Cranmore Chronicle 29 March 2019 Editor: Mrs S Connolly
Dear Parents This is the final edition of what has been another busy and productive term for our children. I suspect some of you might be tiring of my constant refrain that we need to get back to thinking about education in this country rather than focus too much on exams. It is my deepest wish that all of our pupils at Cranmore will develop a profound love of learning which will not only sustain them through their teenage years but will become a habit for life. I was most fortunate to have an inspirational teacher in my final year of primary school who convinced all of us that education was a genuine path to life-enhancing experiences. With that in mind, I have tried to maintain the habit of serious study and I have completed a degree in every decade since the1970s. I have benefitted from some remarkable tutors including the eminent philosopher, Sir Roger Scruton, who was my personal supervisor for my MA last year. The graduation ceremony was last Friday and it was apposite to be congratulated by a former distinguished headmaster, Sir Anthony Seldon. I first met him many years ago when he was appointed to Wellington College and he is now doing an equally marvellous job as a university Vice-Chancellor. I wish you and your family a happy holiday – Shelagh and I shall be off to the ski slopes tomorrow.

Sponsored Swim This month, every child in the Junior Department participated in the Junior Department Sponsored Swim. Children in LP and MP swam widths across the pool and children in UP and Form 1, swam lengths of the pool. Many children in Form 1 managed to swim 40 lengths which is a fantastic achievement. Whilst swimming the children were also earning valuable sponsorship money from family and friends in aid of our chosen charity, Cherry Trees. This is a small charity in East Clandon, providing home-from-home specialist short breaks for children and young adults aged 0-19 with a range of complex disabilities. Cherry Trees is a lifeline for the families of more than a hundred children and young people who are regularly cared for there, whether it be after school for a few hours, a weekend or even a couple of weeks stay. Cherry Trees is a unique place, providing professional care in a safe, stimulating and fun environment, where every child is valued for who they are.
At Cranmore we are proud to support Cherry Trees. We have been overwhelmed by your and your family and friends’ generosity in supporting your child in this sponsored swim and now all the contributions have been received we can announce that the total raised is……….
£6000 Thank you all for your generosity to this wonderful charity which makes such a difference to families in our local community. Fiona Nicholson Head of Junior Department

Sports Focus *Book places for the Easter Camps held at Cranmore ASAP* Despite being the final week of the Easter term, sport at Cranmore certainly didn’t ease up. The last hockey matches of the season took place across the years against schools including St Thomas’s Clapham, Parkside, Shrewsbury House, and Feltonfleet. Out of these 14 final matches Cranmore notched up 10 wins in total, which only again confirms an impressive season (see SOCS for match scores). It is pleasing to see that hockey under the stewardship of Mr Down (Head of Hockey) is clearly a sport at Cranmore which is developing strongly.
It was the chance of the Upper Preps to represent the school for the first time last week in a whole year group U7s rugby fixture against Downsend. The matches were evenly contested and it was very pleasing to see great sportsmanship from such young players. The rest of the rugby season also came to a close, with final 7s festivals for both the U12s (Shrewsbury House) and U13s (Roslyn Park Nationals). The rugby season has been an impressive one at Cranmore with all the teams across the school showing they can be competitive. Furthermore, it is the style of rugby and the depth shown across the whole year groups which has been most noticeable. Mr Phillips’s (Head of Rugby) organisation, passion, and expertise of the sport has certainly paid off with another superb rugby season. In other sport, Cranmore had a convincing win over Downsend at squash, victorious in all 12 matches played last Thursday hosted here at the school. On Tuesday, three members of the golf squad represented Cranmore in a Prep schools tournament organised by Reeds School at Burhill Golf Club. Eight schools entered and, with some great golf played especially on the latter holes, Cranmore picked up a well deserved second place. The Junior Sports' Exhibition took place yesterday with various sports taking place across all the Junior Years. The afternoon turned out to be a fantastic occasion for the children, especially having the England Womens Sevens Rugby Team present both in a coaching capacity and having their own training session. Well done to all the children for participating so well and thank you to all the parents for supporting the event.
