A fabulous performance by xVoCollective at Cranmore Live

28th February 2020 Dear Parents I was delighted to see our pupils form the Guard of Honour at the Harlequins game and the heavy rain did not dampen their spirits. I am sure you will join me in offering congratulations to Mr Everitt who played a vital role in Ireland’s comfortable win over England at the weekend. No, I am certainly not mistaken. I am, of course, referring to the Irish Legends match which was played at the Stoop last Saturday evening, a far more significant fixture than Sunday’s game! As ever, this edition has lots of news on recent events. However, the children are especially looking forward to next Thursday when we shall celebrate World Book Day — I am sure there will be many impressive costumes on display to represent a myriad of characters from literature. I shall be out of school from Tuesday afternoon until Friday as I shall be involved in an ISI inspection of a school. Yours sincerely

Michael Connolly

Junior News Author and Illustrator Chloe Inkpen visits Reception to Year 2 Children in Reception to Year 2 were spellbound by visiting author, Chloe Inkpen, who has co-written several books with her father, Mick Inkpen. After giving some background on her writing and illustrating, she told the story of Mrs Blackhat and invited the children to join in with words and actions. They fully embraced the task and their acting was very convincing! Chloe then demonstrated how she draws the character of Mrs Blackhat and some volunteers were invited to add details to it. It was wonderful to have such a captivating author with us for the day and many children left the room inspired to write their own stories. You can visit her website (www.chloeinkpen.com) for more information about Chloe and her books. Mrs Watkinson, School Librarian

Junior News Year 2 visit to the Rural Life Centre On 14th February, Year 2 had a fantastic day at the Rural Life Centre in Farnham. They participated in many different activities linked to World War Two, including putting out a fire from an incendiary bomb, experiencing life in a school as an evacuee, playing 1940s playground games, trying out Morrison and Anderson shelters and eating rationed food. They also enjoyed exploring the museum.

Junior News Year 2 study the weather Year 2 started their weather topic this week. The whole year group carried out an experiment to find out why rain happens when clouds fill with water.

Year 3 make pancakes for Shrove Tuesday Year 3 made Scotch Pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. It was an English lesson; the learning objectives were to identify imperative verbs in the recipe and to follow instructions carefully. The children had a lot of fun and they enjoyed eating their delicious pancakes.

Senior News Year 6 Quiz Afternoon Year 6 finished a busy first half of the year by having their Quiz Afternoon in the Hospitality Suite on the Friday before half term. Using 'surfaces' the children participated in teams in different quizzes, breaking half way for refreshments. It was great fun and a just reward for all their hard work over the past few months.

Year 5 models of ‘places in town’ Our Year 5 children created some fantastic models of ’places in town’ for their French homework. Their brief was to make and label a model of somewhere in a town or make a town map and label it with places. We even had an online Minecraft version sent to us! Mme Buckle

Senior News Year 8 work on The Hound of the Baskervilles

As part of their study of The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, pupils in 8CD have created their own giant front page of a newspaper from the 1890s. On it, they speculate about the untimely demise of Sir Charles Baskerville, the legend of the spectral hound which is said to haunt Dartmoor and the involvement of Sherlock Holmes in the case.

Senior News Year 6 Drama pupils re-enacting Sir Francis Drake’s journey around the world Year 6 pupils shared their ‘in-role writing’ as crew members on board Sir Francis Drake’s Golden Hind ship that circumnavigated the world. They used their imagination and empathy to narrate the experiences of this terrifying journey which took place from 1577 to 1580. Mrs Hanson

Sports News Sports Report

On the Wednesday before half term, our 1st VII rugby team featured at the St John's Beaumont Sevens Festival. On a beautifully sunny afternoon on the Beaumont Flats, the squad had their first outing of the season. A combination of quick handling and mazy running saw Cranmore top the group. The second stage proved a lot more competitive as we came up against tougher opponents. It was great to see the group develop throughout the afternoon and learn quickly about the different version of the sport. Well done to all for their persistence and determination.

Members of our cross-country team competed at Highfield in their annual event on the last day of term. Every Cranmore competitor ran very well with the whole squad consistently cheering and encouraging each other. L. Wilkinson and A. Wood managed to pick up medals in their respective age categories, both up against over 100 other runners in their races.

The first day of the half term holiday saw over 250 people from Cranmore attend the Harlequins versus London Irish Premiership match at the Twickenham Stoop. Despite 'Storm Dennis' making an appearance, the children performed a superb 'Guard of Honour' both pre-game and at half-time. Thank you to everyone who supported the event.

The hockey season has started superbly well with our Year 6 playing a whole year group fixture against Parkside. Despite this being Cranmore's first set of matches, the four teams went unbeaten throughout the afternoon. Well done all!
