Our visit from author Vashti Hardy

4th October 2019 Dear Parents We were delighted to welcome many schools to our football tournament last Saturday. The quality of football was most impressive but, more than that, several spectators commented on how it was all conducted with the right sporting spirit. At a time when we regularly see incidents of some poor behaviour from professionals on TV, it was heartening to see how well all these young players were engaged in a competitive tournament with such exemplary conduct. Of course, as ever, the Henderson Fields were in pristine condition. We must thank Ashley Smith, our groundsman who does such a fantastic job for us and he has now completed 30 years’ service to Cranmore, a remarkable testament to his commitment. Yours sincerely, Michael Connolly

Today Mel and George from Wintershall visited Cranmore and delivered a wonderful assembly to the Senior Department. They responded to the pupils’ excellent questions and some of our pupils are now keen to act out other stories from the Bible.

School Council elections have been taking place in the Senior department. The newly elected members are looking forward to their first meeting next week.

Book Week Book Week has been a great success, with pupils involved in numerous activities, including our author visit on Friday, the Book Fair, the ‘Who Is Reading?’ competition, speed-dating a book and origami bookmark-making. It has been fantastic to see such enthusiasm for reading throughout the school.

A very inspiring visit by author Vashti Hardy took place on Friday 27th September for Years 4 to 7, with talks, map-making workshops and even some dressing up!

The library has been very busy this week with the Book Fair, the ‘Who Is Reading?’ competition and other activities, including origami bookmark-making.

Senior News The European Day of Languages: Thursday 26th September To celebrate the European Day of Languages, Years 2 to 6 were given the opportunity to take part in the Junior Language Challenge 2019. We currently have a fantastic team of 20 students playing games in Portuguese. This competition will raise money for the Onebillion Charity. If you would like to enter, it is not too late to join our team!

Cultural quizzes for Years 4 to 8 are also available on the VLE under ‘European Day of Languages’. It is a fantastic way to develop cultural awareness and to learn a few facts about European countries.

Years 6 and 7 from Cranmore and St Teresa’s enjoyed an interactive French workshop about the famous book ‘Les Trois Mousquetaires’, written by Alexandre Dumas. Many students acted out different parts with enthusiasm: Louis XIII, D’Artagnan, Arthos, Portos, Aramis and the bearded man, to name a few. They were absolutely amazing! I would like to share two quotes with you, which reinforce the spirit of this European Day of Languages: “Monolinguism can be cured.” (Motto of the language website Linguascope) “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.” (Nelson Mandela)

Ms Nadège Meneghin, Head of Languages

A few quotes from our Year 6 students:

“I loved the three musketeers play. Seth was the greatest musketeer of all time, he even shouted when he said his lines. I enjoyed chanting a lot. It was an amazing play!” Ben J, Year 6

“It was very funny, exciting and crazy. It was a very good idea to hire the workshop to do the brilliant performance. It taught us a lot of French words and it was very good acting. It also told us about a very exciting new story. It was really good that the children got to take part and do so much speaking and acting.” Harry W, Year 6

“I thought that the costumes were very good. The songs and the sayings were very funny.” Charlie G, Year 6

“I liked that people from the crowd were randomly picked up to play parts. The play said that whoever you are, you can reach your dreams.” Arthur B, Year 6

Sports News As mentioned in last week's Chronicle, we had a very special guest in Friday's assembly. Harlequins player Danny Care surprised everyone (staff included) when he entered the auditorium after the children had seen some of his impressive highlights on the big projector. The 84 England capped International gave his thoughts and overview of the Rugby World Cup including his prediction for the finalists. Danny answered some great questions from the pupils, including “Which sports did you play when you were younger? Danny mentioned that he enjoyed football and athletics as a child, but encouraged the children to play and try as many sports as possible whilst they have the opportunity. It was a real treat to have Danny at our school and we are really grateful for him taking the time from his busy rugby and physio schedule. Football fixtures have taken place across the school against Downsend, Hoe Bridge and KCJS (see SOCS for results), as well as continuing our House Football competition. The U9s played netball against Bishopgate, whilst the U8s trained with Hoe Bridge on Tuesday. Our golf squad were in action both Thursday and Friday at Cranleigh and Whitgift (Croham GC) respectively, plus our members of our squash squad played against CLFS on Friday evening. Saturday morning saw our annual U8 and U10 Football Tournament taking place on the Henderson fields. Once again, the morning was a great success with Cranmore hosting 16 football teams with over 150 people supporting the event. I have received lots of great feedback and praise regarding the morning from the other schools and visiting parents. I would like to say a huge thank you and well done to Mr O'Neill our Head of Football and the rest of the sports staff for preparing and delivering another great event.
