were also victorious in both squash and badminton against local school RGS and there were impressive performances across all year groups in rugby. Finally, I would like to wish the teams involved in the Murray Cup, the rugby equivalent to the Henkes Shield in football, the very best of luck against Rokeby this weekend. Mr Everitt

Reception interview Mr Everitt This week, our Reception children interviewed Mr Everitt. They thought of questions to find out what it was like being a Headmaster of a school. The children asked why Mr Everitt enjoys his role and even what sports and hobbies he likes. The children then got to explore Mr Everitt’s office! Mrs Green and Mrs Prothero Reception

Anxiety Workshops Following Caroline Penney’s parent workshop last Thursday evening on ‘Overcoming your child’s worries and fears’, Upper Prep and Senior pupils took part in workshops explaining what anxiety is and how to deal with it. As you can see from the photos, the children, were all involved and learnt some techniques on how to deal with anxiety. Ms Schembri, Assistant Head

Cranmore Reading Challenge We are excited to announce the launch of this year’s Cranmore Reading Challenge. Who is it for? All pupils in Years 4 to 7 are invited to sign up, but the challenge is optional. Pupils can read these books as their school library book. Copies of the books are available to borrow from our school library. What does it involve? Pupils will read five carefully selected books, all of which have been published in 2021. This year's books are: The Boy Who Made Everyone Laugh by Helen Rutter The Valley of Lost Secrets by Lesley Parr Twitch by M. G. Leonard Utterly Dark and the Face of the Deep by Philip Reeve The Unexpected Tale of Bastien Bonlivre by Clare Povey

How long is the challenge running? Pupils will have until the end of the summer half term holiday (Monday 6th June) to read the books. What are the benefits of taking part? Pupils will receive five merits for each book completed. At the end of the challenge, they will receive a bronze certificate for three books read, a silver certificate for four books read and a gold certificate for five books read. In addition, the pupils who read all five books will receive a supermerit and will be able to vote for their favourite book. We are looking forward to discovering which book will be our pupils' favourite. Mrs Morgan, Librarian

School Council News

The new school council reps for the Lower Prep School have been elected. They are: Molly W (RLP), Blair B (RCG), Henriette B (1SH), Oscar W (1AB), Blake C (2JC), Elijah D (2NS), Timi S (3CS) and James H (3RF). They have already had a couple of meetings with Mrs Carpenter in which they have discussed ways they can make a difference in our Lower Prep School. Our Upper Prep and Senior School Council met this week. We discussed actions which had been taken since the last meeting following requests from pupils. These were a water polo club (currently on offer to Year 6, 7 and 8), basketball nets on the fence on the Astro for use during break times, and plans for a fundraising event details to follow soon! The pupils shared suggestions which they had brought from their classes. As always, there were plenty of thoughtful ideas. Mrs Spooner, School Council

Party time for Year 3 Year 3 had a fantastic time at St Teresa’s on Wednesday afternoon. The children enjoyed playing various games, taking part in a snowball fight and making some winter themed decorations. Miss Freeman and Ms Sinclair, Year 3

Music News

A polite request from the Music Department The Music Department would be very grateful if pupils taking part in rehearsals before school arrive as promptly as possible ready for an 8am start. As you can imagine, it can be very disruptive to a rehearsal if pupils arrive late. Thank you. Mr Harris, Director of Music

Bravo to this fine young singer, Dylan C, who gave a lovely performance of ‘Chim Chim Cher-ee’ during Monday’s assembly.

African sunsets by Year 2 Year 2 have enjoyed creating their own African sunset pictures. This artwork is linked to our topic this half term, Kenya. In Art, we learnt about John Ndambo who is an artist from Kenya. He likes to create paintings of African landscapes and the Masai tribes. We then looked at different interpretations of African sunsets. The children learnt the skill of creating a wash and mixing colours with paint to create the background. They then drew silhouettes of what they might see in the Savannah including acacia trees. Mrs Carpenter and Mrs Stefano, Year 2

Nursery News In Pre-Nursery, the children have been learning all about safari animals and Africa. They even made their own binoculars for their safari walk around the grounds of Cranmore. The Nursery children have been focusing on the different shapes in our environment. In their cooking session, they enjoyed making different shape biscuits then eating them for their snack. Ms Luke, Head of Nursery
