31 JANUARY 2022 Message from the Headmaster We had a lot to celebrate and be proud of this week in school. On Tuesday, pupils had the opportunity to celebrate Chinese New Year, the Year of the tiger. An important part of this celebration centres around food and the dining room was suitably decorated and some delicious cuisine was served at lunch time. There have been some incredible performances in skiing and on the sports fields too this week. On Wednesday, we enjoyed a heart-warming assembly presented by pupils in 2NS about our world and how much there is to enjoy. The important message was that it is vital that we care for and protect it. The children concluded the event by performing ‘What A Wonderful World’, by Louis Armstrong, in sign language. I also thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Year 2 classrooms to see the wonderful displays and costume creations and to share stories about different customs and traditions. In the weeks and months ahead, I am looking forward to hearing about our participation in musical festivals and watching the Spring Soiree, assemblies and workshops that the music department have scheduled. I have been very encouraged by the enthusiasm of Upper Prep and Senior pupils auditioning for this year’s summer production Bugsy Malone. Rehearsal schedules and other information are on the VLE. Please do continue to support our actors to familiarise themselves with the script and learn their lines. Good luck to all those pupils who have taken on the Cranmore reading challenge. There is still time to sign up if your child would like to take part. Mr Everitt

French Fashion Year 4 have been busy designing their new French summer fashion collection in their lessons. I think we may have some budding fashion designers in the making! Ms Schembri

Chinese New Year Our pupils enjoyed a Chinese themed lunch on Tuesday to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Our pupils impressed us with their use of chopsticks! Thank you to our catering team for such a delicious lunch.

Music News The Cranmore Music Staff are currently delivering over 200 individual singing and instrumental lessons each week. It’s wonderful to see the children here enjoying their singing and playing so much. Although we have a healthy number of pupils learning orchestral instruments, we are always looking to attract more children to learn the bassoon or oboe. These are very rewarding instruments to play and we are very fortunate to have two excellent teachers of them here at Cranmore. Any child interested in starting one of these instruments should contact myself or Mrs Thornton as soon as possible so that a taster session can be arranged. The Music Department is aiming to run the following events in the next few months: Godalming Festival The Orchestra and Wind Band will be performing at this festival on Thursday 10th March. Although we are still awaiting the exact performance times, parents of the pupils involved should expect this to take place around 5.30pm. More details to follow. Jubilee Choir Workshop Afternoon On the very same day, Thursday 10th March, the Jubilee Choir will be participating in a very special workshop at the specialist Yehudi Menuhin school. More details will be sent out to the parents of the pupils involved. Music Assembly On Wednesday 23rd March, the Cranmore Singers, Junior Chamber Choir and Training Strings will be performing in the LP Music Assembly at 8.45am. Spring Soiree This exciting concert is due to take place on Wednesday 30th March at 7pm in the Auditorium and will feature the following school ensembles and choirs: • • • • • • • • • •

Jubilee Choir Senior Chamber Choir Bel Canto Orchestra Wind Band Flute Choir Saxophone Group Brass Group Chamber Strings Training Strings

This concert will finish around 8pm. Although we hope to invite parents to watch the on-site events listed above, we will follow the health and safety guidance at the time and advise parents accordingly.

Year 2 study Kenya

Year 2 have been busy making their own Kenyan leaflets learning skills of researching and making notes then using headings, contents and bullet points to present their information. The pupils also enjoyed learning about the Massai tribal customs and traditions in Kenya. They designed and created their own necklaces using colours that symbolise important values. Mrs Carpenter and Ms Stefano, Year 2

Cranmore Reading Challenge

The Cranmore Reading Challenge was launched to pupils in Year 4 –7 this week. Anyone interested in taking part should speak to either Mrs Morgan, our Librarian, or their English teacher.

Sports Roundup It has been another busy week regarding our rugby season with two highlights being The Murray Cup on Saturday and our U11s playing KCJS and Kings House on Thursday. The Murray Cup is an annual rugby event between Cranmore and Rokeby with this year being hosted by our opponents. All year groups from U9s upwards have been involved in the matches with the final fixtures having taken place on Saturday (U13s has been postponed until Monday). Out of these 7 matches that took place on a superb morning, Cranmore won all 7 putting us in a commanding lead going into the last 3. KCJS and Kings House visited us on Thursday to play in no fewer than 15 matches on the Henderson Fields. There was a great atmosphere with plenty of positive rugby on show and it was great to see Cranmore U11s win the majority of the matches. Skiers from our Ski Squad performed very well in a recent qualifier for the National School Snowsports Association at Aldershot. Freddie B (Year 6) won the U12s, Samuel B (Year 3) won the U8s, and he was the second fastest boy aged 12 or under. Rafferty C-D, Henry B and Mathias P all made the podiums too. A great result for Cranmore all round. Huge congratulations to following boys who have made the ESSKIA Ski Squads: U14 Max B Will B U12 Freddie B Theo T Rocco H (Res) Mr Hodgson Director of Sport

Nursery News The children made bird feeders at Forest School this week and talked about the different birds in our environment, before participating in a bird hunt. We have been learning all about Chinese New Year and the children have been engaging in imaginary play in our Chinese restaurant, exploring coloured noodles with chopsticks and sampling freshly made egg fried rice pancakes and cucumber! In Pre-Nursery Mrs Chan and the children prepared vegetables and noodles for sensory play. The grand finale was a dragon dance in the Gym with all the children. Ms Luke Head of Nursery
