28 FEBRUARY 2022 Message from the Headmaster
There have been many activities taking place throughout this week at Cranmore. We began thinking about the importance of Lent, what we would sacrifice during this period and how we can help impact the lives of others. We continued with the liturgical theme on Ash Wednesday when Father Stephen Dingley came to Cranmore to celebrate our School Mass. There was a great sense of unity through being able to celebrate the occasion together and I would like to thank both the parents and the governors who attended and celebrated the Mass with us. Pupils in 2JC welcomed their parents to their class assembly on Tuesday on the value of ‘Character’. Their celebration of their own strengths of character and the importance of being honest was incredibly positive and wonderful to see. Thank you to our catering team for preparing a book-themed lunch for World Book Day on Thursday. Well done to pupils and staff for ending the week creatively by coming to school on Friday dressed as their favourite book characters. Finally, a special mention to Imogen H in Year 1 for winning her class event at the Godalming Performing Arts Festival. Wishing you all a restful weekend. Mr Everitt
World Book Day Activities
This week, we have celebrated our love of reading on World Book Day with book-themed activities throughout the school, including ‘Guess Who Is Coming to Lunch’, ‘Guess the Teacher’ and a scavenger hunt in the library, a delicious book-themed lunch and many other activities during lessons. We are passionate about nurturing our pupils’ love of reading and were delighted to see such an enthusiastic response to the competitions and activities which have taken place. Watch this space for photos of the pupils’ wonderful costumes in next week’s edition!
Trip to Guildford Borough Council Chambers
Some members of the Politics Club visited the Guildford Borough Council Chamber on Thursday to take part in a referendum on ‘Should Ukraine be allowed be join NATO?’ The boys proved to be extremely knowledgeable about the topic and mentioned several excellent points. They then had a vote on the issue. The group also learnt how the system works on voting day. They were shown how the voting slips work, voting in a booth and putting them into a sealed box, as well as how all the papers are collated and the results declared. Many thanks to Joss Bigmore, John, Elaine and Maddy who all helped organise the event. The boys had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Mr O’Neill
This week’s House Cup winners
Congratulations to Radford House in the Lower Prep and Tylor House in the Upper Prep and Seniors for gaining the highest number of merits this week!
French activities in Years 4, 5 and 6
Year 6 French The pupils in Year 6 have created a poster in French describing their favourite French-speaking sports personality including their nationality, spoken languages, where they were born, the sport they play and information about their families. Well done Year 6, you have produced some beautiful work. Also, we have been practising our restaurant skills.
Year 5 French Breakfast at St Teresa’s On Tuesday 8th February, Year 5 visited St Teresa’s to participate in French conversation whilst enjoying a traditional French breakfast. All pupils thoroughly enjoyed the croissants and pains au chocolat.
Year 4 pupils bake madeleines Year 4 had a busy week in their French lessons, firstly learning about popular French, Spanish and German cakes and on Monday morning they had the opportunity to make French madeleines. As you can see, the pupils had a lot of fun! Fun fact! According to one story, the name "Madeleine" was given to the cakes by Louis XV to honour his father in-law's cook Madeleine Paulmier.
Miss Ebdy, Head of Modern Foreign Languages
Lower Prep News
Linked to their topic of ‘Instructions’ Year 3 pupils made pancakes today, following a recipe carefully. They enjoyed mixing the ingredients, choosing the toppings and eating them!
Success at Godalming for Year 1 pupil!
3RF filled their marble jar and chose a Pyjama Disco party! As you can see, great fun was had by all!
Imogen H in 1SH entered the Godalming Performing Arts Festival at the weekend in the verse speaking competition. She had to recite two poems. She did a fantastic job and won her class! Congratulations, Imogen!
Year 2’s assembly about our school value of ‘Character’
Our assembly was about the school value we are focusing on this year: 'Character'. The children identified their own strengths of character and made this beautiful rainbow. Each child wore something which made them unique and shared stories of people who have inspired them. We acted out the story of "The boy who cried wolf", sharing the message of how important it is to be honest. The children loved singing 'True Colours' and thinking about how we are God’s people and how He guides us to develop a good Christian character. Mrs Carpenter
Nursery News In Pre-Nursery this week the children have been learning all about growing and planted their very own tomato seeds! They also had a lovely time with Mrs Thornton in their Music session learning the words to the Gingerbread Man song, using the interactive board to support their learning. Mrs Thornton also taught them a new song about a seed growing. The Nursery children in their French lesson have now learnt to count to 10! They have been looking at signs of Spring and how things grow from seed. They also planted some Cosmos seeds and enjoyed creating their own Daffodil pictures. The highlight of the week for all the children was making pancakes, flipping them in the pan and choosing their toppings to eat as a tasty afternoon snack. Ms Luke, Head of Nursery
Sports Roundup This last week has been one of the busiest for sport since the beginning of the academic year. We have competed in four sports including hockey, cross-country, rugby, and swimming. The latter was part of hosting the IAPS Regionals on Wednesday which proved a huge success. Thank you to Head of Swimming, Mrs Calpin, and the rest of the swimming teachers for organising and delivering a fantastic event. 33 hockey matches have been played since last Friday. Our Years 7 & 8 won all 6 matches against Danes Hill and our U11s won 4 and drew 2. Year 8 pupil Oliver W won the U13s Worth Cross Country with both our U11s and U13s teams finishing second. This included many of our U12s running in the year group above. The Scholarship and the Performance session concentrated on cricket and athletic development this week and Year 7 & 8 PE consisted of racquets.
