Cranmore Chronicle 3 May 2019 Editor: Mrs S Connolly

Dear Parents I firmly believe that the new partnership with St Teresa’s School represents an exciting development for Cranmore. There are many benefits, not least the provision of high quality education for boys and girls across the entire 2-18 age range. Next term I shall begin my 40th year in education having spent most of that time as a Headmaster. Therefore, I think it would be the right time to retire rather than continue with the full implementation of this programme. However, I know you will share my delight that Barry Everitt, who has been a real asset at Cranmore, will ensure we have a seamless transition. I must thank Paul Hodgson, supported by Barry, for giving us such a remarkable experience at the London Irish match last week. It really was a fantastic day and I am sure the boys and girls will treasure their memories of the occasion for years to come. Staying with sport, it was a real joy to see Miss Gallop in the Marathon last Sunday. Standing at the side, Shelagh & I cheered her on as she passed the 35 Km mark whilst she looked as if it was a gentle jog. I was truly inspired and I have entered the ballot for the 2020 one……..I shall discover my fate in October when they announce the lists. Yours sincerely Michael Connolly

Information

On Wednesday May 8th 2019 at 6pm, Worth-It will be leading a workshop for Cranmore Parents on 'Developing resilience and wellbeing in children.' Worth-It workshops for parents provide proactive early support that encourages the development of wellbeing in children and young people through the provision of ideas, tips and self-help strategies that parents can use in the home and as a family. The workshop will give parents valuable space to reflect on family life along with practical, evidence-based tools and strategies that can be easily integrated into home life to build resilience, wellbeing and positive mental health in their children.

What will the workshop cover? Key elements participants will explore include: 

Defining wellbeing and resilience

The benefits of positive relationships for wellbeing and resilience

Developing emotional awareness and the benefits of positive emotions

Developing resilient thinking skills

Using a strengths-based approach to develop resilience

Helping your child develop their strengths to maximise their success

This approach to working with parents to support the mental health of children is underpinned by Positive Psychology, mental health in school’s literature and advice from the Department of Health and Department for Education. Ms J Schembri Assistant Head

Second Hand Shop Newsletter Just to let you know that, now the Cricket season is upon us, we have a great selection of cricket wear to choose from. We also have a fantastic selection of House Polo tops that the children are required to wear for Sports Day. So why not get ahead of the game and buy one now as we sell out very quickly in the weeks before Sports Day! SMALLER SIZES OF UNIFORM:We will once again be opening for a couple of afternoons in June for the new starters in Lower Prep through to Form 1. So if you have your son or daughter’s old smaller uniform sitting at home, now is the perfect time to sort it out to either sell or donate to us. We are low on stock of girls’ uniform items as these always sell very quickly. Please check the Cranmore website/CPA/ 2nd Hand Shop for guidance on how to sell your items. NEW VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED:Sadly our time at Cranmore is coming to an end as Oliver leaves the 6th Form this coming Summer after many happy years at Cranmore. So, after many years of volunteering, I won’t be running the Second Shop anymore from September. The shop needs some new volunteers to keep it going! I am pleased to announce that Suzanne Hoddinott will take over the running of the shop and Suzanne Roberts will continue to do the accounts. You will still see the friendly face of Carol Finlayson on a Friday morning but we still need more volunteers! Being part of the Second Hand Shop is very rewarding as you meet fellow parents at the school and you are doing your bit for the Cranmore CPA, which is great thing to do! If you have 1 hour free after drop-off on a Friday then this would be perfect for you. We are open every Friday from 8-9am during term time. If you are interested in volunteering, then please get in touch and we can talk about the role more fully. A COUPLE OF HOUSEKEEPING RULES:We pride ourselves in being there for you, to help you and we give our time freely and happily. May we please ask that a couple of housekeeping rules are observed going forward.

We ONLY accept payment by cash or cheque. We have NO facility for taking payment by credit card- sorry. We do however require payment! Unfortunately we are getting an increasing amount of people expecting to take items away without payment being made at the point of sale. Please treat us like you would in any other shop and bring in cash or cheque to cover the cost of your purchase. Thank you very much. Any questions or queries about the shop, please message me and I will be more than happy to answer them. Sports Focus We kicked off our cricket season on the first day back of term with our 1st XI playing against a touring club side from Amsterdam, VOC Cricket Club. It was fantastic to host such a friendly and well supported team. Considering this was Cranmore's first match of the season, the side got off to a great start with a very good performance. The high standard of Cranmore cricket continued with whole year group fixtures against Danes Hill for the U10s on Saturday and U9s on Monday. From the nine matches played, Cranmore managed to win eight. Tuesday was the start of the PT Trophy against Rokeby, an annual all school event which is played throughout the week. We are wishing every player and Cranmore team the best of luck in retaining this prestigious Trophy. Also on Tuesday, members of our golf squad played against Coldicott at our associated club, The Drift Golf Club. It was a fantastic afternoon of golf enjoyed by everyone. Of course last Saturday, the London Irish rugby trip took place involving over 400 people from Cranmore. No fewer than 180 Cranmore children performed the longest guard of honour that London Irish have managed to accommodate. It was fantastic to see the children (and parents) enjoy the exciting rugby match and the overall occasion. Thank you all for supporting the event. On to the next one!.... The Cranmore Golf Day - please see flyer. Sunday 9th June - pm - The Drift Golf Club - 9 or 18 holes - to register golfers and for payment details golfday@cranmoreprep.co.uk

London Irish outing where Cranmore pupils were guard of honour at final home match of the season—a super family event

Alexander H. was a member of the National Youth Boys' Choir along with Monty L. who joined forces with National Youth Choir at the opening concert of the 2019 'Discovery' season at Nottingham Royal Concert Hall. The most poignant piece of the evening was “Messe de Notre Dame by Guillaume de Machaut sung whilst the cathedral was still in flames.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory rehearsals started this week on Monday at 8am and 4pm in C1 and the schedules have been sent home. These are on the VLE and Drama Noticeboard as helpful reminders. All pupils must attend the relevant times, be punctual and learn their lines. Looking forward to a successful show!
